1960s Marvel Comics paperback collections

Dial B Blog's homage to the 1967 Lancer Books "Hulk Collector's Edition" made me think of the other proto-Essential Marvel paperbacks that came out back then. I've rounded up the covers to each and have posted them here.

Also, if you click the links below them, you can order your own copy via one of Amazon's used book dealers. A quick check indicates you can get a copy for an average of $4--more if you want one in great condition.

A Superman theme park is such an awesome idea. Yesterday, Comic Coverage spotlighted a 1955 Superman tale that featured just such a facility. And today he expands with Neal Adams' 1970s concept drawings for an "Amazing World of Superman" theme park. I remember this appearing in a Superman annual or tab at one point and poring over it forever. See it big via the link above.

Evidently Captain America didn't make the cut in the "Incredible Hulk" film. After mentioning Cap has a cameo in the new flick, we've since learned the scene has been cut. Here's info from a Hollywood SOS interview with the movie's director Louis Leterrier:

“There’s a point when Bruce Banner gives up on his quest for the cure and decide to kill himself. So he travels far North and reaches the Arctic Circle. You might have seen bits of it in some of the promos. The result was a very dark and strong scene, which Marvel, me and everyone else’s considered to be too hard to young audiences to take, so we’ve cut it. Having that said, when Bruce arrives at his destination he meets up with Captain America! At some point this week, we will make it available on the internet – but I cannot tell you where or when – and the material will definitely be on the DVD.”

Britain unveils Hammer Horror stamps

Britain's Royal Mail has launched a series of stamps celebrating Hammer Horror films:

Batmobile designer Barris designs guitar!

Oh man. I'm a guitar player and a Batman fanatic so I need this!!! Bad!!!



What you see above is a genuine electric Bat guitar designed by George Barris, who designed the classic 1966 TV Batmobile! Not only that, But Barris has also designed a few other guitars based on some of his other car creations, including the Munsters' Drag-U-La (seen below) and upcoming guitars based on the Munsters' Koach and the Fireball 500 (featured in the 1960s Frankie Avalon-Annette Funicello movie of the same name).

The guitars, which are manufactured by the Hallmark Guitar company, are based on Hallmark's "swept-wing" style of the 1960s.



The bad news, for me, is that only 100 of each of these guitars will be produced, so they'll obviously be super spendy.

Early Incredible Hulk review

Variety weighs in:

What seemed in theory the least necessary revival of a bigscreen superhero emerges as perfectly solid summer action fare in "The Incredible Hulk." Revisiting the character put under a psychological microscope in 2003 to mixed results by Ang Lee and James Schamus, Marvel, Universal and several of the same producers have repackaged one of their better known stable stars in a straightforward actioner that delivers the goods with no unnecessary frills or digressions. Happy to give the intended audience what it wants, this loud and quick-moving production will shake loose ample coin in all markets.


...It's not especially exciting or surprising, lacking the cheek and sheen of "Iron Man" and the opulence and star power of the "Spider-Man" and "X-Men" series. But it's better than the "Fantastic Four" pictures and "Daredevil" and manages to shift the title character from a hopelessly conflicted Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to a wannabe good guy.

Let's take a trip to Superman Land!

The BBC will post clips of every TV and radio program it's ever made online, reports This is London. That's a lot of clips!

The venture will see a web page created for every episode of every programme screened on BBC radio and TV, and will form the basis of a future plan to create a massive searchable archive.

The pages will initially contain only information, clips and links, but the corporation hopes eventually to make whole programmes available.

BBC and EMI strike deal to put out unreleased music by Beach Boys, McCartney, Pink Floyd and more

Thousands of hours of radio and TV performances by EMI recording artists lingering in the BBC vaults may start slowly creeping out thanks to a new deal between the label and broadcaster, NME reports.

The recordings include live radio sessions from Pink Floyd - including songs from their 1967 debut album 'Piper At The Gates Of Dawn', when Syd Barrett, was still in the band and a stripped-down version of Coldplay's 2000 hit 'Shiver'.

The deal will mean EMI can include these BBC recordings from their artists on DVDs, CDs and digital downloads, and will build on recordings from artists already released by the BBC, including Queen and Roxy Music.
