Fred Hembeck draws the original X-men.

Talk show Tom Snyder, of "Tomorrow Show" fame, has died.

Known for his improvised, casual style and robust laughter, Snyder conducted a number of memorable interviews as host of NBC's "The Tomorrow Show." Among his guests were John Lennon, Charles Manson and Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols.

Jon Favreau, director of the upcoming Iron Man film, will script a comic book about ol' Shellhead as well.

The ...four-issue Iron Man: Viva Las Vegas mini-series, which is slated for release around the time that the Iron Man movie debuts on May 2nd, 2008. Favreau will be working with Adi Granov, the artist who designed the Iron Man suit used in the movie.

Image Comics has plans to publish new comics series based on some of Jack Kirby's late-career creations, says Image Publisher Erik Larsen.

It will be two books to begin with. Silver Star covers Earth - Captain Victory covers all space and both will be packed with awesome Kirby characters and concepts many of which have only appeared as sketches. The idea is to introduce these characters one after another the same way that characters were introduced in other Kirby books over the years. What I'd like to do is feature Jack's original drawings and whatever notes he might have had in the back of the books to give readers insight into what Jack drew and what we had to work with. In the Silver Star book, for example, there are a few drawings that feature characters that didn't make it into the book. In Jack's original Silver Star pitch there was a whole gang of guys that wound up on the cutting room floor and Jack redesigned his "Angel of Death" character so much that he doesn't look like the same guy. That original design was cool as all hell and I want to put that design to good use. Jack has numerous cosmic characters that would fit right in to Captain Victory and Earthbound characters would be right at home in Silver Star and we can mix and match as well, having cosmic characters appearing in Silver Star and non-cosmic characters popping into Captain Victory.

The "Close Encounters of the Third Kind: 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition" out Nov. 13 includes all three cuts of Steven Spielberg's 1978 film in a multi-disc DVD set or all on one packed high-definition blu-ray disk. According to the press release:

The Original Theatrical version of Close Encounters of the Third Kind was released on screens in 1977 and was never available on home video. Spielberg released a re-edited Special Edition theatrically and on VHS in 1980 wherein he deleted several smaller scenes and added other sequences including scenes of Dreyfuss inside the alien mother ship at the end of the film.

In 1998, the Collector’s Edition was released on home video with a limited theatrical run and featured Spielberg’s definitive director’s cut with changes, some small and subtle, as well as a change eliminating the interior mother ship scenes from the end of the Special Edition, thus restoring the original ending. The Close Encounters of the Third Kind: 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition is the first collection to include all three versions of the film.

Dark Horse Comics is reviving its Dark Horse Presents anthology comic online--with some big names attached.

"MySpace Dark Horse Presents" takes its cues from the original Dark Horse Presents, a hard copy comic book published from 1986 to 2000, where high celebrated comics including Frank Miller's Sin City and Paul Chadwick's Concrete, made their mark in issues of the anthology and were later spun off into their own standalone comic franchises.

The inaugural August issue of "MySpace Dark Horse Presents" goes live on MySpace today and will include the following comics:

-- Sugar Shock, the debut new comic from artist Fabio Moon and Joss Whedon, creator of the popular television shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly, and author of the highly successful Dark Horse Comics miniseries, Fray, among others

-- The Umbrella Academy by artist Gabriel Ba and Gerard Way, lead singer of the band My Chemical Romance

-- Samurai by Ron Marz and Luke Ross

-- Comic-Con Murder Mystery by Rick Geary

Pop Focus: Land of the Giants

"Land of the Giants" was another of producer Irwin Allen's campy-colorful 60s TV sci-fi series (the others included "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea," "Lost in Space" and "The Time Tunnel"). It ran on ABC from 1968 to 1972.

There were 51 episodes in total--all of which are were recently released on DVD in an appropriately sized giant box set. The nine-disk package includes all sorts of additional goodies, too, including the show's pilot episode, an issue of the LOTG comic book, trading cards, iron-on patch and more.

