1977 Who concert, plus first Tommy performance, set for DVD

A 1977 performance by the Who at Gaumont State Theatre in North London will be out on DVD and CD in November.

The DVD also will include the band's first live performance of their rock opera "Tommy," from the London Coliseum in 1969.

See one of those 1960s Superboy cartoons that's not being included in Warner Bros. DVD collection of Filmation DC Comics 'toons, likely due to the WB's squabbles with the estate of Superman/Superboy co-creator Jerry Siegel.

Efforts to save Superman house raise 40K

Newsarama reports that efforts to save the Cleveland home where Jerry Siegel co-created Superman have raised over $40,000 to date.

The first week of the month-long auction of original art from Jim Lee, Travis Charest, George Perez and dozens of others (go to http://www.ordinarypeoplechangetheworld.com and see for yourself) raised $34,459, just about three-fourths of the $50,000 needed to replace the roof and siding of the Siegel house at 10622 Kimberly Ave. in Glenville, a Cleveland neighborhood.

Toss in another $2,500 profit from those really cool Chip Kidd “Siegel and Shuster Society” t-shirts and $2,100 from donations and we‘re above $39,000. Meltzer said the donations came in the form of mostly $10 and $20 from comic fans, which made him feel good.

Matthew Sweet, Susanna Hoffs plan followup album

Paste reports that Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hofs are working on a followup to their very fun collection of 1960s pop tunes, Under the Covers Vol. 1.

The second set focuses on the 1970s and beyond.

"Once we did the ‘60s covers, we started thinking we could do the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s. It’s just a fun and easy thing to do," Sweet said in the interview. "So now we’ve recorded about 40 songs for a ‘70s album that I think will come out next year. It’s hard to say what will go on it, but I can tell you that “All Good People” by Yes will be on the album, and Steve Howe plays guitar on the track! That’s one of our exciting tidbits."

The New York Times reviews J.J. Abrams' "The Fringe," which starts on Fox TV tonight.

...as pilots go, this one is sensational, an artful, suspenseful mix of horror, science fiction, layered conspiracies and extended car chases. “Fringe” sets out to stretch the boundaries of conventional network series. So did “Lost” when it began in 2004, but that ABC show was unlike any other drama in recent memory: characters stranded on a tropical island seemingly stalked by unknown and perhaps paranormal forces.

“Fringe” treads on more familiar territory. It is a lot like “The X-Files,” only this variation pairs a trusting female F.B.I. agent with a scientifically minded and skeptical male sidekick. There is even a hint of the paranoia that fueled another hit Mr. Abrams helped shape, “Alias.”
