Pop Culture Roundup Sept. 28, 2007

Critics weigh in on "Moonlight," CBS' new vampire-themed drama, which debuts tonight.

New York Daily News: ...Its elements are so shamelessly copied, the whole show should be sponsored by Xerox.

San Jose Mercury News: Bram Stoker, Anne Rice and Joss Whedon be damned. "Moonlight" is a vampire saga determined to play by its own rules.

...This offbeat approach might give you the false impression that you've tuned into a sassy supernatural thriller bursting with creative ingenuity. Unfortunately, "Moonlight" soon loses its playful oomph and unravels into something that is inert, boring and, at times, almost painful to watch

Detroit Free Press: Although it possesses a few interesting quirks -- Mick sleeps in a freezer, and he has a buddy down at the blood bank to supply him with nourishing corpuscles -- "Moonlight" falls somewhere in the middle of the new paranormal pack. It's neither great nor awful.

Orange County Register: Mick St. John is not the first vampire with a conscience, nor the first to serve as a guardian of a particular human. But he may be the first television vampire with a witty streak that doesn't cross over into camp. He's eager to dispel misconceptions.

No sleeping in coffins, no aversion to garlic, and crosses don't faze him, he tells the camera in an arresting opening, a droll interview with a vampire.

O'Loughlin is terrific as Mick, a regular guy who was smitten, then bitten by his bride Coraline (Shannyn Sossamon) 60 years ago.

Jason Dohring, as Mick's eternal friend Josef, is a great draw – again, more for the Fox or CW viewer than CBS. He was riveting on "Veronica Mars," now he's playing a timeless, arrogant, old-fashioned vampire with little patience for Mick's politically correct approach to being undead. In fact, he's a blood-sucking hedge-fund trader.

Pop Culture Roundup Sept. 26, 2007

The New York Times takes a look at the new "Bionic Woman," which debuts tonight.

NBC’s show, which is more about fembot martial arts and slick “Matrix”-ish special effects than about character development, is oriented toward young male viewers.

The Los Angeles Times also weighs in:

Dark in mood and tone -- on a flat screen, the show is barely visible in direct sunlight -- "Bionic Woman" owes much to the popularity of the graphic novel, the noir sci-fi sensibilities of Philip K. Dick and perhaps Angelina Jolie. None of which is a bad thing. This is the post-feminist, post-9/11 bionic woman -- not only doesn't she need any help, she wouldn't trust it if it were offered. But that won't keep her from getting the job done.

In other words, it's not your mother's "Bionic Woman." It's much, much better.

And Canada's Globe and Mail has a feature story on the new show:

Beyond the basic premise, everything else about "The Bionic Woman" has changed. Gone are the slow-motion running and the springy sound effects when Jaime leaps in the air. And no sign anywhere of Oscar Goldman, the smooth scientist who served as mentor and handler to both Jaime and the Six Million Dollar Man.

Actress Sarah Paulson ("Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip" and "Down With Love") will play Ellen Dolan in the upcoming "Spirit" movie.

---------------------

Effort to remake "The Prisoner" starring Colin Eccleson ("Doctor Who") have fallen by the wayside--just like all of the many previous attempts to resurrect the cult series.

Eccleston's involvement was probably no more than the wishful thinking of Sky One executives. He wouldn't have been a bad choice, although having quit Doctor Who for fear of typecasting, he's unlikely to jump straight into The Prisoner. Daniel Craig would be my Number Six, although of course Craig is now Bonded for the foreseeable future. The link between Bond and Number Six has a good pedigree, by the way. McGoohan, who played a similar sort of secret agent character in ITV's Danger Man, twice turned down the role of 007, Bond's bed-hopping ways being anathema to the sexual morals of the fiercely monogamous star.

The reunited Sex Pistols will play three shows in London.

To coincide with the Sex Pistols reunion, music paper NME.COM said it had started a campaign to propel their song "God Save The Queen" to the top of the charts when it is reissued on seven-inch vinyl in October.

It says the single, banned by radio stations in 1977 because it risked offending the monarchy during the Queen's Jubilee year, was unfairly denied the top spot

Doctor Who visits Pompeii in season 4

From the BBC:

The Doctor and his new companion Donna are set to travel back in time to the Roman Empire for the fourth series of "Doctor Who," the BAFTA award-winning drama which will transmit on BBC One in spring 2008.

In one of the most ambitious episodes to date, the Doctor, played by David Tennant, and Donna (Catherine Tate) arrive in Pompeii in AD 79, on the eve of the historic eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

The Time Lord and his companion are posed with an immediate dilemma – should they warn the residents of Pompeii of the forthcoming catastrophe or leave them to fend for themselves?

"The Thick Of It" actor Peter Capaldi guest stars as Caecillius and is joined by "Quadrophenia" and "Rose And Maloney" actor Phil Davis who stars as Lucius. Further guest stars include "Howard's Way" and "Born And Bred" actress Tracey Childs who plays Metella.

