Dark Horse is doing a second printing of Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1, which hit stands this past Wednesday. Says the publisher:

Since the book
was announced last summer, Dark Horse has garnered a great deal of attention
both in and outside of the comic market. With high profile press coverage,
buzz among fans, and excitement from direct market retailers, orders
exceeded the initial printing of over 100,000 copies!

The upcoming second printing will feature a full bleed version of the
breathtaking Jo Chen cover, with some of the design elements removed for a
cleaner, and more stripped down look. This new version will be arriving in
stores with an on sale date of March 28, just a week before the release of
issue #2. Dark Horse encourages retailers to backorder Buffy The Vampire
Slayer #1 with confidence, as orders will be filled in full with the new
printing.

Warner Bros. wants to fire up a Sherlock Holmes film franchise.

Warner Bros. Pictures is teaming with producer Lionel Wigram to adapt Wigram's upcoming comic book "Sherlock Holmes" for the bigscreen. Neil Marshall ("The Descent") will helm, while tyro scribe Michael Johnson penned the script.

Exact storyline is being kept under wraps, but creative execs at Warners say they are looking for the "Sherlock" team to reinvent the sleuth and his loyal No. 2 Dr. Watson in much the same edgy way that Christopher Nolan has reimagined Batman for Warners.

At the moment it's unclear if "Veronica Mars" will be back for a fourth season. But if it is, there'll likely be changes.

"Veronica Mars" creator Rob Thomas has come up with an idea to fast-forward a couple of years and have Mars studying at the FBI Academy. (As a freshman at Hearst College, Kristen Bell's title character has been taking criminology classes looking to do an internship at the FBI.)

Could be a good move. The show seems a bit adrift at the moment and the quality in both plot and scripts has slipped tremendously this season.

Gareth Hunt, who starred in the 1970s "New Avengers" series, has passed away.

He got his big break playing Mike Gambit in The New Avengers, alongside Joanna Lumley, and was also familiar to millions as Frederick in the hugely popular Upstairs, Downstairs.

In the show Hunt, as Gambit, provided the muscle for John Steed, played by Patrick Macnee. A former mercenary he was a weapons and king-fu expert.

Lost clues: "Par Avion" Ep. 12, Season 3

Synopsis:

Claire flashes back to a tragic car accident in which she was the driver and her mom, the passenger, was severely injured. We also learn--as hinted last season--that her dad is Christian Shepherd, Jack's father.

Claire tells Christian she doesn't even want to know his name--so there's no way she even suspects she and Jack are half-siblings. We don't know whether Jack realizes he has a step-sister.

Back in the present, Claire spots a seagull with a tag on its leg. Figuring these birds are tracked and studied by researchers in the outside world, she gets the idea to capture one and attach a message to it.

Desmond, who has a vision of Charlie falling into the ocean while trying to capture one of these birds, takes extreme and baffling-to-Claire actions to keep Charlie out of harm's way.

Meanwhile, Sayid, Kate, Locke and Danielle--along with their prisoner Mikhail--encounter a bizarre array of huge pylons surrounding the Others' barracks.

Locke pushes Mikhail between two of the pylons and Mikhail is instantly killed by some sort of sonic energy. The crash survivors then knock down a tree, which they use to climb safely over the pylons.

At episode's end, we see the crash survivors sneaking up to the barracks, where they spot Jack happily tossing a football back and forth to the Other Tom, a.k.a. Mr. Friendly.

Clues, observations, speculation:

* Will Claire and Jack ever figure out they're related?

* What's up with Locke? He's acting shifty, having taken some explosives from the Flame station without telling Sayid or Kate. Is he purposefully trying to sabotage their efforts to learn more about the Others/Dharma and get rescued?

* Mikhail reveals that he knows a lot about the crash surivors--their full names, their personal histories, etc. How do the Others get this information? At the start of this season, it's clear they were surprised by the plane crashing on their island. Did they get a passenger list and then use resources from the outside world to prepare dossiers on all of the survivors?

* Again, Mikhail makes reference to a "list" of "good" or undamaged people--pointing out the flaws of his captors:
Kate: flawed
John: angry
Danielle: weak
Sayid: scared
What are the qualities the Others seek in people?

* Mikhail almost reveals that Locke was paralyzed before the crash, but Locke cuts him off.

* Mikhail also makes reference to a great leader--who isn't Ben. Last season, Ben himself made reference to such a leader. Who is it? Alvar Hanso? DeGroot? "Jacob"?

* Here's another look at the map Sayid heisted from the Flame station.

* Claire, like many of the other survivors has "bad dad" issues, ala Jack (same dad!), Kate, Locke, Sawyer, Sun, Hurley etc.

* Has Jack been brainwashed by the Others, or is he just playing along--tossing the ol' pigskin with Tom? Or is Football Jack a clone?

The Comics: An Illustrated History Of Comic Strip Art
By Jerry Robinson
While there are many debates about when the medium of words married with pictures first evolved into what we know today as comics - be it in nascent prehistoric paintings in the caves of France or the more traditional illustrated adventures of such characters as the Katzenjammer Kids which first appeared at the end of the nineteenth century - virtually everyone born in the last one hundred years has read or seen a comic strip at one time in their lives. In an exhaustive historical overview that captures the magic and innovation of this incredibly vibrant art form Jerry Robinson, comics historian, award-winning comics artist and co-creator of the popular Batman villain The Joker, takes us on a journey from the beginning of the comic strip industry to the present day in The Comics. Originally published in the early 1970s, this volume has been revised and updated to include commentary on the last thirty years of comics history: from Mutt & Jeff to Calvin & Hobbes, from George Herrimann's Krazy and Ignatz to Patrick McDonnell's Mutts, Jerry Robinson brings the history of this great industry alive for a new generation.

