Pop Culture Roundup April 17, 2007

Observant readers have noticed the "Stan Lee Presents" line has been removed from recent editions of Marvel Essentials reprints books. What's up with that?

You can argue whether Stan really "presented" or had anything to do with the comics where that line appeared. But it appeared, nevertheless. As I understand it, it had something to do with Stan's business arrangement with Marvel. He was credited.

And, lord knows, Stan more than did his part to promote the Marvel brand in the years he ceased being an active writer for the company. In fact, "Stan Lee" and "Marvel" were synonymous during the 60s and 70s.

To mess with reprints this way, for whatever reason, seems wrong. These reprints are for nostalagists and should appear (minus the color, of course) as they did when first published.

Ah geeze... I've been there. Condolences to Fred Hembeck on his basement flood. Glad to hear nothing irreplaceable was lost.

Billy Bragg will team with former Clash members Mick Jones and Topper Headon for Joe Strummer memorial concert to benefit striking firefighters in Britain.

The gig will mark the fifth anniversary of the now legendary show that Joe Strummer performed with his former bandmate Jones at Acton Town Hall in 2002 - just weeks before his death.

The BBC intends to put thousands of its archives online.

The radio and TV material, some of which has never been repeated, includes an interview with Martin Luther King filmed shortly before he was assassinated, and another with John Lennon and Yoko Ono in which the former Beatle talks candidly about the impact their relationship had on the band.

Britain's Radio Times has a great Doctor Who-related cover this week, but it may be too spoily for some folks. Click at your own risk.
