DVD: The Who "Amazing Journey and Six Quick Ones"

Here's info on this double DVD set, available for pre-order now from Amazon.

Amazing Journey: The Story Of The Who and Amazing Journey: Six Quick Ones, two exhilarating feature-length films about one of the seminal and most influential rock bands in history, produced by Spitfire Pictures in association with Trinifold Management, will be released by Universal Studios Home Entertainment on DVD on November 6, 2007.

Spanning over four decades, Amazing Journey: The Story Of The Who reintroduces The Who now and to generations-to-come, as it tells one of the greatest stories of rock. The film tells the unfolding story of The Who and how they have straddled the rock world for forty years, in a tale as gripping in adventure, life and personality as the searing power of their music. The film features all-new, exclusive, never-before-seen interviews with Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey and others, rare and recently discovered concert footage, artist profiles and much, much more, all in 5.1 Surround Sound.

“Amazing Journey transcends all generational barriers and offers a profoundly personal account of rock history,” commented Craig Kornblau, President of Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Universal Pictures Digital Platforms. “As an authorized piece, the film is the definitive anthology of one of the most important bands of our time. We are very pleased to be able to make this film available to those who already love the band, and perhaps more importantly, to showcase its legacy to those who may have not had the good fortune to have seen them perform live.”

The companion feature film, Amazing Journey: Six Quick Ones, takes the viewer inside the mysteries that drive a rock band to the pinnacle of musical achievement.

Deliberately conceived as two complimentary pieces of work, one film for a wide audience and one for the die-hard rock fan, the two films present a complex and complete picture of the legendary musicians as they have never been seen before. Music greats including Sting, U2’s The Edge, Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder and Oasis’ Noel Gallagher, offer insightful commentaries on The Who’s indelible influence. Alongside a companion booklet and additional DVD bonus content, this set comprises one of music’s most collectible and comprehensive compilations ever assembled about one of rock’s greatest bands.

Beginning with their first hit single “I Can’t Explain,” The Who emerged from Mod-Era London to electrify the world with their unique sound. The music and live performances of Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle and Keith Moon tore through the existing boundaries of rock. The band has recorded 11 remarkable albums, including the world’s first rock opera Tommy, and the ensuing masterwork Quadrophenia. The British legends produced some of the most compelling and original music of the era, including the songs, “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” “Happy Jack,” “Pictures of Lily” and the immortal “My Generation.”

ACCOMPANYING FEATURE FILM

The band’s monumental legacy is celebrated not only by flagship title Amazing Journey: The Story Of The Who but also by a second feature film, Amazing Journey: Six Quick Ones. The films will be released side-by-side on two discs in 5.1 Surround Sound. The two features represent approximately four hours of must-see materials, much of which have never been seen before.

Amazing Journey: Six Quick Ones takes us through, in four individual pieces, the virtuoso musical abilities of each band member: Roger Daltrey; Pete Townshend; John Entwistle; and Keith Moon.

Then, in “Who Art You,” the fifth constituent part of this feature, the viewer is taken into The Who’s trademark bullseye, and the Mod and Pop Art movements, as The Who’s 1960s journey to become a band as visual as they were musical is explored;

Finally, in a coup de grace, during 2003, The Who allowed legendary filmmakers, the Pennebakers, into the studio to film them record the hit song “Real Good Looking Boy.” Recorded for the album Then and Now, this work was the band’s first new studio recording in over 20 years. “Who’s Back” – the sixth “Quick One” – is the intimate portrait that emerged of these artists at work.

IN ADDITION, THE DVD SET CONTAINS THE FOLLOWING ADDED BONUSES:

* The Scrapbook: Five Additional Insider Insights into the World of The Who: Dinner with Moon
* A Legal Matter
* Won’t Get Fooled Again
* Cincinnati: The Whole Story
* Royal Albert Hall 2000
* The High Numbers at the Railway Hotel: The earliest footage of the band known to be in existence, seen in its entirety here for the first time.

DC Showcase action figures unveiled

Here are the first four entries in DC Direct's new line of "Showcase Presents" action figures, which are modeled after classic comic artist's renditions of the characters. They'll be out sometime next year.

