INDIANA JONES FURTHER ADVENTURES OMNIBUS VOL 2 Another batch of Indy tales originally published by Marvel Comics. These in-color paperback collections are a good read and a great deal. Features scripts by David Michelinie and art by Steve Ditko (!), David Mazzucchelli, Herb Trimpe and Jackson Guice. Including the adaptation of "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom."

BATMAN THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #9 Dig that Sprang-style cover! DC's funnest Batbook teams the Caped Crusader with Catman.

MARVEL ADVENTURES SPIDER-MAN #55 I haven't been following this Marvel title for young readers, but I love the Skottie Young covers they've been featuring of late.

MARVEL MASTERWORKS AVENGERS VOL 2 THE AVENGERS #11-20 collected in an affordable, color paperback. Work by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Don Heck, Dick Ayers and other people of genius.

BOOK OF GENESIS ILLUSTRATED BY ROBERT CRUMB I can see what this looks like in my head. I'll need to leaf through the book to see if I'm right.

BEST AMERICAN COMICS 2009 Cartoonists Charles Burns and Jessica Abel edit this year's compendium of mainly art/alternative comics. A good way to sample a bunch of comics you might not otherwise try.

MICKEY MOUSE & FRIENDS #296 Disney comics are back on the stands! This is a English version of a Mickey fantasy series originally published overseas. And the Donald Duck and Friends series debuting next week is in a sci-fi/spy adventure vein. Don't know if these will be to my, or my kids' liking, as much as classic-style comedy comics might be, but they're worth a look. An upcoming revival of the Uncle Scrooge title is more in the Barks/Rosa tradition, it looks like. In any event, it's wonderful to see these characters back on the stands.

Former "Doctor Who" star Billie Piper is set to appear in a new BBC drama series.

Piper will play a young wife and mother who has a romance with a Polish neighbour in 1950s Leeds.

Sue Johnston and Alun Armstrong also appear in A Passionate Woman, based on Kay Mellor's successful stage play.

"There was interest in the film rights but I held onto them," Mellor said. "Now, with the BBC and British money, it's the project I want it to be."

The drama starts filming in Leeds this month and will air on BBC One in 2010.

The woman who, as a girl, inspired fellow student Julian Lennon to draw a picture he called "Lucy in the Sky with Diamond," which in turn inspired his dad, John, to write a song of the same name, has died.

The St Thomas' Lupus Trust charity said O'Donnell had died aged 46 after losing a fight against the autoimmune disease lupus.

It said Julian and his mother Cynthia, Lennon's first wife, were "shocked and saddened by the loss of Lucy".

"It's so sad that she had finally lost the battle she fought so bravely for so long," the Trust's campaign director Angie Davidson said.

Director Ron Howard plans a big screen adaptation of Image Comics' "The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft."

"It very cleverly uses H.P. Lovecraft in a fictional way, but there's some loose biographical elements. But it certainly has the flavor and the tone of Lovecraft," Howard told me during an interview for an upcoming story on a different topic. "The character is a very young Lovecraft."

Oh man, things don't sound good for Rhino Records:

In the latest indication of the shrinking market for compact discs, Warner Music Group's catalog arm Rhino Records laid off between 30 and 40 staffers on Thursday.

Job losses came in all departments, including A&R, marketing, promotion and publicity.
