British session drummer Bobby Graham has died at age 69, reports the NME. Graham played on more than 1,500 records including such hits as Petula Clark's "Downtown," Them's "Gloria," Dusty Springfield's "I Only Want To Be With You" and the Kinks' "You Really Got Me" and "All Day And All Of The Night."

New comics Sept. 15, 2009: Indiana Jones! Spirit! Batman! Brave and the Bold! Warlord! Spidey! Nancy!

New releases of note this week. Click the links to order discounted items from Amazon.

INDIANA JONES ADVENTURES VOL 2 A new, 88-page Indy adventure scripted by Mark Evanier and art by Ethen Beavers.

WILL EISNER'S SPIRIT ARCHIVES: NEW ADVENTURES Collecting Dark Horse Comics' Spirit anthology stories with work by Allen Moore, Neil Gaimin and others. The release continues the numbering and cover design of DC Comics' Spirit Archives series, making this volume 27.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #4
BATMAN STREETS OF GOTHAM #4
The two flagship Batbooks land on the same week (likely due to delays on Batman and Robin #4, I think). So far, I think the Dini-scripted Streets of Gotham is the stronger of the two. Grant Morrison's first storyline (issues 1-3 of Batman and Robin) just didn't go anywhere, wheres I'm intrigued to see what happens next with Dini's storyline.

BRAVE AND THE BOLD #27 More Batman! Writer J. Michael Straczynski takes the reins of this team-up book (shouldn't they reboot the numbering?) The first entry hooks up Batman and Dial H for Hero. Could be fun. The old Haney/Aparo B&B was one of my favorite books.

SHOWCASE PRESENTS WARLORD VOL 1 Good fantasy stuff with story and art by Mike Grell. I used to love this title. Collects 1ST ISSUE SPECIAL #8 and WARLORD #1-28.

WEDNESDAY COMICS #11 The penultimate issue of DC's experiment in a weekly tabloid comics section.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #605 I'm still enjoying my weekly Spidey fix. If you're a lapsed Marvelite, you might enjoy this.

JOHN STANLEY LIBRARY NANCY VOL 1 Comic enthusiasts say this is good stuff. Before my time, but it looks good.

Next DC animated film is "Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths"

The next straight-to-DVD DC Comics animated film is "Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths." From the press release:

An original story from award-winning animation/comics writer Dwayne
McDuffie (Justice League) rooted in DC Comics’ popular canon of
“Crisis” stories.

Bruce Timm (Superman Doomsday, Green Lantern) is executive producer.
Lauren Montgomery (Wonder Woman, Green Lantern) and Sam Liu
(Superman/Batman: Public Enemies) are co-directors.

In Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, a “good” Lex Luthor arrives
from an alternate universe to recruit the Justice League to help save
his Earth from the Crime Syndicate, a gang of villainous characters
with virtually identical super powers to the Justice League. What
ensues is the ultimate battle of good versus evil in a war that
threatens both planets and, through a diabolical plan launched by
Owlman, puts the balance of all existence in peril.

All-star voice cast led by Mark Harmon (NCIS) as Superman, James Woods
(Ghosts of Mississippi) as Owlman, Chris Noth (Sex and the City, Law &
Order) as Lex Luthor, William Baldwin (Dirty Sexy Money) as Batman,
Gina Torres (Serenity, Firefly) as Super Woman and Bruce Davison
(X-Men) as the President.

A great, overlooked talent of comics' Golden Age? Cartoon Snap makes the case for Robotman artist Jimmy Thompson.

-----

"Punk poet" and author of "The Basketball Diaries" Jim Carroll has died at age 60, The New York Times reports.

As a teenage basketball star in the 1960s at Trinity, an elite private school on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, Mr. Carroll led a chaotic life that combined sports, drugs and poetry. This highly unusual combination lent a lurid appeal to “The Basketball Diaries,” the journal he kept during high school and published in 1978, by which time his poetry had already won him a cult reputation as the new Bob Dylan.

Pappy presents a swell, Joe Sinnott-illustrated horror tale from 1952.

-----

The New York Times doesn't seem overly impressed with the film adaptation of "White Out."

The first thing Kate Beckinsale does in “Whiteout” is take a shower. This may be because her character, a United States marshal named Carrie Stetko, needs to rinse off the grime of Antarctica, where she is stationed. Or, as seems more likely, it may be because the filmmakers, realizing that she would be spending most of the movie swaddled in thick parkas and layers of thermal protection, felt that some audience members might enjoy seeing Ms. Beckinsale in her underwear and then out of it behind a strategically fogged glass door.

Which is not to imply that the shower scene, interrupted by a knock at the door — “I’m in the shower,” Carrie cleverly replies — is more contrived or absurd than anything else that happens in this studiously mediocre little thriller
