Courtney Love will play rare Nirvana and Hole tracks on BBC 6 when she takes over the station for the day Dec. 11.

Hole's Drown Soda - written and recorded especially for a John Peel session in 1991 - and Nirvana's Been A Son and Something In The Way - recorded for the Radio 1 Evening Sequence in the same year - will be included in the tracks chosen by Courtney Love when she becomes the 6 Music Selector on Monday 11 December 2006.

Selector is an annual 6 Music event which gives artists the opportunity to take over for the day, choosing the music, commissioning sessions and playing rarely heard BBC sessions.

Courtney Love joins Oasis (12 December) and Moby (14 December) who will each take over the digital airwaves for a day next month.

The Los Angeles Times has an obituary for comics artist Dave Cockrum, who passed away last weekend.

Cockrum designed or co-created many signature characters for the popular comic book series, and some of them — such as Storm, Mystique, Nightcrawler and Colossus — went on to become part of Fox's "X-Men" films, which have grossed $607 million at U.S. theaters.

"We did that so well that 25 years later it's still the best-selling comic in the business and has become the basis of an entire financial empire based on toys, cartoons, action figures, video games and, recently, the big-budget film," Cockrum wrote in an undated recollection posted on his website
.

Controversial comics writer/editor/publisher Jim Shooter is reportedly returning to his roots this summer--scripting the "Legion of Superheroes." Shooter made his professional debut on the title back in the 1960s at the tender age of 13.

Hot Wheels will manufacture different-sized TV-style Batmobiles next year.

The legendary crime-fighting vehicle was designed by custom automotive icon, George Barris, and has since become a lasting symbol of the Batman franchise.

This launch of the Batmobile commemorates the 40th anniversary of the “Batman” television series, which initially aired in 1966, and reintroduces one of television’s most recognized vehicles to an entirely new generation of Batman fans and collectors alike. Barris’ classic version of the Batmobile is world-renowned and the Hot Wheels reproductions will be the first of their kind.

Mattel will produce multiple scales of the Hot Wheels Batmobile, including a 1:64th scale model that will appear on store shelves in Spring 2007 in the Hot Wheels basic car line. In Fall 2007, there will be an additional 1:64th scale model introduced as well as a 1:43rd scale replica model and a 1:18th scale, which will have three levels of detail and finish. The ultimate version, the Hot Wheels Elite special edition Batmobile, will have enough detail to delight even the most discriminating of Batmobile collectors.

A traveling museum exhibit dedicated to the works of Muppet Master Jim Henson is planned.

This unique traveling exhibit documents Henson’s process of “visual thinking” through exceptional displays and showcases. The exhibit will include several of Henson's Muppets (from "The Muppet Show", "Sesame Street", "Fraggle Rock", "The Dark Crystal" and others); plus over 100 framed works of art (include paintings, sketches, cartoons, and storyboards), a large collection of rare photographs, unique production documents and additional artifacts and film props. Viewers of the exhibit will also be treated to over 30-minutes of special videos included in the exhibit.

Pop Culture Roundup Nov. 27, 2006

Longtime comics artist and co-creator of such superheroes as the X-Men's Nightcrawler, Dave Cockrum died Nov. 26 from diabetes complications. He was 63.

--------------------------

More sad news in the comics world: Jerry Bails--the man possibly most responsible for creating comics fandom--died Nov. 23 at age 73.

From comics historian Mark Evanier's blog:

In 1961, he published Alter Ego #1, one of the first fanzines to ever put comic buffs in contact with one another.

Those of us who loved super-hero comics in the sixties owe a tremendous debt to Jerry. He was a strong cheerleader for the revivals that constituted what we call "The Silver Age of Comics." Almost all of the checklists and databases that exist today of what's been published and who wrote and drew it began with Jerry's work.

Jerry handed Alter Ego off to his friend Roy Thomas in the early sixties. It ended when Roy went off to become one of the top guys at Marvel Comics...and by then, there were hundreds of similar homemade magazines.

DC Comics has a new line of publications coming out geared toward teenage girls.

In May, DC plans to introduce Minx, a line of graphic novels aimed at young adult female readers, starting with six titles in 2007, each retailing for less than $10. The stories will be far removed from the superheroes who more typically appeal to young males. They include “Clubbing,” about a London party girl who solves a mystery; “Re-Gifters,” about a Korean-American teenager in California who enjoys martial arts; and “Good as Lily,” about a young woman who meets three versions of herself at different ages.

The Sci Fi Channel airs a six-episode "Heroes" marathon Wednesday starting at 6 p.m. ET.

Now here's an odd couple: Ricky (the UK "Office") Gervais and Bob Dylan.

"Bob Dylan has asked Ricky on to his radio show in America. Ricky will pre-record their chat when he visits New York later in the year ready for broadcast early in 2007."

Entertainment Weekly has a report on Joss Whedon's new "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" comic.

Whedon, 42, is running the comic as if it were a TV show; after writing the first four issues (a premise-establishing pilot), he'll oversee other scribes who will write the remaining issues (think: episodes) in what is planned to be 25-to-30-issue saga. ''We're calling it season 8,'' says Whedon, ''and we're picking up almost right after season seven left off. I don't know exactly why it or how it happened. I just thought, 'Oh, I could do that! It would be fun!' It happens to me every now and then, and causes me to commit to things I really don't have time for.''

