The economic downturn is hard on everyone, it seems.

-----

"X-Files" star Gillian Anderson may make a guest appearance on "Doctor Who."

Sources say programme chiefs want the London-based X-Files star to appear opposite the new DoctorMatt Smith in a one-off adventure next year. It’s understood the American actress could play renegade Time Lady The Rani, a glamorous but evil scientific genius previously played in the series by Kate O’Mara in the Eighties.

“Gillian obviously has a massive sci-fi following and it’s felt it would be a major coup to have her appear in Doctor Who,” says a show insider. “The team behind the show are keen for the next Doctor to have lots of new enemies and Gillian would be a glamorous and impressive addition to the list. The Rani would be a perfect role for her as the character used to be regarded as one of the Doctor’s most deadly opponents.”

Paul McCartney may have earned the Coachella Festival a hefty fine because his set was 54 minutes too long.

Under laws put in place by the area's local authority, promoters Goldenvoice are liable for a £1,000 fine for every minute of music played after midnight.

The exact penalty is expected to be announced in a few weeks.

The archives of music trade mag Billboard are now searchable via Google Books. Doesn't look like every year is available, but lots of fun, nostalgic is to be had.

John Lennon Toronto '69 coming to DVD

Shout! Factory has announced the DVD release of "John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band: Live in Toronto 1969 on June 23.

Filmed on the eve of the release of Abbey Road, this concert features Lennon paying homage to a couple of his heroes with covers of “Blue Suede Shoes,” and “Dizzy Miss Lizzy,” playing some Beatles (“Yer Blues” and “Money”) and the now-classic “Give Peace A Chance.” Also included on the disc is an interview with Yoko Ono from 1988.

Preview: Darwyn Cooke's "Parker: The Hunter"

IDW Publishing has just released preview pages from cartoonist Darwyn Cooke's adaptation of "The Hunter," by Richard Stark and they are fabulous.

This the first in a series Cooke plans to do of Stark's "Parker" mystery novels.

Releases of note this week. Click the links to order discounted titles from Amazon.

BATMAN THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #4 This title is getting to be pretty fun. I loved the Batman/Green Arrow team-up in the last ish. Good action, art and some funny moments to boot. This one features Aquaman AND giant dinosaurs!

DC CLASSICS LIBRARY BATMAN: THE ANNUALS Great stuff from the Silver Age. I gotta get it. Evidently the reproduction is quite good--better than the much-griped-about "Superman: Kryptonite Nevermore" volume.

DETECTIVE COMICS #853 The second and final part of Gaimin/Kubert's "Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader."

SHOWCASE PRESENTS LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES Another slab of Silver Age fun.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #592 I continue to love the current Spidey books. It's superhero comics done right. Ugly cover, though.

X-MEN OMNIBUS VOL. 1 The earliest X-Men issues from the 60s in one humongous book. Get it for nearly $40 cheaper on Amazon.

GOLDEN AGE SHEENA QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE VOL. 2 More affordable vintage Sheena.

The BBC reports on The Specials reunion tour. Man, I loved that band...

Any anxiety about whether the band were up to it was swiftly pushed to one side with the set opener, Do The Dog, which got the punks, mods, rockers and skinheads off their heels and onto the balls of their feet, where they stayed for the next 90 minutes.

Here they are on British TV from earlier in the month:

Variety reviews the new Star Trek film:

...the new and improved "Star Trek" will transport fans to sci-fi nirvana. Faithful enough to the spirit and key particulars of Gene Roddenberry's original conception to keep its torchbearers happy but, more crucially, exciting on its own terms in a way that makes familiarity with the franchise irrelevant

In 1953 horror comics were king and Atlas editor-in-chief, Stan Lee, launched a new title to make a bid for the throne—and that title was MENACE! Backed by the best of the best in his art stable—Bill Everett, Russ Heath, Joe Maneely, Gene Colan, John Romita, Joe Sinnott, George Tuska—Stan’s new title became a high-water mark for pre-Code horror. Chock full of page after page of werewolves, vampires, zombies, ghosts, ghouls, double-dealing women and stone-cold killers with a sense of morality as dark as the ink on the page, MENACE lived up to its name—and how! It also showed hints of the Mighty Marvel future to come with running editorial commentary by Stan, reader contests, and characters like the infamous Zombie by Stan and Bill Everett, who would become the Marvel Age’s own killer zombie, Simon Garth. MENACE is a must-have for all aficionados of comics’ rollicking pre-Code days and the perfect entry point for readers looking to take their first adventure into the Atlas Era! Collecting MENACE #1-11

Written by JACK KIRBY, STAN LEE, ROY THOMAS, GERRY CONWAY & ARCHIE GOODWIN
Penciled by JACK KIRBY, NEAL ADAMS, MIKE SEKOWSKY & GENE COLAN
Cover by NEAL ADAMS
The uncanny Inhumans come to the MARVEL MASTERWORKS at last! In 1965, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby gave a strange family of outcasts their debut in the pages of Fantastic Four. Responding to their Shakespearean pathos and Kirby's out of this world character designs, the fans loved them—and wanted more! The mysterious origins of Black Bolt, Medusa, Gorgon, Triton, Karnak and the rest of their wondrous, secret world was initially revealed in a series of Thor features. But that only whetted reader's appetites—and so came their first headlining series in AMAZING ADVENTURES! Launched by writer/artist Jack Kirby, the new series took the Inhumans to their roots, defending their kingdom against the aggressions of mankind—especially against the ultimate threat of the Mandarin. Then a team with uncanny credentials, Roy Thomas and Neal Adams, took up the crown and sent the Inhumans on a mythical exodus into the world of man. It was a saga exploring the social issues of the era and, of course, topped of with a heavy dose of Inhuman action! Also featuring a rare Medusa and Black Bolt tale from MARVEL SUPER-HEROES and a trio of satirical tales from NOT BRAND ECHH by Stan, Jack and their blushing Bullpen! The Children of the Atom are back in their classic adventures from the Silver Age! Launched by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the X-Men blended super-hero action, teen angst, and a metaphor for the turbulent social and racial issues of the ’60s into one potent package! After laying the foundation for what would become comics’ biggest franchise, Stan and Jack passed the headmaster’s role of the Xavier School to Roy Thomas and Werner Roth, who would come into their own while crafting the tales of Marvel’s merry mutants. Collected in this second amazing MASTERWORKS volume, you’ll find the first appearance of the unstoppable Juggernaut, the cosmic Stranger, the mutant Mimic, and in a classic three-part saga, the mutant-hunting robot Sentinels.