The show focuses on the adventures of Earth people who, in futuristic 1983 are traveling on a commercial spacecraft from Los Angeles to London when they're zapped by a mysterious energy beam (are starting to get the sense the creators of "Lost," may've watched this show as kids?) and are immediately transported to a plant remarkably like their own. But much, much bigger. And they're still tiny. You can imagine the sort of problems that might arise for the teensy castaways.

In the years since it's aired, the show has become a bit of a cult item and excitement about the box has been high.

To celebrate, here's a collection of LOTG-related info, links and images we hope you'll enjoy.

"Land of the Giants" Cast

Gary Conway as Captain Steve Burton
Don Marshall as Dan Erickson
Don Matheson as Mark Wilson
Kurt Kasznar as Alexander Fitzhugh
Stefan Arngrim as Barry Lockridge
Deanna Lund as Valerie Scott
Heather Young as Betty Hamilton

Numerous stars also made guest appearances on the show, including Jonathan Harris from "Lost in Space" and Alan Hale Jr. from "Gilligan's Island."

BOOM! Studios has comic book-adaptations of "The Godfather" in the works. According to a press release, BOOM! will publish both

"...a graphic novel and a series of
mini-series based on the iconic Mario Puzo-penned novel and films
beginning in Winter 2007. The series will be written by an
as-yet-unannounced writer ("Jaws will drop," says Richie) and the
first arc will be illustrated by BOOM! veteran Greg Scott, whose
previous BOOM! titles include X ISLE and ENIGMA CIPHER.

"The thing about THE GODFATHER," says Chip Mosher, BOOM! Studios'
Marketing and Sales Director, "is how recognizable it is. All around
the world, people know the movie, they quote lines from it in every
day. Who doesn't recognize Marlon Brando as Don Corleone?"

-----------------------------

In further "Godfather" developments, Sideshow Toys will be doing a line of collector figures based on the movies. Sideshow also just acquired the licenses to do "Tomb Raider," "Aliens vs. Predator" and "Conan the Barbarian" figures.

Prince Charles has turned down a guest spot in this year's Doctor Who Christmas special.

Phil Collinson, Doctor Who's producer, says, "We recently approached Charles because we had some great ideas for him in the show. "Unfortunately he politely declined but he did say he was a big fan of the show."

-------------------------------

Newsarama interviews cartoonist Jeff Smith about his new project, "RASL."

The story is about a thief -- an art thief -- who is known to the police as "RASL," because that's the tag he leaves whenever he steals a piece of art. He spray paints RASL on the wall in the spot where the art was. RASL has this ... how do I describe it? ... a full spectral immersion suit that he's invented that really, basically, is made of these giant jet engines that he straps to his shoulders and his knees that have magnets in them, and he can create thermal-magnetic disturbances through space-time and step between dimensions. So if you were a really rich person who wants to collect, say, a Mona Lisa, you could pay RASL, and he'll go to another dimension and steal the Mona Lisa for you!

Can you tell Comicon is on in San Diego? There's loads of comics and pop culture news coming out. Like, for example, Dark Horse Comics is reviving Warren Publishing's Eerie and Creepy titles. Along with new material in those tites, Dark Horse will publish a series of hardcover archives collecting classic tales from Warren's original mags.

Many of today’s brightest stars will lend their talents to the venture, including horror legend Bernie Wrightson (City of Others) and modern master Steve Niles (30 Days of Night, Criminal Macabre).

Creepy is best remembered for its classic horror and was hosted by Uncle Creepy, while Eerie often ventured into science fiction and featured Cousin Eerie as its host. The rest of the gang includes Hunter, Child, El Cid, Marvin the Dead Thing, and the newly developed Creepy Family. The magazines, originally published by Jim Warren are remembered as presenting some of the era’s greatest genre comics work.

“Both Creepy and Eerie are fondly remembered by comics fans as representing the best of science fiction and horror, and Dark Horse is proud and excited to relaunch these classic titles,” said Dark Horse publisher Mike Richardson.

