Pop Culture Roundup April 13, 2007

Rumor has it Laurence Fishburne will supply the voice of Galactus in "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer."

-------------------

From Booksteve: Captain Marvel vs. Captain Marvel in the Wall Street Journal 1968.

--------------------

The gray Iron Man suit makes at least a cameo appearance in hero's upcoming big screen debut. Just goes to show stuff designed by Jack Kirby 40 years ago still looks supercool today.

----------------------

Christina Ricci is set to star opposite Emile Hirsch in the upcoming live-action "Speed Racer" movie. According to the press release:

Ricci will play Trixie, Speed's loyal and courageous girlfriend, who also proves to be a formidable ally both on and off the racetrack.

Slated to be released on May 9, 2008, "Speed Racer" also stars John Goodman and Susan Sarandon as Speed's devoted parents. The film is being written and directed by Larry and Andy Wachowski, marking the brothers' first writing/directing collaboration since the "Matrix" movies. Joel Silver, who previously worked with the Wachowskis on both the "Matrix" movies and "V For Vendetta," is producing the film under his Silver Pictures banner.

Based on the classic series created by anime pioneer Tatsuo Yoshida, the live-action "Speed Racer" will follow the adventures of the young race car driver Speed in his quest for glory on and off the track in his thundering Mach 5. In addition to Speed and Trixie, the movie will feature other characters that fans of the show will remember, including Speed's family and his mysterious arch-rival, Racer X.

The new high-octane actioner will showcase the kind of revolutionary visual effects and cutting-edge storytelling that have become the benchmarks of the Wachowski brothers' films, taking "Speed Racer" into the 21st century.

I'm loving Waffyjon's continuing series of images of classic G.I. Joe toys. I had this cool scuba diver, sea sled set.

Details on Popeye The Sailor 1933-1938 Volume 1 DVD set

This is four-disk set is now available for pre-order for $45.49 from Amazon (regularly $64.98).

More info Warner Home Video:

The most popular sailor in animation history is certainly “strong to the finish.” Nearly 75 years after his Silver Screen debut, he’ll bring to DVD for the first time the cartoons that first made him famous when Warner Home Video (WHV), Hearst Entertainment and King Features Syndicate release Popeye The Sailor 1933-1938 Volume 1. These classic Popeye animated shorts made Popeye, Olive Oyl and Bluto national pop icons and have been demanded by fans for generations. Available on July 31, 2007 for $64.92 SRP, the 4-disc Authorized Edition DVD collection includes 60 original remastered and unedited theatrical shorts created by the legendary Max Fleischer.

Popeye The Sailor was introduced to the American audience in 1933 and became one of the most endearing and successful characters in animation history, mainly because of his unique vernacular and hilarious catch phrases. His adventures were strange, humorous and often supernatural as he traveled all over the world to resolve conflicts with enemies. Much like the other animation icons of the 1930s, the Popeye plots invoked traditional values, possessed uncompromising moral standards and resorted to force only when threatened. A softie for his lady love Olive Oyl, Popeye usually embarked on conflicts with villains like Bluto and Sea Hag when they made a move on his “sweet patootie.” Popeye was usually clobbered at first, until he ate his spinach and gained superhuman strength to defeat his opponent. With his enormous muscular forearms and corncob pipe in mouth, Popeye was always victorious after he ate his spinach.

Popeye The Sailor 1933-1938 Volume 1 includes more than nine hours of cartoons -- 58 (7- to10-minute) theatrical black-and white-shorts and two two-reeler 20-minute color cartoons. Some of the most memorable shorts from the DVD are the remastered “Blow Me Down!” and a cameo appearance by Betty Boop dressed as a hula dancer in the 1933 “Popeye the Sailor” cartoon, the short in which Popeye made his first animated appearance. The four-Disc DVD set also includes the Academy Award-nominated “Popeye The Sailor Meets Sindbad the Sailor” and more than five hours of incredible bonus features, including:

