DVD: McHale's Navy season 1

Out March 20, this five-disk set from Shout Factory collects the entire first season of the Ernest Borgnine-Tim Conway ship-com.

Here are full details:

The six-time Emmy-nominated* Mchale's Navy launches on DVD for the very first time as Shout! Factory releases the classic sitcom from television's golden age as a five-disc, restored and re-mastered collector's set on March 20, 2007. To create a sea-worthy box set of the beloved series, DVD producers reunited the unsinkable crew of the P.T. 73, including Oscar-winner Ernest Borgnine** (Marty, The Dirty Dozen) and four-time Emmy-winner Tim Conway*** ("The Carol Burnett Show"), along with fellow crew members Carl Ballantine, Edson Stroll and Bob Hastings, for a first-ever cast reunion in December 2006 with footage from the event included as an exclusive DVD featurette.

Originally aired in 1962 on the ABC network and part of the Universal Television catalog, the outstanding first season of Mchale's Navy boasted writing from the likes of Joseph Heller (Catch 22) and garnered three Emmy nominations, including "Best Comedy" and acting nods for the leads, Borgnine and Conway. Now the original 36 episodes of this award-nominated maiden voyage can be relived on DVD for the suggested list price of $44.98.

By arrangement with the U.S. Navy's international distributor, EURPAC, Shout! Factory has also created a specially-packaged edition of Mchale's Navy exclusively for Naval bases worldwide.

From 1962 to 1966, Mchale's Navy was ABC's must-see comedy series with an amazing cast including Academy Award® winner Ernest Borgnine (Lt. Cmndr McHale), comic genius Tim Conway (Ensign Parker), and the one-of-a-kind comic talent of Joe Flynn (Captain Binghamton). Veteran seaman Quinton McHale is commissioned into the Navy Reserve at the start of WWII. He becomes Skipper of the Torpedo Patrol (PT) Boat #73 stationed on the island of Taratupa in the Pacific. With a lovable crew of six good-hearted swabbies, McHale and his men are constant irritants to their base commander, Captain Wallace B. Binghamton. Binghamton is forever trying to find a way to get rid of McHale and his rule-bending crew and McHale & Co. are forever scheming to keep him from succeeding. Despite their hilarious party-boy shenanigans and utter disregard for Navy regulations, when duty calls the crew of PT 73 does its jobŠand does it well. With its talented stars, great writing and a solid supporting cast, including Gavin McLeod of "Love Boat" fame, Mchale's Navy is classic television at its finest - and funniest.

Guest stars include Oscar winner George Kennedy (Cool Hand Luke), Ted Knight ("Mary Tyler Moore"), Bob Hastings ("All In The Family," "Ironside") and Oscar-nominated Asian-American actor Mako (The Sand Pebbles, Pearl Harbor).

Pop Culture Roundup Jan. 11, 2007

"Munsters" star Yvonne De Carlo passed away yesterday at 84, The Associated Press reports.

De Carlo, whose shapely figure helped launch her career in B-movie desert adventures and Westerns, rose to more important roles in the 1950s. Later, she had a key role in a landmark Broadway musical, Stephen Sondheim's "Follies."

But for TV viewers, she will always be known as Lily Munster in the 1964-1966 slapstick horror-movie spoof "The Munsters." The series (the name allegedly derived from "fun-monsters") offered a gallery of Universal Pictures grotesques, including Dracula and Frankenstein's monster, in a cobwebbed gothic setting.

Another interesting note:

George Barris, who created the ghoulish "Munsters" car, equipped De Carlo's Jaguar with spider web hubcaps, a gargoyle hood ornament and a glossy black sunroof.

"She was a wonderful lady and a car buff. She loved the show so much that she incorporated it into her life, her own car," Barris said Wednesday.

Jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald will be honored with a U.S. postage stamp available today.

Ella Fitzgerald will be immortalized near the end of January as the 30th honoree in the Postal Service's Black Heritage series. Fitzgerald (1917-1996) was widely known as "The First Lady of Song." Her extraordinary vocal range and flexibility, combined with her gift for pitch, rhythmic sense and flawless diction, made her one of America's most distinctive singers of jazz and popular tunes. The Ella Fitzgerald stamp image is a portrait based on a photograph taken around 1956 that captures the joy and excitement that Fitzgerald brought to music.

Shatner, who originated the role of Kirk in the original Trek series and several subsequent films, said in an interview that he was invited to meet with Abrams (Mission: Impossible III), who is also co-writing the movie.

George Harrison's handwritten lyrics for "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" are up for auction.

[They] are expected to fetch up to 400,000 pounds ($780,000).