The deal also may lead to Creepy and/or Eerie titled TV and movie projects, the press release adds.

-------------------------------

In another press release, Dark Horse reveals they'll also be publishing collections of Marvel Comics' Indiana Jones comic book adventures, as well as publishing new Indy titles.

In February 2008, Dark Horse Comics will publish the first of two Indiana Jones Omnibuses collecting Dark Horse's previous entries in the saga. Then April sees the release of volume one of Indiana Jones Adventures—a digest-sized graphic novel designed for the enjoyment of young readers as well as adults. The Indiana Jones Adventures volumes and the Omnibuses will continue on a quarterly basis—including Omnibuses for the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles and the original Marvel run of Indiana Jones comics.

------------------------------

And, DC Comics will be publishing a hardcover comics collection based on the "Heroes" TV series.

-------------------------------

Speaking of Comicon, here's a great picture thread with loads of new images of new action figures making their debut at the con, including new Marvel Legends figures from Hasbro.

Frank Millers talks to Variety about his in-the-works Spirit film, based on the works of cartoonist Will Eisner.

When tasked with selecting the right hook from 12 years of "The Spirit" comics, Miller embraced an old favorite. "It's the story of Sand Saref," he says, referring to a plot that first ran in newspapers on Jan. 8, 1950, full of danger-laced romance, espionage and early germ-warfare elements. "It's about the first love of Spirit's life, who has turned to a life of crime, and he has to bring her to justice."

The choice holds special significance for Miller, who has cited Saref as an inspiration for the popular Elektra character he created for the "Daredevil" comic.

DVD: Josie and the Pussycats - The Complete Series

Out Sept. 18, this 2-disk set collects the entire 1970 animated series. You can pre-order it now from Amazon.

Details:

Loved by television audiences for their catchy songs and exciting escapades, Josie and the Pussycats originally debuted on CBS’ Saturday morning lineup. The characters were first created by John Goldwater and Richard Goldwater for the Josie and the Pussycats comic book and were designed by Dan DeCarlo. Hanna-Barbera Productions adapted the comic book into a Saturday morning television program. The series followed the exploits of the all-girl animated pop music group which would get caught up in wild adventures, dangerous spy capers and intriguing mysteries while they toured the world with their entourage.

Donning leopard print leotards, long tails and ears for hats during their performances, the group was comprised of Pussycats lead Josie McCoy on guitar, ditsy Melody Valentine on drums and Valerie Brown on tambourines. Their entourage consisted of Josie’s handsome boyfriend and band roadie Alan Mayberry, their cowardly manager Alexander Cabot, and Alexander’s scheming, cantankerous sister Alexandra Cabot, whose mission was to steal Alan away from Josie and take over as the Pussycats’ lead. Lastly, they were joined by their snickering feline companion Sebastian, who not only happened to be just as sneaky and catty as Alexandra but would carry out a lot of her dirty work which would usually get the whole gang into some kind of trouble.

“We think television fans will enjoy re-discovering this wonderful cartoon series. The stories are well-written and clever, the music is infectious, and the animation is bright and lively, presented in a way only Hanna-Barbera can,” said Dorinda Marticorena, WHV Vice President of Family, Animation & Sports Marketing. She added, “Josie and the Pussycats is a delight and is sure to make viewers reminisce about the Saturday mornings they spent watching their favorite cartoons.”

Josie and the Pussycats: The Complete Series will include a bonus documentary focusing on Josie and the Pussycats designer, Dan DeCarlo. Titled: The Allure and Charm of Dan DeCarlo, the documentary tells the story of the comic book artist, turned gag cartoonist and illustrator, who contributed to the creation of the legendary Archie comics’ as well as some of the most racy golden age pin up girl art to date. The ironies of this life and the beauty derived from tragedy are what defined Dan as a gentleman, artist and father. The documentary explores the man’s life through the words of his biographer as well as colleagues from his professional life, including renowned comic book superhero creator Stan Lee.
