Pop Artifact! Bedazzled movie poster

Pop Culture Roundup July 20, 2007

There's a new video game based on the "Asterix at the Olympic Games" comic book.

-----------------------

Actor Seth Rogan, now appearing in the film "Knocked Up," has signed on to write and star in a new Green Hornet movie.

Rogen is just the newest player in a large and varied cast of characters who have tried to bring Green Hornet to the big screen. A Green Hornet film was previously announced at Universal with Ron Underwood directing. Three years ago Miramax entered a deal with Kevin Smith to adapt and direct a Green Hornet film. Actors as wide ranging as George Clooney, Jake Gyllenhaal and Mark Wahlberg have been rumored to be in talks to play Reid over the years. And at one point or another Jason Scott Lee and Jet Li have been rumored to play Kato.

--------------------------

Director Gavin Hood is set to helm a solo Wolverine film starring Hugh Jackman.

Using several resources that include the Marvel Comics lore, along with the more recent Weapon X graphic novels by Frank Miller, "Wolverine" mixes action with an origin story about how Logan emerged from a barbaric experiment as an indestructible mutant with retractable razor-sharp claws.

CD: Jersey Beat: The Music Of Frankie Valli & The 4 Seasons

Out from Rhino Records, this 4-disk box collects the best of Frankie and the boys. You can order it now for $58.49 from Amazon.

Details:

The most comprehensive 4 Seasons box ever assembled. Three audio CDs feature 76 tracks spanning 1962-1992 (and multiple lineups), including 37 Top 40 hits. An additional DVD contains 40 minutes of rare footage, including TV appearances, interviews, live performances, and more. An 84-page booklet features in-depth liner notes and rare photos.

Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons are once again at the forefront of American pop culture through the phenomenal success of the Broadway smash Jersey Boys, the 2006 Tony Award Winner for Best Musical. The show, now reaching far vaster audiences through a national touring company, poses the question, "How did four blue collar kids become one of the greatest successes in pop music history?" One of the only Stateside groups whose reign of hits was uninterrupted by the British Invasion, the Seasons' seminal early smashes are legendary. They're all here on Jersey Beat, along with all the essential later classics, providing an unprecedented exploration of the masterful Jersey Boys whose unforgettable harmonies took over the world.

CDs: Monkees' Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. and Headquarters special editions

These latest editions in Rhino's latest Monkees reissue campaign are available now. If you order 'em from Rhino, you get a bonus 7-inch vinyl Monkees single.

Details:

Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd.

Rhino celebrates the 40th anniversary of PISCES, AQUARIUS, CAPRICORN & JONES LTD. with a deluxe two-disc set that contains the stereo and mono mixes of the original album along with rare and unreleased bonus tracks from the album's sessions.

Just before Thanksgiving 1967, The Monkees returned with their fourth consecutive #1 album, PISCES, AQUARIUS, CAPRICORN & JONES LTD. Generally considered as one of the band's finest, the album's 13 tracks include the hit songs “Pleasant Valley Sunday” written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King and “Words,” by the songwriting team of Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, who wrote many of the band's biggest hits. As one of the first major acts to cover a Harry Nilsson song, The Monkees helped expose the talented songwriter to a much wider audience with their version of “Cuddly Toy.” The set's 14 bonus tracks feature unreleased alternate mixes of “Star Collector,” “Salesman,” “Cuddly Toy” and “Daily Nightly,” a song Nesmith wrote about the '66 riots on the Sunset Strip. The bonus tracks also include the soulful “Goin' Down,” a track that came together during a jam session and was based on the chord progression of Mose Allison's “Parchment Farm.”

Also included are unpublished photos and interviews with the Monkees along with in-depth liner notes penned by Andrew Sandoval, the author of The Monkees: The Day-By-Day Story Of The '60s TV Pop Sensation.

Headquarters

Rhino celebrates the 40th anniversary of the release of HEADQUARTERS with a deluxe two-disc set that contains the stereo and mono mixes of the original album along with rare and unreleased bonus tracks from the album's sessions.