The manuscript, penned by George Harrison, includes lines not included in the final version of the song, which was first recorded in 1968.

The bottom of the page also features the words: "The band leader said he ain't playin' no more," which auctioneer Cooper Auctions said was a reference to the tense atmosphere in the Beatles' studio at the time.

-----------------------

And here we thought that collaboration between Stan Lee and Ringo Starr reported last year would never surface. From Ringo's Web site:

The third installment in the "Stan Lee Presents" presents series is Ringo, a musical comedy that tells the life story of ex-Beatle Ringo Starr, voicing himself, as if he were a superhero.

"We're very excited," states Lee. "The DVDs should appeal to the same audience as those who enjoy Marvel comics." The first DVD in the series, "Mosaic", will come to DVD Jan. 9 followed by "The Condor", due March 20.

----------------------------

Speaking of the Beatles, could Apple Corps. and Apple Inc. have a collaboration in the works? Sure, the Beatles have sued the computer manufacturer a couple of times over use of the Apple name and especially weren't happy when Stephen Jobs and co. went into the music biz using the Apple with iTunes. But rumors are afoot that the Beatles want to present their music in download form and that the band's catalogue has been remastered.

And, now this, from an article about Jobs introducing the new iPhone yesterday:

Jobs demonstrated the iPhone’s music capabilities by playing “Lovely Rita, Meter Maid,” from the Beatles’ “Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band,” as the album’s psychedelic album art graced a wide-screen monitor.

Update: Maybe, maybe not.

After the show, Apple senior vice president of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller refused to answer questions about why Jobs would demo a song not available on iTunes.

"We don’t have anything to say about that," he said.

Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president for iTunes, was equally opaque.

"Anyone can rip their own CD," Cue said. "Steve’s a huge Beatles fan - huge. He rips and burns."

-----------------------

Out March 27, a box set compiling the complete "Brady Bunch" series will be bedecked in green shag carpeting.

-----------------------

Upcoming on the History Channel:

"Star Trek: Beyond the Final Frontier," hosted by Leonard Nimoy, includes interviews with a number of principals of the five separate TV series and the 10 theatrical movies, who'll discuss the impact of the phenomenon, climaxing in an official auction of "Trek" memorabilia at Christies in New York last October. Air date is Feb. 19.

Pedal steel guitarist "Sneaky" Pete Kleinow of the Flying Burrito Brothers has died from Alzheimer's disease complications at age 72, Reuters reports.

Kleinow soon quit for lucrative session work on albums by the likes of John Lennon ("Mind Games"), Fleetwood Mac ("Heroes are Hard to Find") and Joni Mitchell ("Blue").

He later returned to his original calling as a visual effects artist in film and television. Before the Burritos, he had worked on NBC's "The Gumby Show." His later credits included the first two "Terminator" films, and he shared an Emmy for his work on the TV miniseries "The Winds of War."

A new book, "Hitchcock's Music," looks at the prominent role sound played in the director's flicks. The New York Times takes a look:

For Hitchcock music was not merely an accompaniment. It was a focus. And it didn’t just reveal something about the characters who sang the score’s songs or moved under its canopy of sound; music could seem to be a character itself.

This might sound a bit grandiose, but take a look at Jack Sullivan’s fascinating new book, “Hitchcock’s Music” (Yale University Press). In his book “New World Symphonies,” Mr. Sullivan, who is director of American studies at Rider University in New Jersey, inverted the usual suggestion that American concert-hall music evolved under the domineering shadow of European influence. He showed instead how American music powerfully shaped the evolution of Europe’s art form. Now he shows that it isn’t just that Hitchcock believed that sound should serve image; he believed that image should serve sound.

"Doctor Who" can make boring science fun, says the UK's new science minister.

"If you start a lesson with the chemical formulae you will lose 90 per cent of the class. If you start with something interesting or important, like something they read in the paper or saw on television, they will remain interested.

"It can be part of an entrée to some of the more technical, important but slightly more boring parts of the subject. If I was a teacher I would start with a chunk from Doctor Who and Billie Piper and say, 'Actually, what was that all about and how is our textbook relevant to that?'"

...However, Derek Bell, the chief executive of the Association of Science Education, said: "We all enjoy programmes such as Doctor Who, but teachers would need to be careful to make it clear which bits are science and which fantasy."

I agree with Alter Ego publisher Roy Thomas that DC Comics should publish a book collecting the entire storyline, a move that especially would make sense with cartoonist Jeff (Bone) Smith's new "Monster Society of Evil" mini-series set to debut soon.

Great stuff. New character insights. Hilarious nods to continuity. Expert pacing, and an unhurried reveal of characters: only three of the principles, including Buffy, in those first twenty-two pages.