Michael Caine channels John Lennon.

Audiences will see two-time Oscar winner Michael Caine as they've never seen him before in director Alfonso Cuarón's upcoming SF movie Children of Men: as a futuristic hippie modeled on former Beatle John Lennon, Cuarón told SCI FI Wire. Cuarón said that Caine told him he wanted the character to appear as if Lennon had lived two decades into the future.

"When he made the costume fitting, he said, 'I want to play this like John Lennon,' because he was friends with Lennon," Cuarón said. "And he told me [Lennon] talked a bit nasally. And if you see his performance, he has that nasal kind of way. And so we're doing all these makeup fittings and he ... goes to look at himself in [the] mirror, and he becomes this other character. At that moment his wife walks into the room and goes next to him and says, 'Have you seen my husband?' She didn't recognize him at that moment."

An Apple a Day: More Pop Psych Sounds from the Apple Era 1968-1970
94 Baker St, (RPM 270) , the Pop Psych Sounds from the Apple Era has been one of the RPM catalogue’s strongest sellers in recent years. Thus with the assistance of, the author of the History of the Beatles Apple Organization book, we have constructed a second volume. The Apple Music publishing company was first into battle for the new organisation, making its initial signings in mid 1967, in fact before the company even got to 94 Baker St. Over the next two years they demo’d many writers and placed recordings where possible. Inevitably given the amount recorded much remained unissued and we are happy to be able to give many of those songs a well deserved airing. Highlights includes four more previously unissued Iveys tracks, the first recordings of Gallagher & Lyle, and the cult Bachdenkel who provide the title track. The sleeve notes are a lovingly documented essay by Stefan Granados including many rare pics and memorabilia.

Track list:

1. Apple a Day [#] - U (Don't) No Who
2. Great Idea - Jigsaw
3. Ivy Unrehearsed [#] - Gallagher & Lyle
4. I Am Nearly There - Denis Couldry
5. Black & White Rainbows [#] - The Iveys
6. Girl in a Mini Skirt [#] - The Iveys
7. Soldier [#] - Lace
8. Technicolour Dream [#] - Gallagher & Lyle
9. In Your Wonderful Way [#] - Gallagher & Lyle
10. People Who Are Different [#] - Mortimer
11. Tomorrow Today [#] - The Iveys
12. James in the Basement - Denis Couldry
13. Strange People [#] - U (Don't) No Who
14. Charlotte Rose - Majority One
15. Somebody's Turning on the People - Goldrush
16. Fairytale - Second Hand
17. Sister Saxophone [#] - Turquoise
18. Now and Again Rebecca [#] - U (Don't) No Who
19. Mr. Strangeways [#] - The Iveys
20. Good as Gold - The Cups
21. Woodstock [#] - Turquoise
22. Evil Loving Woman [#] - Peter Cooper

Hip tip: 1970s' Fantastic Four radio show

Think about the golden age of radio drama and the 30s and 40s likely come to mind. But the mid 1970s weren't too shabby, either, if you lived in the right market.

I was lucky. The college radio station in my town--along playing a diverse assortment of great music--played some great radio adventure programs. I've already mentioned the Jack Flanders adventures like "The Fourth Tower of Inverness" and "Moon Over Morocco" here, but they also played "The Fantastic Four" radio show.

Listening now, yeah, the show may sound a little cheesy. But, compared to many TV programs and movies based on comics (even those produced today) it was great. Nice sound effects, decent voice acting and--best of all--scripts that were loyal to the comic. In fact, the scripts were the comic. In most cases, narration and dialogue came straight out of early issues of FF. Even nicer, the narrator for these shows was none other than Stan Lee--the guy who wrote the scripts in the first place.

And, oh yeah, the role of Johnny Storm: The Human Torch was voiced by none other than Bill Murray, future star of movies and "Saturday Night Live" and movies, but then a comic working on the "National Lampoon Radio Hour"--another cool show my college station aired.

The NLRH had a stellar cast, in fact, featuring lots of Second City folks who later went on to do big stuff: John Belushi, Christopher Guest, Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner...

Anyway, if you're a comics fan--particularly if you enjoy early Marvel Age stuff--the FF show is something you're sure to enjoy. If you can get ahold of copies. Sadly, the show is commercially unavailable--although if you Google around you might be able to find CD copies or downloads. It'd be really nice if someone--I don't know who exactly owns the rights--made it available. Maybe Marvel could offer it up on their Web site.

I did see, recently, original broadcast LPs of the program for sale on e-Bay, which sparked this recollection. Here are cover images of those:

Also of interest, is this in-depth interview with the show's producer Peter B. Lewis over at the Fantastic Four Plaza.

London's Indica Gallery, where John Lennon first met Yoko One, has been recreated

The exhibition consists of works by artists such as Ono, some of which were shown at the original gallery and some newer works, as well as a series of specially commissioned pieces by some younger, modern counterparts, all of which relate in some way to each other. "London is at the zeitgeist of the contemporary art scene and we wanted to see how the work from this earlier, more innocent age, related to what is happening now," said Tot Taylor, a director of Riflemaker. "It is about comparing and contrasting the work."
