Coming Soon: "1966 - The Year the Decade Exploded"

Out Nov. 6, this is a two-CD set compiled by John Savage, author of the forthcoming book of the same title.

Details from the author:

Pop was everything in 1966. It was a way of looking at the world, all funnelled into the single: ideas, attitudes, lyrics and experimentation that in the more indulgent years to come would be stretched out into a whole album. Condensed within the 7-inch format, the possibilities of 1966 were expressed with an extraordinary electricity and intensity – whether it be the flourishing of Holland-Dozier-Holland at Motown, the breakthrough of black American dance culture, the start of psychedelia and the beginnings of rock, or just simple mod pop.

This compilation accompanies my book 1966: The Year The Decade Exploded, which explores the various events and themes of the year in 12 essays, based around one record a month. The record is, of course, a 45 – and some of them are included here, such as ‘The Quiet Explosion’ (Chapter 1: January – CND, Protest and the Conspiracy of Silence) or ‘I’ll Be Your Mirror’ (Chapter 6: June – The Velvet Underground and Andy Warhol’s America).

It is also designed to stand alone – a mix of the familiar and the obscure, informed by memory. I turned 13 in late summer 1966 and spent much of the year bathed in the music I saw on television and heard on Radio Caroline South. The 45 records beamed in on that station – James Brown’s ‘I Got You (I Feel Good)’, the Association’s ‘Along Comes Mary’, ? and the Mysterians’ ‘96 Tears’, to name but three – went very deep, and that mixture of mainstream pop, mod pop, West Coast, soul and Motown has stayed with me as an ideal.

Coming Soon: Love - Reel to Real

Out Nov. 27.

High Moon Records' deluxe reissue of the final studio album from one of rock musics most gifted and enigmatic legends - on CD for the first time in a deluxe Digipak with a full-color, 32-page booklet, and expanded with 12 bonus tracks. Reel To Real captures Arthur Lee and Love at the peak of their rock/funk/soul powers. Originally released in 1974 on RSO Records, this beautifully packaged, deluxe reissue features vibrant, remastered audio from the original tapes, a 28-page, 9x12-inch LP booklet with an illuminating essay by Rolling Stone's David Fricke, and a trove of candid, unpublished photos.

What Arthur Lee began on Loves Black Beauty (released by High Moon Records to wide acclaim in 2013), he brought to fruition on Reel To Real. Armed with a major label budget, and a powerful, intuitive band, he dug deep into the blues, soul, and rock grooves that first inspired him, reaching out to a new audience with his fierce and forward-thinking personal vision. The album features Arthurs beloved Black Beauty band: drummer Joe Blocker, guitarist Melvan Whittington, and bassist Robert Rozelle, who he referred to as, cats who can play funky and rock; augmented by guitar-ace John Sterling, and cameo appearances by legendary guitarists Harvey Mandel and Buzzy Feiten. To a palette of stinging guitars, explosive brass (arranged by Arthur Lee), deep funk bass and clavinet, splashes of spacey synthesizer, and dream-team female backing vocals, Arthur Lee brought his funkiest and most soulful collection of songs, and channeled the most visceral vocal performances he ever committed to tape.

High Moon Records has unearthed 11 revelatory, previously-unreleased tracks from the original sessions including alternate takes and mixes, live-in-studio rehearsals, and 4 newly-discovered Arthur Lee originals: Do It Yourself, I Gotta Remember, Somebody, and You Gotta Feel It. These songs three fully-produced rockers, and a spare, jaunty, Imagine-era John Lennon, by-way-of Sly Stone studio sketch were previously unknown to all but their original participants, and present a major addition to Arthur Lees catalog. Other bonus track highlights include the guitar fury in the extended, alternate mix of Busted Feet, the eccentric and darkly-comic single mix of You Said You Would, and an impromptu studio rehearsal of Forever Changes outtake Wonder People (I Do Wonder). This ultra-rare bonus material fills out the picture of a fearless, agile and very funky ensemble, led by a masterful singer-songwriter at his feral, exultant best.

Coming soon: Carl Wilson's rare 1981 solo album

Out Sept. 29.

Details:
Carl Wilson took a hiatus from The Beach Boys in an attempt to try to do something slightly more aggressive than what he could do within the confines of the group. His first solo album was released in early 1981 and was crafted at the Caribou Ranch studios that were owned by James William Guercio, who also served as producer. This is the first time this compact disc will be available inb the U.S. It s only other appearance on CD was a Japanese edition that was available for a very short time.

The centerpiece of the album is the absolutely divine Heaven , which Carl would often sing in the later stages of his touring days with the Beach Boys. Carl never rocked harder than he does on The Right Lane and the album closer is Carl s remembrance of simpler times, the beautiful & haunting, Seems So Long Ago .

The in-depth essay is by Billy Hinsche (Dino, Desi & Billy, Beach Boys touring band) who was a member of Carl s band in support of this release. Billy s first hand accounts of life on the road with the group draws us right into the tour experience. This release is mastered from the original master tapes by Vic Anesini and has never sounded better.

Coming soon: Peppy And Virginny In Lapinoland by Hergé

Out Nov. 18 from Fantagraphics.

Hergé’s proto-Tintin comics, which feature funny-animal haberdashers
in the Wild West. Hergé is known worldwide for his plucky, globetrotting, strikingly quiffed hero Tintin. But before the runaway success of this character, the struggling Belgian cartoonist created a number of shorter-lived and less well-known series and characters.
By far the loopiest were 1934’s Peppy and Virginny (“Popol” and “Virginie” in the original), a couple of haberdashers who journeyed to the Wild West in search of new clientele, accompanied by their trusty horse Bluebell— where they ran into savage Indian tribes, evil bandits, and much more. They experienced only one adventure, but it was a doozy!

The crisp, “clear line” drawing style of the earliest vintage Tintin albums combines with a freewheeling, farcical storyline and engaging funny-animal characters (the leads are bears, the Indians are rabbits with ears for feathers, and the main villain is a bulldog) and gorgeous Euro-album coloring to make this a genuine oddball classic of Franco-Belgian comics, and Fantagraphics is proud to present its first American release (and its first English-language release in two decades).

With the Spielberg/Jackson Tintin adaptations and a steady flow of new books about Tintin and his creator (such as last year’s Adventures of Hergé graphic-novel biography), work by Hergé remains in high demand and this book shows a fascinatingly idiosyncratic facet of his career. And it’s a rollicking, hilarious, kid-friendly (if you can give the non-PC 1930s “Injuns” a pass) read to boot. Full-color illustrations throughout.
