Pop Culture Roundup Jan. 24, 2007

55 Bells shares the ultra-cheesy 1979 TV special "Legends of the Superheroes," a camped-up affair featuring Adam West/Burt Ward Batman and Robin team joined by Captain Marvel, Green Lantern, The Flash, Hawkman, Huntress, The Atom and Black Canary.

Michael Chabon, author of excellent, comics industry themed novel "The Amazing Adventures of Cavalier and Clay," is writing a new adventure story to be serialized in The New York Times Magazine.

Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Michael Chabon debuts Jan. 28 in The New York Times Magazine's "Funny Pages" with the next "Sunday Serial." Mr. Chabon's swashbuckling adventure story, "Gentlemen of the Road," an original work commissioned by The Magazine, will appear in 16 weekly installments.

Returning to the roots of action stories that enthralled him in his childhood, Mr. Chabon has created a medieval world set in the kingdom of Arran, circa 950 A.D., in the Caucasus Mountains between the Black and Caspian seas. Grounded in research and historical fact, the story brings to light a little known era in the Middle Ages.

"The Sunday Serial" a showcase for popular fiction, has featured Elmore Leonard, Patricia Cornwell, Scott Turow and Michael Connelly.

"The Funny Pages" includes "The Strip," an exclusive full-color weekly strip that continues with graphic novelist Seth, and the nonfiction humor column, "True-Life Tales." If readers miss an installment of "The Sunday Serial" or want to catch up on "The Strip" or the humor column, "The Funny Pages" section is available at NYTimes.com/magazine.

Underground comix could've been a lot better without the misogynist works of R. Crumb and others, opines Claire Litton in PopMatters.

Ultimately, the underground comix movement was a squandered opportunity. Where there could have been an open forum for feminist art and collaborative, ground-breaking works, there was only hatred and sexism, often inspired by a man who admitted his fear and loathing of women.

As mentioned here yesterday, Seattle's Fantagraphics Book Store is holding an art exhibition celebrating 25 years of Los Bros Hernandez' "Love and Rockets" comics. Via Flog, here's a look at the nify commemorative poster that'll be on sale during the event:

Jart in My Head shares an awesome poster from Marx Toys depicting the manufacturer's range of Johnny West toys from the 1970s.

Universal Pictures wants Clive Owen to star in a series of films based on Raymond Chandler's hardboiled Philip Marlowe detective novels.

The project is in a nascent stage -- they are courting writers and filmmakers -- and they haven't decided which title to adapt.

But they sparked to having Owen narrate the dramas in Chandler's testosterone-laced prose, something Owen did well in "Sin City." The plan is to keep the noir spirit of the Chandler books, and keep the mysteries set in the 1940s in Los Angeles, with Marlowe continuing to be the hard-drinking, wisecracking gumshoe.

DVD: Teen Titans - Trouble in Little Tokyo

Here's info on this direct-to-DVD flick out Feb. 6:

Robin, Starfire, Cyborg, Raven and Beast Boy are back to save the world in their very first film, Teen Titans: Trouble in Tokyo . This time around, the Teen Titans battle a mysterious and menacing Japanese criminal known as Brushogun who has sent a high-tech ninja to attack the young heroes. The battle has only begun for the crime fighting five who pack their bags and take off for Tokyo to take on their newest menace. Yet, the City That Never Blinks might be too much for the teens and the mystery of Brushogun too difficult to solve.

Extras include:
* Robin's Underworld Race Challenge
* "The Lost Episode" - A never before aired Teen Titans episode

Deal Alert: Amazon has "Teen Titans: Trouble in Little Tokyo" on sale now for $13.99 (reg. $19.98).

Denny Doherty of the Mamas and Papas is dead at age 66, Reuters reports.

Doherty, born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, co-founded a folk group called the Colonials in Montreal in 1960 and later drifted into the New York folk scene, where he met Elliot. He joined her in a band, the Mugwumps, along with another Canadian, Zal Yanovsky, later of the Luvin' Spoonful.

Doherty, Elliot and John and Michelle Philips formed the Mamas and the Papas in 1965 after signing a recording contract with Dunhill Records. Between 1965 and 1968 they were a big part of a California pop scene that included such bands as the Byrds and the Beach Boys.

In 1966 "California Dreamin"' became the first of a succession of hits that included "Monday, Monday," "Go Where You Wanna Go," and "Dedicated to the One I Love" that were characterized by soaring harmonies with Dohertry signing tenor.

A live-action film based on the anime flick "Ghost in the Shell" is in the works.

-----------------------------

The New York Times has a feature on the animated adaptation of Marjane Satrapi's graphic novel "Persepolis."

Ms. Satrapi has drawn herself thousands of times. But she found it initially overwhelming to watch her own vivid gestures animated on computer screens in the skylighted atelier that is the film’s headquarters in the 10th Arrondissement. Eventually, she said, she learned to put emotional distance between herself and her character.