Note that no artist is specified for Jonah Hex. Also, the Carmine Infantino Batgirl doesn't seem to look much different from the Silver Age Batgirl figure that DC Direct released a few years back. The Curt Swan Superman looks pretty good, though, as well as the Kubert Hawkman. I look forward to seeing more of these.

Students for a Democratic Society: A Graphic History
By Harvey Pekar, Gary Dumm and Paul Buhle
In 1962 at a United Auto Workers’ camp in Michigan, Students for a Democratic Society held its historic convention and prepared the famous Port Huron Statement, drafted by Tom Hayden. This statement, criticizing the U.S. government’s failure to pursue international peace or address domestic inequality, became the organization’s manifesto. Its last convention was held in 1969 in Chicago, where, collapsing under the weight of its notoriety and popularity, it shattered into myriad factions. Through brilliant art and they were-there dialogue, famed graphic novelist Harvey Pekar, gifted artist Gary Dumm, and renowned historian Paul Buhle illustrate the tumultuous decade that first defined and then was defined by the men and women who gathered under the SDS banner. Students for a Democratic Society: A Graphic History captures the idealism and activism that drove a generation of young Americans to believe that even one person’s actions can help transform the world.

Dark Horse Presents: The Savage Sword of Conan
In the mid 1970s following the colossal success of Conan the Barbarian, Roy Thomas helped expand the universe of Conan to showcase further stories and the talents of some of the comics industry's best with the equally popular Savage Sword of Conan magazine. Now, for the first time in over thirty years, these primal tales, featuring Robert E. Howard's most popular character, are available in this, the first in a series of massive trade paperbacks, collecting all Savage Sword Conan stories beginning with issue one. Included in this volume are tales by Roy Thomas, featuring the breathtaking art of such legends as Barry Windsor-Smith, John Buscema, Alfredo Alcala, Jim Starlin, Al Milgrom, Pablo Marcos, Walter Simonson and more. But that's not all. Also included in this tome are Conan's few appearances in the title Savage Tales - for the complete Conan collection! 542 pages.

Kirby Five-Oh!: Celebrating 50 Years Of The "King" Of Comics

The regular columnists from The Jack Kirby Collector magazine have formed a distinguished panel of experts to choose and examine: The best Kirby story published each year from 1938-1987! The best covers from each decade! Jack's 50 best unused pieces of art! His 50 best character designs! And profiles of, and commentary by, the 50 people most influenced by Kirby's work! Plus there's a 50-page gallery of Kirby's powerful raw pencil art, and a deluxe color section of photos and finished art from throughout his entire half-century oeuvre.

Superman vs. Hollywood: How Fiendish Producers, Devious Directors, and Warring Writers Grounded an American Icon
by Jake Rossen
Tinseltown's fascination with the comic icon is detailed in this book, encompassing all the behind-the-scenes machinations that helped shape Superman into a screen legend—and all the derailed projects that have vilified everyone involved. These newly uncovered stories about the odyssey of bringing the Man of Steel to the big screen include the challenge of making Superman appear to fly, and the many casting processes, which at various points had Superman being played by the likes of Bruce Jenner, Robert Redford, Sylvester Stallone, Neil Diamond, Nicolas Cage, Justin Timberlake, Keanu Reeves, and even Muhammad Ali. Based on extensive interviews with producers, screenwriters, cast members, and crew, this exposé spills the beans on all the various TV shows, from the classic The Adventures of Superman to the current hit Smallville; the various animated efforts on both the large and small screens; and the movies—from 1979's smash hit Superman: The Movie to 2006’s wildly expensive Superman Returns. Also included are the stories about the Superman movies that never made it to the screen, helmed by maverick directors Kevin Smith and Tim Burton, and featuring expenditures on scripts and sets that are even more eye-popping than the films’ special effects.