* Popeye Commentaries – Including historians, animators and filmmakers
* “Behind the Toons” – These featurettes are in depth looks at select cartoons, characters and creators
* “I Yam What I Am: The Story of Popeye the Sailor Man” – All-new documentary
* “The Evolution of Animation: The History of the Fleischer Studios” – All-new documentary
* “Max Fleischer and the New York Style” – All-new documentary
* Bonus Popeye Shorts – Including “Let’s Sing with Popeye” and “Popular Science”
* Bonus Fleischer Cartoons – Including “Poor Cinderella,” “Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy” and “Superman”

“Popeye is an icon – he represents good and the underdog. This sailor has been integral to pop culture for over seven decades,” said Jeff Brown, WHV Senior Vice President and General Manager, Television and Franchise. “Popeye fans have been requesting the DVD of this illustrious collection for ages and we are thrilled to be releasing Popeye The Sailor 1933-1938 Volume 1, the remastered and unedited shorts for the established fan and those of the next generation.”

Just When You Thought Things Couldn't Get Worse: The Cartoons and Comic Strips of Edward Sorel
Edward Sorel is widely recognized as America's premier illustrator. But when he wasn't painting covers and doing drawings for The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Time, Rolling Stone, and many other mass circulation magazines, he was indulging, over the last 30 years, in his first love—making comic strips.
Sorel's strips are iconoclastic, cynical, and universally excoriating. No target escapes his watchful wrath: politicians, theological dynasties, ideologues left and right, lawyers, publishers, and the usual gang of movers and shakers—panderers, philistines, money-grubbers. (Nor does he spare himself.) Culled from the pages of The Nation, The Village Voice, Penthouse, and other magazines, Sorel proves he is that most dangerous of creatures—a cartoonist with a chip on his shoulder, an inveterate troublemaker, a burner of bridges.

Pop Culture Roundup April 12, 2007

Family Tree, out June 19, is a collection of rare tracks from British cult folkie Nick Drake.

The set includes Drake's own take on tracks like "Cocaine Blues," a number of Jackson C. Frank's songs, Bob Dylan's "Tomorrow Is a Long Time" and Bert Jansch's "Strolling Down the Highway." It also contains early versions of "Day Is Done" and "Way to Blue" (both from his 1969 studio album "Five Leaves Left"), plus nearly a dozen unreleased Drake originals like "Blossom" and "Come Into the Garden." The lo-fi nature of the recordings is preserved, with audible bits of Drake speaking and conversing between tracks.

-----------------

Eric Johnson, who plays Whitney Fordman on "Smallville," is set to star in the Sci Fi Channel's new Flash Gordon series.

The 22-hour series updates the comic-strip franchise and is slated for an August premiere. Johnson will play space-traveling adventurer Gordon, who is joined by companions Dale Arden and Dr. Hans Zarkov. Ordinary people thrust into extraordinary circumstances, they find themselves as Earth's last line of defense against the forces of the merciless dictator Ming.

--------------------

Author Kurt Vonnegut has passed away.

Vonnegut's more than a dozen books, short stories, essays and plays contained elements of social commentary, science fiction and autobiography.

"He was sort of like nobody else," said fellow author Gore Vidal. "Kurt was never dull."

---------------------

The Beatles and EMI have settled legal differences the could pave the way to downloads of the Fabs' music.

"It seems like it is heading in that direction," Jupiter analyst Mark Mulligan told Reuters of the Beatles catalogue. "The conversation has changed from an 'if' to a 'when'."

-----------------------

Speaking of Beatles, New York Times Beatles expert Allan Kozinn has more on Neil Aspinall, the group's longtime confidant who stepped down from his position as head of Apple Corps a couple of days ago.

Saying that Mr. Aspinall “has decided to move on,” with none of the usual platitudes about spending time with his family or pursuing other interests, makes it sound like something’s up. Did he suddenly quit? Was he fired? Was there something to the illogical rumors that the Beatles were dissatisfied with the February agreement between their Apple and the computer company?

People close to Apple say that Mr. Aspinall is simply retiring. He turns 65 in October and had heart problems in the 1990s. Perhaps, having spent 46 years at the Beatles’ beck and call, he wanted to reduce his stress.