“From the beginning I started to talk about ‘Marjane’ and ‘Marjane’s parents,’ ” she explained, “because you cannot do it otherwise. There are people, for example, drawing my grandmother. My grandmother is dead. Here not only is she moving, but I have to look at her, image by image. If I think, ‘This is my grandmother and my story,’ I would start crying all the time. And it’s not easy for the animators if I start talking about me, me, me. I will make them crazy, and they will be walking on eggshells. They won’t let themselves go.

“When my parents came to the studio, nobody breathed. Imagine you are drawing Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, and suddenly a big mouse and a big duck walk in.”

Upcoming Doc Savage and Shadow reprints

THE SHADOW Volume 7: "The Cobra" & "The Third Shadow"
"The weed of crime bears bitter fruit. Crime does not pay. The Shadow Knows!" The Master Avenger returns in two of Walter Gibson's most memorable mysteries. A new crimefighter called The Cobra decimates the Manhattan underworld in a murderous war on organized crime. Has The Shadow finally met his match, or will he be forced to de-fang a human snake? Then, the Knight of Darkness confronts not one but two sinister doppelgangers in The Third Shadow. Which Shadow will have the last laugh? In his foreword, Marvel Comics-great Dick Ayers recalls how The Shadow inspired the creation of the Ghost Rider, while popular culture historian Will Murray explains how The Shadow influenced the creation of classic characters including Batman, the Spider, the Black Bat and the Darkman. This classic pulp collection also features George Rozen's electrifying pulp covers, and all the original interior art by acclaimed illustrator Tom Lovell. Due out in April.

THE SHADOW Volume 8: "The London Crimes" & "Castle of Doom"
"Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow Knows!" The Knight of Darkness returns in two of Walter Gibson's most extraordinary pulp thrillers. First, two legendary crimefighting agencies join forces when The Shadow teams with England's legendary Scotland Yard to investigate The London Crimes and the master criminal known as The Harvester. Then, The Shadow journeys to a strange Castle of Doom, where murder lurks behind its battlements. Mystery and intrigue abound in this thrilling tale of lost treasure, secret underground passages and ghostly apparitions. In honor of The Shadow's first British adventure, popular culture historian Anthony Tollin chronicles the 1930s and 1950s English pulp reprints and the 1940s Australian Shadow radio series. This classic pulp reprint also showcases George Rozen's dazzling pulp covers and all the original interior art by acclaimed illustrator Tom Lovell. Due out in May.

Then, while returning to New York aboard his new submarine Helldiver, the Man of Bronze is attacked by the Pirate of the Pacific in one of his most violent adventures. Then, while returning to New York via ocean liner, the Man of Bronze encounters modern-day Amazons in Lester Dent's all-time favorite Doc Savage story, The Sargasso Ogre. This classic pulp reprint also features the original 1933 pulp covers by Walter Baumhofer from the ultra-rare (and expensive!) seventh and eighth issues of Doc Savage Magazine, the unsold 1936 Doc Savage newspaper strip by Lester Dent and Paul Orban and historical commentary by pulp historian Will Murray, author of seven Bantam Doc Savage novels. Pop focus: The Encyclopedia of Comic Book Heroes

I got a big shock out of the April 2007 solicitations list released by DC Comics earlier this week. The list of what's coming out a few months from now includes a book I'd given up all hope of ever seeing reprinted: The Batman volume of Michael L. Fleischer's "Encyclopedia of Comic Book Heroes."

Originally published in the mid 70s, the tome was the ultimate reference up to that point on the Batman character and his comic book exploits. It's an amazing piece of work, as are Fleischer's other volumes dedicated to Wonder Woman (marketed as "The Encyclopedia of Comic Book Heroes Vol. 2") and Superman (sold as "The Great Superman Book.")

Fleisher, as Bronze Age comics fans likely know, is/was a pretty fine comics writer himself.

Being a cash-poor 10 or 11 year old at the time, I missed the Encyclopedias when they first came out, but bought all three via used bookstores and eBay a few years ago. Had I known DC intended to republish them...

But, at any rate, here's what newcomers to the books can look forward to: Each volume is as an honest-to-goodness encyclopedia covering aspects of each character's personality, supporting cast villains, secret headquarters and special equipment and synopses of their exploits.

The entries are written as if the characters actually exist. For example, the entry for ACE (the Bat Hound) reads, "the courageous brown dog--owned first by engraver JOHN Wilker and later by BRUCE Wayne--the functions periodically, from June 1955 onward, as the canine crime-fighting compation of BATMAN and ROBIN."

Pretty much anything that happened or was mentioned in an issue of Batman, Detective Comics, All Star Comics, The Brave and Bold and World's Finest Comics during Batman's first three decades is recounted and cross-referenced. The same is true for Superman and Wonder Woman in their various comics titles.