The filming of the episode took place at Cinecitta studios in Rome, which the Doctor Who team expertly transformed into Pompeii for a week of filming in September of this year.

Executive Producer and Head Writer, Russell T Davies comments: "Arriving in Pompeii marks the start of another exciting adventure for the Doctor and Donna. Donna is stunned to find herself in the midst of history's most famous volcanic eruption. Viewers can expect many more ambitious storylines and a whole host of guest stars in 2008."

The start of the new series will see Donna tracking down the Time Lord during an alien emergency in modern day London. The couple are destined to experience a series of wonderful adventures throughout the new series including meeting one of Doctor Who's most popular aliens, The Ood in a brand new episode, "Planet Of The Ood."

Donna and the Doctor will also be travelling through time for an encounter with the legendary murder mystery novelist, Agatha Christie.

Award-winning actress, Tate is reprising her role as Donna, the runaway bride who featured in last year's Doctor Who Christmas special. Tate will star alongside David Tennant for the complete 13-week new season run.

Freema Agyeman who played Martha Jones, the Doctor's companion throughout the critically acclaimed third series will return to the show to join the Doctor and Donna mid series.

The fourth series of Doctor Who is now in production and will hit BBC One in spring 2008.

NORTHLANDERS #1
Written by Brian Wood
Art by Davide Gianfelice
Cover by Massimo Carnevale
Variant cover by Adam Kubert
Christian/Islamic conflict. Technological revolution. Fear of the end of the world.
Sound familiar? It should. But it’s not the world of 2007…it’s the world of Europe, circa 1000 AD. The world of Brian Wood’s brand-new monthly series, NORTHLANDERS.
Following the red-hot success of one of last year’s most critically-acclaimed books, DMZ, NORTHLANDERS is a fresh take on Vikings. NORTHLANDERS tells the epic tale of Sven, an exiled Viking prince who’s been living the decadent, high life in Constantinople — the 11th century’s answer to Las Vegas — but now must return to the desolate lands of his birth in the frigid islands of the North Sea to reclaim his vast inheritance. Intending only to take his money and run, he finds more than he bargained for as his former family and friends are enslaved at the hands of Gorm, his ruthless uncle. What follows isnot only a bloody quest to free his people, but also a young man’s struggle to discover where he belongs in a rapidly changing world…and what awful sacrifices it will take to make a Prince into a King.

INCOGNEGRO HARDCOVER
Written by Mat Johnson
Art by Warren Pleece
Cover by Stephen John Philips
Writer Mat Johnson (HELLBLAZER: PAPA MIDNITE), winner of the prestigious Hurston-Wright Legacy Award for fiction, constructs a fearless graphic novel that is both a page-turning mystery and a disturbing exploration of race and self-image in America, masterfully illustrated with rich period detail by Wareen Pleece (THE INVISIBLES, HELLBLAZER).
In the early 20th Century, when lynchings were commonplace throughout the American South, a few courageous reporters from the North risked their lives to expose these atrocities. They were African-American men who, due to their light skin color, could “pass” among the white folks. They called this dangerous assignment going “incognegro.”
Zane Pinchback, a reporter for the New York-based New Holland Herald barely escapes with his life after his latest “incognegro” story goes bad. But when he returns to the sanctuary of Harlem, he’s sent to investigate the arrest of his own brother, charged with the brutal murder of a white woman in Mississippi.
With a lynch mob already swarming, Zane must stay “incognegro” long enough to uncover the truth behind the murder in order to save his brother — and himself. He finds that the answers are buried beneath layers of shifting identities, forbidden passions and secrets that run far deeper than skin color.

PRIDE OF BAGHDAD SC
Written by Brian K. Vaughan
Art and cover by Niko Henrichon
“Engaging.” — Time
“Prescient.” — Playboy, Best of 2006
The startlingly original look at life on the streets of Baghdad during the Iraq War inspired by true events arrives in a stunning new softcover edition. In his award-winning work on Y: THE LAST MAN and EX MACHINA (one of Entertainment Weekly's 2005 Ten Best Fiction titles), writer Brian K. Vaughan has displayed an understanding of both the cost of survival and the political nuances of the modern world. Now, in this provocative graphic novel, Vaughan examines life on the streets of war-torn Iraq. The experience is made all the more evocative by the lush, spectacular artwork of Niko Henrichon.
In the spring of 2003, a pride of lions escaped from the Baghdad Zoo during an American bombing raid. Lost and confused, hungry but finally free, the four lions roamed the decimated streets of Baghdad in a desperate struggle for their lives. In documenting the plight of the lions, PRIDE OF BAGHDAD raises questions about the true meaning of liberation — can it be given, or is it earned only through self-determination and sacrifice? And in the end, is it truly better to die free than to live life in captivity?
