New comics collected editions out this week: Black Canary; Conan; Black Panther

Click the links to order from Amazon.

Introduced in 1947 as a supporting character in the Johnny Thunder backup stories in Flash Comics, Black Canary became an instant hit with readers. After stealing Johnny Thunder’s thunder (so to speak), she earned her own starring feature that established her identity as Dinah Drake, a meek florist by day who dished out vigilante justice by night under the guise of the Black Canary.
Black Canary often found herself tangled in the cases of Larry Lance, a down-on-his-luck private eye who operated his detective agency out of Dinah’s flower shop. Whenever Larry found himself in way over his head, it was up to Black Canary’s fighting skills and knack for crime solving to save the day, which broke convention from the typical damsel-in-distress archetype of the era.
The Black Canary: Bird of Prey collects all of Dinah Drake’s early comic book appearances from Flash Comics plus other adventures written and illustrated by comic book legends such as Robert Kanigher, Gardner Fox Carmine Infantino, and Murphy Anderson. This edition features stories from Flash Comics #86-88, 90-104; Comic Cavalcade #25; DC Special #3; Adventure Comics #399, 418-419; and The Brave and the Bold #61-62.

Then, on the shores of Bal-Sagoth, Conan meets a new comrade in arms, the mighty Fafnir. Together Conan and Fafnir sail the Vilayet Sea and join the mercenary forces of the War of the Tarim, a holy conflict between Makkalet and Turan! It's a saga of adventure, intrigue and loss that shows the true face of war! And don't miss the full-color adaptation of Robert E. Howard's Conan classic, "The Frost Giant's Daughter" - and the first appearance of Thomas and Windsor-Smith's Red Sonja!

Plus: The Panther prowls in a quintet of rarely seen tales!

New edition of Jack Kirby's "Captain America's Bicentennial Battles" coming from Marvel Comics

Sadly, I didn't nab an original of this one as a kid, although I bought many of Marvel and DC's big tabloid comics. I do have Kirby's masterful "2001" treasury edition, which may never be reprinted due to copyright considerations. Anyway, I've only read this one via scans online and look forward to adding this new edition to my bookshelf. Or floor. I don't have room on my bookshelves. I have piles of books all over my office floor... Oh well, you can pre-order this puppy from Amazon now.

Details from Marvel:

The Marvel Treasury Edition that celebrated 200 years of the United States of America is back, as big as life and better than ever! From the unparalleled imagination of Jack Kirby, it’s a time-spanning adventure featuring Captain America on an incredible journey through his nation’s past — from the American Revolution through two World Wars…and more! Steve Rogers meets major historical figures, makes quite an impact on Benjamin Franklin — and takes inspiration from two centuries of American struggle and progress! Reprinted in all its oversized glory along with suitably patriotic special features, this is one of the Sentinel of Liberty’s wildest adventures of all, without which no Cap collection is complete!

COLLECTING: Marvel Treasury Special: Captain America’s Bicentennial Battles (1976) 1, Mighty Marvel Bicentennial Calendar 1976

Everyone knows Superman's major weakness: Kryptonite. But what happens when that's taken off the board, as a scientific experiment turns all the kryptonite on Earth to iron? Originally published in 1971, this story turned the Man of Steel's status quo on its head. When all Kryptonite has been destroyed, the Man of Steel is anything but invulnerable as his powers slowly begin to fade and a doppelganger Superman arrives on the scene with strange powers of its own--and any contact between the two might result in the destruction of the planet!

Then, Marv Wolfman and Jim Starlin take the reins, pitting the good Doctor against Xander the Merciless and Clea gone mad! It's a descent into the bizarre Quadriverse that ends with a reckoning, as Strange confronts his status as Sorcerer Supreme! All this, plus a beautifully illustrated Annual by co-writer/artist P. The 80s, in my opinion, were bad for music, fashion and politics. But it was a great time to be reading comics, with lots of writers and artists at the Big Two mainstream publishing taking risks and trying new things with characters new and old.

This eclectic collection includes examples from DC Comics from that time. It's out May 25 and available for pre-order from Amazon now.

Jack Kirby's complete war and romance stories for Marvel collected in upcoming omnibus book

Before he got busy co-creating the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men and more for Marvel, Jack Kirby worked in multiple other genres of comics, including suspense, monster tales, war and romance.

Batman's "Brave and the Bold" adventures continue in third omnibus collection

Brave and the Bold
was a favorite Bronze Age title for me. Great art by Jim Aparo, often crazy scripts by Bob Haney. Some of the best Bat tales told.

This behemoth is out Sept. 7 and available for advance order now from Amazon.

In these stories from the early 1980s, Batman fought evil side by side with DC Comics' greatest--and, occasionally, strangest--superheroes, including these tales guest-starring such legendary characters as Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, Black Lightning, Superboy, Swamp Thing and more.

Collects THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #157-200.

Upcoming book collects history of Marvel Comics' "Value Stamps"

I could never bear to cut-up my comic books, so maybe this is one for me.

Out Oct. 5 and available for order from Amazon now.

Details:

In 1974, Marvel Comics publisher Stan Lee devised an ingenious promotional campaign—Marvel Value Stamps, which appeared on the letters pages of their monthly comics. Readers could cut out all 100 of these super hero and super villain stamps and place them in a special mail-order booklet. Once complete, these stamp books could then be redeemed for special discounts and exclusive merchandise. The program was so successful, a second set was released in 1975. And now, for the first time, these original stamp books, stamps, and all of the surrounding ephemera and source material are collected into one must-have volume for collectors and fans, along with text from Marvel Comics historian Roy Thomas.