Radio Sound Effects: Who Did It and How, in the Era of Live Broadcasting
by Robert L. Mott
"a delightful mixture of amusing anecdotes with serious documentation of a little-known, but vital, aspect of early radio history...a highly readable history of the entire medium of radio"

CREEM: America's Only Rock 'N' Roll Magazine
With raw photographs of rock's greatest stars and insightful prose by the legendary rock journalists who were stars in their own right, CREEM magazine stood at the forefront of youth counterculture from 1969 to 1988 as "America's Only Rock 'n' Roll Magazine." A product of Detroit's revolutionary counterculture, CREEM cultivated an incredibly gifted staff of iconoclastic scribes, editors, photographers, and graphic artists whose work continues to resonate today, including: Lester Bangs, Dave Marsh, Richard Meltzer, Nick Tosches, and a not-so-famous Cameron Crowe. They invented a raucous new form of journalism, where the writing and photographs were as much an expression of rock 'n' roll as the music itself. CREEM embraced and abused the best and the worst of the era: MC5, Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, the Faces, Lou Reed, the Stooges, T.Rex, Kiss, Mott the Hoople, the Who, the New York Dolls, Bob Seger, Ted Nugent, Aerosmith, the Ramones, Cheap Trick, the Clash, and Van Halen, among many others.

Now the Mouth of the Motor City presents a retrospective of the beautiful haze that was rock's golden age—from the end of the hippie days through glam and punk and into '80s metal. Featuring the best of the magazine's vast archives of photos, illustrations, and articles, CREEM is the authentic rock 'n' roll experience—written for fanatics by fanatics.

Want the new Radiohead album? What's it worth to you?

In Rainbows will be released as a digital download available only via the band's web site, Radiohead.com. There's no label or distribution partner to cut into the band's profits — but then there may not be any profits. Drop In Rainbows' 15 songs into the on-line checkout basket and a question mark pops up where the price would normally be. Click it, and the prompt "It's Up To You" appears. Click again and it refreshes with the words "It's Really Up To You" — and really, it is. It's the first major album whose price is determined by what individual consumers want to pay for it. And it's perfectly acceptable to pay nothing at all.

Pop Culture Roundup Sept. 28, 2007

Critics weigh in on "Moonlight," CBS' new vampire-themed drama, which debuts tonight.

New York Daily News: ...Its elements are so shamelessly copied, the whole show should be sponsored by Xerox.

San Jose Mercury News: Bram Stoker, Anne Rice and Joss Whedon be damned. "Moonlight" is a vampire saga determined to play by its own rules.

...This offbeat approach might give you the false impression that you've tuned into a sassy supernatural thriller bursting with creative ingenuity. Unfortunately, "Moonlight" soon loses its playful oomph and unravels into something that is inert, boring and, at times, almost painful to watch

Detroit Free Press: Although it possesses a few interesting quirks -- Mick sleeps in a freezer, and he has a buddy down at the blood bank to supply him with nourishing corpuscles -- "Moonlight" falls somewhere in the middle of the new paranormal pack. It's neither great nor awful.

Orange County Register: Mick St. John is not the first vampire with a conscience, nor the first to serve as a guardian of a particular human. But he may be the first television vampire with a witty streak that doesn't cross over into camp. He's eager to dispel misconceptions.

No sleeping in coffins, no aversion to garlic, and crosses don't faze him, he tells the camera in an arresting opening, a droll interview with a vampire.

O'Loughlin is terrific as Mick, a regular guy who was smitten, then bitten by his bride Coraline (Shannyn Sossamon) 60 years ago.

Jason Dohring, as Mick's eternal friend Josef, is a great draw – again, more for the Fox or CW viewer than CBS. He was riveting on "Veronica Mars," now he's playing a timeless, arrogant, old-fashioned vampire with little patience for Mick's politically correct approach to being undead. In fact, he's a blood-sucking hedge-fund trader.

Pop Artifact! Captain Marvel watch

Pop Culture Roundup Sept. 26, 2007

The New York Times takes a look at the new "Bionic Woman," which debuts tonight.

NBC’s show, which is more about fembot martial arts and slick “Matrix”-ish special effects than about character development, is oriented toward young male viewers.

