Massive DC Comics history book in the works

From DC's the Source:

DC Comics has joined forces with TASCHEN, the book publisher known for its eye for quality, modern design aesthetic and high-end art books spotlighting every aspect of culture: from art and movies to lifestyle and comics, to produce an ultra-comprehensive, extra large book so impressive, even super heroes may have trouble lifting it.

Clocking in at nearly 15 pounds and with over 650 pages (all details are still to be confirmed), 75 Years of DC Comics: The Art of Modern Mythmaking features more than 1,500 images — including covers, interiors, original illustrations, photos, film stills and collectibles — using the latest digital reproduction technology to bring you the characters, stories and the creators that brought them to life as they’ve never been seen before.

And the man behind the story, telling the tales? None other than Paul Levitz, former DC Comics Publisher and upcoming LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES and ADVENTURE COMICS writer. Paul’s in-depth essays trace the history of DC Comics, from its pulpy beginnings to the modern era.

The book also features massive fold-out timelines and an in-depth appendix that includes bios on artists, writers, editors, publishers and actors.

Live Doctor Who stage show in the works

From the Guardian:

The Doctor – plus assorted adversaries and creatures including Daleks, Cybermen and Oods – is to tour the UK this autumn with Doctor Who Live.

The new Doctor, Matt Smith, and assistant Karen Gillan, will not appear in the stage show, which is being developed by Doctor Who's head writer Steven Moffat and will feature in "on-stage battles, pyrotechnics and special effects".

The show, produced by the BBC's commercial arm, BBC Worldwide, will open in wartime London and conclude with "an epic onstage battle". There will also be a live soundtrack, performed by a 16-piece orchestra, by Doctor Who composer Murray Gold, responsible for the programme's controversial new theme tune.

Bio pic of Mad Magazine publisher William M. Gaines in the works

From Deadline Hollywood:
John Landis, who’s in Cannes to promote Ealing Studios’ comedy Burke and Hare, tells me he’s lining up the financing for a movie about EC Comics publisher and co-creator Bill Gaines, who was driven out of the comic book business by 1950s morality policers after his unapologetic testimony before a U.S. Senate subcommittee investigating juvenile delinquency. Gaines retaliated by converting one of his titles Mad into a satirical magazine which specialized in skewering all aspects of uptight society. Joel Eisenberg has written the screenplay Ghoulishly Yours, William M Gaines.

Doctor Who promo for episode 5.8 The Hungry Earth

Pictures: Space 1999

Haven't seen the show since it aired. Does it hold up? I still have a Dinky toy of one of the spaceships someplace.

Pictures: Myrna Loy

One of my favorite actresses and a fellow Montana native. Love those Thin Man movies, especially.

Still remembering Frank Frazetta

We lost a giant in the illustration/comics world this week and lots of folks have been posting tributes. Comics Catacombs has four posts (click here, here, here and here) featuring Frazetta's "Thund'da King of the Congo" comics stories. Dumb name, great art.

Someone should really publish Frazetta's comic book work in collections. DC has some great Shining Knight stuff in the vaults.