--------------------

Classic "Doctor Who" writer Dave Martin, who penned such adventures as "The Claws of Axos" and "The Three Doctors," has passed away.

Martin may, however, be best remembered as the co-creator of K9, the metal dog who proved such a hit last year when he returned in School Reunion. He's also due to star in his own animated series soon.

Lost clues: "One of Us" ep. 16, season 3

Synopsis:

Juliet joins Jack, Sayid and Kate on their trek back to the crash survivors' beach camp.

Along the way, we see flashbacks relating Juliet's arrival on the island (by submarine) to do scientific research for the Others.

We learn that, for some reason, women on the island cannot give birth. Juliet is working on a drug that prevents the problem and we learn that Claire was part of her research.

Back in the present, Claire suddenly becomes very ill. When Juliet arrives, she tells Jack she can help--Claire's problems are the result of the research she did, and Juliet knows where to find a supply of medications that can help. Jack lets her go for the meds, but Sayid and Sawyer--very suspicious of the Other in their midst--follow.

Juliet is able to administer the meds and Claire quickly recovers. Juliet ends up looking pretty good in the eyes of the crash survivors. However--in another flashback--we see that Juliet is very much a spy. Ben and she have carefully planned it to look like Juliet had been left behind by the Others and somehow caused Claire's "illness" to flare up at precisely the right time. What are they up to?

Clues, observations, speculation:

* What ARE Ben and Juliet after?

* If pregnant women really are in danger on the island, what will happen with Sun? And what about Kate? She and Sawyer got together while captives of the Others. Is Kate pregnant too? Did the Others want her to get that way?

* What's up with the symbol on the tree near the drop point for Ethan's supplies, where Juliet retrieves the meds to help Claire? It's very similar to the brand Juliet received on her back.

* Ben makes reference to Jacob and tells Juliet the Others have the ability to somehow cure Juliet's sister of cancer. Who is Jacob? And how do the Others cure cancer? And, if they can, why couldn't they help Ben?

* Is Jacob real, or just a "Wizard of Oz" creation of Ben, playing the man behind the curtain?

* Where and why did the Others go and when are they coming back?

* It seems the Others want to be a self-perpetuating society apart from the rest of the world. But that's hard to do when nobody can have children. It seems this is why they abducted kids from the plane and why they recruited Juliet.

* In flashbacks, we see Juliet had a relationship with Goodwin, the Other who was killed by Ana Lucia.

* Immediately after the crash, we see Ben asking for details background information on all the crash survivors and later Juliet spouts off deep dark secrets she knows about Sayid and Sawyer. But this information couldn't have come from conventional detective work. How, for example, could the Others know about the man Sawyer killed the night before his ill-fated flight? They had to be spying on him, which means they predicted the crash, or they must have some psychic, mind-reading way of learning about the crash survivors too.

* Juliet is led to believe she'll be taking a flight to the island, but she's actually tranquilized and put on the submarine. We see her, with Richard Alpert and Ethan, awaiting a flight via Herarat Aviation.

* What does Herarat mean? A similar word is Ararat, the supposed resting places of Noah's Ark. It also could mean "her a rat," a hint to viewers that Juliet is, indeed, untrustworthy.

* Or, maybe more likely, Herarat is an anagram for Earhart, as in lost aviator Amelia. Maybe the island's Adam and Eve are Earhart and her co-pilot Fred Noonan.

* Since Juliet only wakes up after the sub has supposedly arrived at the island, is it possible the sub is a fake? That she arrived on the island in some other fashion?

* Note the Dharma-ish, I-Chingish symbols on the sub.

Pop Culture Roundup April 11, 2007

The Bat-Blog shares a complete set of lobby card images from the 1966 Batman movie.

------------------

Booksteve weighs in on "Shazam" screenwriter John August's doltish comments about old Captain Marvel comics being essentially worthless.

August tells us more recent Cap comics written by "Real World" boy Judd Winick are more instructive in developing a film incarnation of the character than the classic tales created by Otto Binder and C.C. Beck. I foresee a dull, "serious" movie Cap that's essentially Superman with a lightning bolt on his chest. And it'll probably be as uexciting and crappy as the recent Superman film.

