Pop focus: Pirates of the Caribbean in Disneyland
Let's not fool ourselves: There is no attraction in the Magic Kingdom cooler than the Pirates of the Caribbean.
Imagineers can try all they like to spruce up old attractions or create new ones using the latest technology, but they can't top this sucker.
From the moment you step into your raft, you're immersed in a different, more romantic and adventurous world.
Drifting through a quiet, darkened grotto, you brace yourself for what's coming - a sudden plunge and splash into a hidden harbor full of rogues and scallywags, flying cannonballs and pirate song.
I've made the voyage several times over the years: Once as a child in the 1970s and a few times since. Each time through is vivid and memorable.
Below are images from the attraction -- first opened in Disneyland in 1967 and the last attraction overseen by Walt D, himself -- along with other memorabilia.
Enjoy! It's a pirate's life for me...