The Monkees' third album, HEADQUARTERS, was also the group's third #1 record. Released in 1967 just as the Summer of Love was flowering, the album represents a watershed moment for the quartet. After a bitter fight for more creative control, the band members were finally allowed to pick the songs they sang and play on the songs they recorded. Working with producer Chip Douglas, the band tracked 13 songs for the album including the Nesmith-penned single “The Girl I Knew Somewhere” (which was not originally included on the album), “Shades Of Gray,” “You Just May Be The One,” “Randy Scouse Git” and “For Pete's Sake,” a track later used as the closing theme to the band's Emmy-winning television show. Among the set's 21 bonus songs are several unreleased stereo remixes including “You Can't Tie A Mustang Down,” “If I Learn To Play The Violin” and “A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You,” the #2 hit single written by Neil Diamond, plus demo versions of “Nine Times Blue,” “Midnight Train” and “Pillow Time.”

Also included are unpublished photos and interviews with the Monkees along with in-depth liner notes penned by Andrew Sandoval, the author of The Monkees: The Day-By-Day Story Of The '60s TV Pop Sensation.

Don't hold your breath for a Byrds reunion.

"I have no problem with the Byrds," Roger McGuinn says. "I see it as a great memory, and why mess it up by going out and doing it now just for money, because it would just be a cash grab."

Some folks are angry at The New York Times for jumping the gun on reviewing the final Harry Potter book (you may've heard it's coming out Saturday...).

Bloomsbury, which publishes Harry Potter in Britain, and Scholastic, its U.S. publisher, spent millions of dollars trying to protect the contents of the novel until its official publication.

But copies of "Deathly Hallows", believed to include both fake and real versions, have surfaced on the Internet and this week some books were shipped to customers by a U.S. online retailer, prompting Scholastic to take legal action.

The seventh and final Harry Potter instalment is expected to become the world's fastest selling book after months of hype and speculation about its contents, including what happens to the boy wizard and his friends at Hogwarts.

The New York Times review said its copy was purchased from a New York City store on Wednesday.

Pop Culture Roundup July 18, 2007

Papercutz is reviving the Classics Illustrated comic book line this November.

The more expansive graphic novel format allows the classic stories to be presented more completely, something that is quite evident in Michel Plessix's 144-page adaptation of Kenneth Grahame's classic The Wind in the Willows. Plessix renders the adventures of Mr. Toad with subtle tones of aquarelle laid over thin, precise line work. Papercutz' The Wind in the Willows is available in both hardcover ($17.95) and trade paperback editions ($13.95).

The BBC offers a Harry Potter primer for those who want to catch up before the series' last book arrives in stores this week.

James Marsters is enthusiastic about his upcoming guest spot on "Doctor Who" spinoff "Torchwood."

The actor, who starred as a goth vampire in both the cult US series Buffy and its spin-off Angel, said he was "really excited" about his character.

"I can't say too much about him, except he is naughty and a bit of a psychopath," he said.

The new guest stars will join John Barrowman and Eve Myles

"I am a huge fan of Doctor Who and Torchwood so it was me who knocked on their door."

"Doctor Who" producer Russell T. Davies may be leaving the series after the fourth season. But that doesn't mean the show won't go on.

"I know that there's tremendous anxiety among Doctor Who fans about the future of Doctor Who," one of the show's writers Steven Moffat said. "Here's an answer that people should listen to. No broadcaster lets go of a show like Doctor Who. They'd have to be out of their f--king minds."

The "Tintin in the Congo" controversy continues, with U.S. Borders stores now refusing to stock the title in its childrens section.

"Borders is committed to carrying a wide range of materials and supporting our customers' right to choose what to read and what to buy," Borders said.

"That said, we also are committed to acting responsibly as a retailer and with sensitivity to all of the communities we serve."

The book's publishers, Egmont, said the book comes with a warning that it features "bourgeois, paternalistic stereotypes of the period - an interpretation some readers may find offensive".

The Tintin adventures were written by Herge - real name Georges Prosper Remi - from 1929 until his death in 1983.

He continued to revise his books after their publication, and admitted embarrassment over some of the views they expressed.

BBC radio has an audio documentary about author Kingsley Amis and his fascination with James Bond. It's narrated by Amis' son, author Martin Amis. Listen.