An issue-by-issue synopsis of all Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman adventures is offered in each book. The entries, however, end in the mid 60s. I suppose getting any more up to date would've been complicated and perhaps too recent for Fleischer to satisfyingly recount. Emulating Marvel Comics, DC's continuity started getting pretty complicated by the mid 70s and continuing or updating these book would've been a challenge.

Fleischer, for example, doesn't get into the whole business of Earth 1/Earth 2 and multiple versions of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, etc., and probably wisely so. Deciding where the cut off was between the "old" and "new" Batman, etc., would've been a nightmare repaid only in fanboy complaints.

Instead, we get a nice reader's companion to each character's adventures from the late 1930s/early 1940s to the prime of the Silver Age, illustrated with lots of great black-and-white panel reproductions from the original stories.

In a way, it makes great sense for DC to reprint them now as they make great companions to the DC Archives and DC Showcase collections. I just figured that, if they ever got republished, it would've been done in the fan press or something, by TwoMorrows or someone like that. So good on DC!

What I'm interested to know--I don't know who to contact at DC or how to reach Fleisher (although I'd love to print an interview with him about these books), is whether other volumes of the "Encyclopedia" might ever see print.

In the Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman volumes from the 1970s, Fleisher mentions several other planned books, including guides to Green Lantern, the Flash (both Golden and Silver Age?), and "group" volumes dedicated to Captain Marvel/Plastic Man/The Spirit, Doctor Fate/Hawkman/Starman/Spectre and Marvel Comics' Captain America/Sub-Mariner/Human Torch. I'd love to see these!

UPDATE: Fleischer's Wonder Woman and Superman encyclopedias are being reprinted. Click the links to pre-order from Amazon.

Pop Culture Roundup Jan. 17, 2007

Gyneth Paltrow will star as Tony Stark's secretary Pepper Potts opposite Robert Downey Jr. in the new "Iron Man" film, Marvel Comics has announced.

Paltrow will portray billionaire industrialist and genius inventor Tony Stark's indispensable personal assistant, Virginia "Pepper" Potts. Pepper is an invaluable resource to Stark Industries, and one of the few people in Tony's life who can go toe-to-toe with him, occasionally acting as his conscience and working to keep his priorities straight as he secretly defends the world as the armored hero known as Iron Man. Below the surface, Tony and Pepper share a deep attraction for one another although neither is willing to admit it.

Paltrow joins a star-studded cast for Marvel Entertainment's first self-financed and produced feature film, which also includes Oscar(R) nominees Robert Downey Jr. in the title role and Terrence Howard as Jim "Rhodey" Rhodes, Stark's best friend. Jon Favreau is set to direct. This latest move reinforces the continued allure of Marvel's films among Hollywood's most celebrated talent.

The film is slated to hit theaters May 2, 2008.

Live at Massey Hall is the second in a series of archival live concert recordings due out from Neil Young. Here's the press release:

On January 19, 1971, Neil Young performed at Massey Hall in Toronto, Canada. In many ways, this was a major homecoming event. He had left Canada in 1966, soon becoming a member of Buffalo Springfield in Los Angeles, then recording his self-titled debut solo album in 1968. That was followed by "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" with Crazy Horse, then Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's "Déjà vu" in 1970 and his best-selling album "After The Gold Rush." By the time Young came back to Canada for the Massey Hall concert, he had become one of the most exciting and successful singer-songwriters in rock.

Neil Young was performing solo that evening in Toronto, playing many of his well-known songs like "Down by the River," "Ohio" and "I Am a Child." But he also included several new originals that would be featured on his next new album, "Harvest," which had not been released yet, like "Old Man," "The Needle and the Damage Done" and "Heart of Gold." The audience had not heard any of these before, and the night was an historic and moving performance for all.

"This is the album that should have come out between 'After The Gold Rush' and 'Harvest,'" Young says now. "David Briggs, my producer, was adamant that this should be the record, but I was very excited about the takes we got on 'Harvest,' and wanted 'Harvest' out. David disagreed. As I listen to this today, I can see why."

"Live At Massey Hall," produced by Young and the late David Briggs, is the second Reprise Records release in the Neil Young Archives Performance Series, following last year's "Live At The Fillmore East" album. Both are in anticipation of the "Archives Volume I" collection, due this fall. That 8-CD, 2-DVD audiobiography will include Young's music from 1963 to 1972, and feature a treasure trove of previously unreleased recordings, both studio and live, along with concert footage and rare memorabilia from the first decade of Neil Young's long and unequaled career.

More on the Beatles/iTunes rumors from the Toronto Sun. The gist, rumor has it the entire Beatles catalog may be available on iTunes by June. Also, remastered CDs of the catalog also are planned, centering around the 40th anniversary of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in June. Pepper, itself, may be released in some sort of a special edition. We'll see. In the meantime, it'd probably be a good idea for me to start saving my money.
