Pop Culture Diary: This Week's Review, Reads and Roundups: 'Alice and Steve,' 'Power Ballad,More

What I've Been Into...

"Alice and Steve" Streaming on Disney+, and not at all for kids, this one about an older guy (Steve) who falls in love with the 20-something daughter of his best friend (Alice), who he also once dated.

What starts off as a slightly cringey sit-com, however, quickly turns into something that might've been inspired by "The Beef," with Alice, the angry mom, taking harsh and imaginative revenge on Steve, essentially blowing up his life in one fell swoop. He ends up not only losing most of his clients (he's a hairdresser) but also his dog.

The reliably hilarious Jemaine Clement ("Flight of the Conchords") is in great form as the stumbling, clueless Steve, while and always remarkable Nicola Walker ("Unforgotten," "The Split") is excellently unhinged as Alice.

"Power Ballad" No great shakes here, but it's a sturdy comedy anchored by Paul Rudd and a surprisingly capable Nick Jonas.

Rudd plays Rick Power, an American ex-pat living in Ireland with his wife and daughter and earning his keep fronting a wedding band. He's also a frustrated songwriter, it turns out, and at one fancy wedding crosses paths with Danny Wilson (Jonas) a former boy band member striking out on their own.

The duo drink and smoke a lot and end up collaborating on some songs, one of which, without Rick being credited (or paid), becomes a dhuge hit for Danny.

There's a lot of humor mixed with some light thought-provokingness about the creative process as Rick copes with his anger and jealousy and Danny struggles with his guilt, with the two ultimately, and somewhat violently, crossing paths. In theaters.
