A new album by Kinks' leader Ray Davies is set for release Oct. 29.

I thought I'd dump DC Comics' "The Spirit" title once artist/writer Darwyn Cooke's jumps ship with issue 12. But now with the news that Sergio Aragones and Mark Evanier will be co-writing, I'll stick around. Much as I enjoyed Cooke's art, I think this new duo will provide better writing. They'll certainly nail the humorous aspects of Will Eisner's character. No word on who'll handle the art.

Aragones also is penning a "Bat Lash" mini-series to be drawn by John Severin.

Details on both announcements here.

UPDATE: Evanier has more info:

It was revealed on a panel at the Baltimore Comic Convention so I guess I should post it here. DC Comics, as you may know, publishes a fine comic that continues the adventures of Will Eisner's The Spirit. Darwyn Cooke has been writing and drawing it but he's departing the book. That's all old news. The new news is that while its next artist has not yet been announced, the writing will be handled by Sergio Aragones (the plots) and me (the words). I'll tell you more about it when there's more to tell.

Jazz keyboardist Joe Zawinul has passed away, Billboard reports. Zawinul co-led the band Weather Report with saxophonist Wayne Shorter and, before that, was a key member in groups led by Miles Davis and Cannonball Adderley.

The Guardian reviews Brian Wilson's performance at London's Royal Festival Hall last night, which saw him debut a new collection of songs.

But when Wilson and his band reappear and perform That Lucky Old Sun, something remarkable happens. Essentially a series of pastiches of the various styles he minted in the 60s - the opening Morning Beat bears a hint of both Dance Dance Dance and Do It Again - it's infinitely more enjoyable than most observers might have expected: the harmonies soar, the tunes lodge in your memory. Midnight's Another Day isn't the most beautiful melody Wilson has written, but it's the most beautiful he's managed for decades, and even he realises it. For a moment, the disconcerting expression on his face vanishes, replaced by a smile of unalloyed delight.

CD: Goffin & King Song Collection 1961-1967

Out Oct. 30 on the UK's Ace label, this one-disk release compiles the songwriting duo's biggest hits, along with a few rarities. You can pre-order it now from Amazon.

Details:

Everyone who cares about popular music knows and loves the classic songs of Gerry Goffin and Carole King. Between 1959 and 1967 the couple wrote some of the most enduring hits of all time, including 'Will You Love Me Tomorrow', 'Take Good Care Of My Baby', 'Goin' Back', 'The Loco-Motion' and 'It Might As Well Rain Until September'. Those songs have been anthologised hundreds of times - maybe thousands. Now it's time to shine the spotlight on other great G & K songs that haven't always received the attention they deserve.
This collection blends hits and hard-to-find classics, focusing primarily on the latter but also including the original versions of songs that will have many listeners thinking, "I didn't realise they wrote that!"

Many of these tracks are completely new to CD, and several have never been reissued in any format in 40 years.

Exquisitely packaged, with notes by Mick Patrick and revered songwriter-musician Al Kooper - who interviewed Gerry Goffin especially for this project - and the inevitable array of pix, label shots and assorted ephemera, this will be a sure fire 'must have' for those who have invested in our "Phil's Spectre" and Jack Nitzsche series, and will appeal to anyone whose heart have ever been won by a Goffin-King song, no matter how big of a hit.