The Los Angeles Times also weighs in:

Dark in mood and tone -- on a flat screen, the show is barely visible in direct sunlight -- "Bionic Woman" owes much to the popularity of the graphic novel, the noir sci-fi sensibilities of Philip K. Dick and perhaps Angelina Jolie. None of which is a bad thing. This is the post-feminist, post-9/11 bionic woman -- not only doesn't she need any help, she wouldn't trust it if it were offered. But that won't keep her from getting the job done.

In other words, it's not your mother's "Bionic Woman." It's much, much better.

And Canada's Globe and Mail has a feature story on the new show:

Beyond the basic premise, everything else about "The Bionic Woman" has changed. Gone are the slow-motion running and the springy sound effects when Jaime leaps in the air. And no sign anywhere of Oscar Goldman, the smooth scientist who served as mentor and handler to both Jaime and the Six Million Dollar Man.

Actress Sarah Paulson ("Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip" and "Down With Love") will play Ellen Dolan in the upcoming "Spirit" movie.

---------------------

Effort to remake "The Prisoner" starring Colin Eccleson ("Doctor Who") have fallen by the wayside--just like all of the many previous attempts to resurrect the cult series.

Eccleston's involvement was probably no more than the wishful thinking of Sky One executives. He wouldn't have been a bad choice, although having quit Doctor Who for fear of typecasting, he's unlikely to jump straight into The Prisoner. Daniel Craig would be my Number Six, although of course Craig is now Bonded for the foreseeable future. The link between Bond and Number Six has a good pedigree, by the way. McGoohan, who played a similar sort of secret agent character in ITV's Danger Man, twice turned down the role of 007, Bond's bed-hopping ways being anathema to the sexual morals of the fiercely monogamous star.

The reunited Sex Pistols will play three shows in London.

To coincide with the Sex Pistols reunion, music paper NME.COM said it had started a campaign to propel their song "God Save The Queen" to the top of the charts when it is reissued on seven-inch vinyl in October.

It says the single, banned by radio stations in 1977 because it risked offending the monarchy during the Queen's Jubilee year, was unfairly denied the top spot

"Fear Itself" could also be scheduled during the regular season on Saturday nights as an alternative to the net's drama repeats.

Doctor Who visits Pompeii in season 4

From the BBC:

The Doctor and his new companion Donna are set to travel back in time to the Roman Empire for the fourth series of "Doctor Who," the BAFTA award-winning drama which will transmit on BBC One in spring 2008.

In one of the most ambitious episodes to date, the Doctor, played by David Tennant, and Donna (Catherine Tate) arrive in Pompeii in AD 79, on the eve of the historic eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

The Time Lord and his companion are posed with an immediate dilemma – should they warn the residents of Pompeii of the forthcoming catastrophe or leave them to fend for themselves?

"The Thick Of It" actor Peter Capaldi guest stars as Caecillius and is joined by "Quadrophenia" and "Rose And Maloney" actor Phil Davis who stars as Lucius. Further guest stars include "Howard's Way" and "Born And Bred" actress Tracey Childs who plays Metella.

The filming of the episode took place at Cinecitta studios in Rome, which the Doctor Who team expertly transformed into Pompeii for a week of filming in September of this year.

Executive Producer and Head Writer, Russell T Davies comments: "Arriving in Pompeii marks the start of another exciting adventure for the Doctor and Donna. Donna is stunned to find herself in the midst of history's most famous volcanic eruption. Viewers can expect many more ambitious storylines and a whole host of guest stars in 2008."

The start of the new series will see Donna tracking down the Time Lord during an alien emergency in modern day London. The couple are destined to experience a series of wonderful adventures throughout the new series including meeting one of Doctor Who's most popular aliens, The Ood in a brand new episode, "Planet Of The Ood."

Donna and the Doctor will also be travelling through time for an encounter with the legendary murder mystery novelist, Agatha Christie.

Award-winning actress, Tate is reprising her role as Donna, the runaway bride who featured in last year's Doctor Who Christmas special. Tate will star alongside David Tennant for the complete 13-week new season run.

Freema Agyeman who played Martha Jones, the Doctor's companion throughout the critically acclaimed third series will return to the show to join the Doctor and Donna mid series.

The fourth series of Doctor Who is now in production and will hit BBC One in spring 2008.