Pop Culture Roundup April 8, 2007

John August, screenwriter for a planned Captain Marvel film, doesn't see much value in the original comic book exploits of the character.

Why I’m not including the vintage collections
DC publishes hardcover anthologies that gather up decades’ worth of Captain Marvel comics. If I were writing a dissertation on the evolution of the Captain Marvel character, these would be invaluable. But I’m not. So every time I read one of these, I’m struck with the same realization I encounter trying to watch The Honeymooners or a black-and-white movie: Wow. Old things suck.

Yes, I know that will piss off the vintage comics fans, who insist that the original incarnations are the purest forms of a character. But what you quickly realize is that old-time comic books were awkwardly written, crudely drawn, and bewilderingly inconsistent with their rules. They were making up the art form as they went along, and today’s comic books are better for the accumulated wisdom.

Vintage fans are free to disagree. There’s a vast but finite amount of comic books to last them through their days.

Great. I'll stick with the vintage comic books then and skip the crappy movie you're writing, John. But the thought comes to mind: If comic book heroes in their original form are somehow not good enough for those writing movies--let alone current comic book writers who feel the need to update and make more "realistic" these characters--why not use your incredible cutting edge talents to create your own, new heroes that matter meet your oh-so-hip needs?

I mean, what's the point of making a Captain Marvel film if it doesn't evoke the whimsical spirit of the Fawcett Comics incarnation of the character? Anything DC did afterwards was either a pale imitation or completely missed the point.

Speaking of crappy comic book movies, Ghost Rider co-creator Gary Friedrich has sued Marvel Enterprises, Sony Pictures Entertainment and others involved with the recent "Ghost Rider" film for copyright violations.

Friedrich claims the copyrights used in the film and in related products reverted from Marvel to him in 2001.

...Friedrich...accuses Marvel of waste for failing "to properly utilize and capitalize" on the Ghost Rider character. Marvel's attempts to do so, Friedrich claims, have only damaged the value of his work by failing to properly promote and protect the characters and by accepting inadequate royalties from co-defendants. Friedrich also claims that toymaker Hasbro and videogame firm Take-Two have improperly created merchandise based on the characters.

----------------------

And here's another case of "why bother?": Screenwriter/producer David Goyer of "Batman Returns" fame wants to use the character of Green Arrow in an upcoming film, in which the hero is "incarcerated in a special prison and stripped of his powers."

"Super Max" begins with a traditional comicbook hero, but the storyline takes a turn as Green Arrow's true identity is revealed and he's forced to band together on an escape attempt with the very villains he's previously imprisoned.

I mean, why make it Green Arrow? Especially, since Green Arrow has no "powers" to begin with? Only the marksmanship necessary to land a boxing glove arrow on a villain's jaw? Why not create you're own friggin' hero? and save on all the royalties, etc., you'll need to split with DC for the honor of using their character in name only? Most of the general public has never even heard of Green Arrow in the first place, so the name itself is no draw.

Head-scratching news from Beatle land: Neil Aspinall, with the band since its first days first as a road manager and then for decades as the head of its Apple Corps management company, is leaving. Is he retiring? Was he fired? This news release offers no explanation. One thing's for sure, though: If there was a fifth Beatles, Neil is/was the guy--closer to the band members than producer George Martin or their late manager Brian Epstein.

London, England, Tuesday, April 10, 2007 – Today Apple Corps Ltd. announced that Jeff Jones will become Chief Executive Officer of Apple Corps Ltd.

Apple welcomes Jeff, who comes with over 30 years experience in the music business with a brilliant record. He leaves his position of Executive Vice President, Legacy Recordings/Sony BMG Catalog Worldwide where he has been since 1995.

Apple also announces the departure of Neil Aspinall, who had been with John, Paul, George and Ringo for a spectacular 40 plus years, during which he played an indispensable role for the four. He was there since the inception of the band in Liverpool and has meant so much to the Beatles' family for all these years and still does. However, he has decided to move on. Apple as a whole, and each member of this company, wishes him great success in whatever endeavor he chooses to pursue in the future.