Meanwhile...: A Biography of Milton Caniff, Creator of Terry and the Pirates and Steve Canyon
By R.C. Harvey
Milton Caniff was one of the most influential American cartoonists of the 20th century. He rose to prominence during World War II when he took the characters in his Terry and the Pirates strip into the war. The trenchant pragmatic patriotism of the strip warmed the hearts and steeled nerves on the home front as well as the battlefront (one of his strips was read into the Congressional Record.) He went on to create Steve Canyon, which was syndicated from 1947 to Caniff's death in 1988.

Milton Caniff, Terry and the Pirates, and Steve Canyon: Meanwhile… traces Caniff's life from the cradle to the grave, marking the milestones in the development of the comic strip that Caniff established. Caniff reshaped the medium and set standards by which all storytelling strips were subsequently judged. Although Caniff adapted to changing fashions, he is best known for innovations such as his impressionistic chiaroscuro drawing style that suggested reality economically with shadow rather than with detail; creating many colorful characters, including the stalwart Pat Ryan from Terry and the Pirates, Burma the shady lady, and, most memorable of all, the Dragon Lady, a beautiful but mysteriously menacing pirate queen who turned Chinese patriot during the War; and enhancing the melodrama of adventure strips by making character development integral to the action-packed plots.

While Milton Caniff provides a biography of Caniff and analyzes his storytelling techniques, it also serves as a history of the medium and reveals the inner workings of the syndicate business (at which Caniff was as expert as he was at cartooning). The book traces Caniff's life from the cradle to the grave, and examines the artistic innovations and work routines of a nationally distributed cartoonist whose career was central the development of the artform, marking along the way the milestones in the development of comic strip artistry that Caniff established. The book charts Caniff's rise to fame and fortune through artistic excellence and patriotic fervor when the characters in his comic strip Terry and the Pirates entered World War II, then recounts the decline of his strip Steve Canyon's popularity (whose protagonist served as an unofficial spokesman for the U.S. Air Force from the Korean War until the end of the strip in 1988) when the same brand of patriotism that had inspired admiration during World War II provoked protest during Vietnam, a bittersweet conclusion to a career spent producing a daily feature for 55 years, a record that would stand for a generation.

Confessions, Romances, Secrets and Temptations>: Archer St. John and the St. John Romance Comics
By John Benson
Confessions, Romances, Secrets, and Temptations is the companion volume to John Benson's popular anthology of romance comics, Romance Without Tears. Published in the 1950s by Archer St. John, the stories in that volume were decidedly different from the typical romance comics, just as St. John was decidedly different from the typical comics publisher. This new book explores the background of these comics and their publisher, including a short biography, interviews with the editors and artists who worked for the company, and critical commentary.

In his research for Romance Without Tears, the author was left with a rich body of material about one of the few quality-driven 1950s comics publishers. St. John's reputation as a fair and honest publisher attracted many of the top artists of the day, including Matt Baker, Ric Estrada, Everett Raymond Kinstler, Joe Kubert, Bob Powell, Leonard Starr, and George Tuska. In addition to interviewing Estrada, Kubert, and Starr, Benson talks with several St. John staffers, including editor Irwin Stein, production man Warren Kremer, and editorial assistant Nadine King. Together they provide an engaging account of Archer St. John and the atmosphere he nourished to create these distinctive comics.

Confessions contains a time chart of every title published by St. John (all genres), showing issue number and date, and a complete, detailed checklist of all the company's romance comics, giving story titles, artist credits, and cross-indexing the extensive reprints. The book is lavishly illustrated with examples of the comics, and includes rare photos and other visuals from the period.

An interesting take on the Paul McCartney switching-record-labels story that's been playing out all over the Web this week:

Sir Paul McCartney is dumping the record label he has used for 43 years in a move which will prevent Heather Mills from earning millions from his future recordings.

The former Beatle is turning his back on Capitol/EMI - who he has been with since the Beatles's first album in 1964 - and is penning a deal with a new label run by coffee makers Starbucks.

In recent months, Sir Paul has been offered a £25 million advance for his next four albums from Capitol/EMI.

Being an advance which is payable immediately, Heather would have been able to stake a claim to half of it as part of their ongoing divorce.

Industry sources claim that point was pivotal in Sir Paul's decision to let the deal lapse and refuse to renegotiate with the label so that Heather would not have access to the earnings.

An all-star roster of voices will contribute to an animated "Horton Hears a Who" film, including: Jim Carrey, Steve Carell, Isla Fisher, Carol Burnett, Seth Rogen, Will Arnett, Amy Poehler, Dan Fogler, Dane Cook, Jaime Pressly and Jonah Hill.

The film follows elephant Horton (Carrey) who believes he hears voices on a speck of dust, which turns out to be a town called Who-Ville. Carell will play the Mayor of Who-Ville while Burnett will play Sourpuss Jane Kangaroo who bullies and teases poor Horton. Fox/Blue Sky will release HORTON on March 14, 2008, leaving them without an animated film in 2007, the first time since 2004.
