Pop culture roundup: Twin Peaks; cartoonists who changed the world; Dylan's lyrics; Superman

Yeah, "Twin Peaks" is coming up. With that in mind, it's worth reading this fascinating re-review of the "Peaks" prequel film, the darkly troubling and ultimately dissatisfying "Fire Walk with Me." (I'm still excited about the new "Twin Peaks," though).

Read about 16 cartoonists who changed a world (from an upcoming book on the same topic).

The New York Times has details on a new collection of Bob Dylan's lyrics.
The book is not simply an update of the previous compilation, “Lyrics: 1962-2001.” Christopher Ricks, a British literary scholar on the faculty of Boston University (and the author of the 2003 analytical overview, “Dylan’s Visions of Sin”), edited the lyrics and wrote a lengthy, philosophical introduction, with the sisters Lisa and Julie Nemrow as co-editors.

The songs are presented chronologically, including alternative versions released as part of Mr. Dylan’s archival “Bootleg Series.” The album covers, front and back, are reproduced.

The way the songs are laid out is meant “to help the eye see what the ear hears,” Mr. Ricks said. “If you print the songs flush left,” he added, “it doesn’t represent, visually, the audible experience.” So refrains, choruses and bridges are indented. And where Mr. Dylan intended a line, however long, to be unbroken, it sprawls across the 13-inch-wide page.

The big news in comics creators' right last week was Marvel Comics' settling with the Jack Kirby Estate. Though details are scant, the upshot is Marvel paid a lot of money to Kirby's out of fear that - if a case went to the Supreme Court - the Kirby's might have a claim to at least some of the rights to the many characters Kirby created for the company over the years.

This week, lost in the shuffle, is the news that things didn't go nearly as well for the estate of Superman co-creator Joe Shuster vs. DC Comics. The Supreme Court opted not to hear the case. The upshot of this one is that, because Shuster made a deal with DC back in the 1970s not to pursue legal rights to Superman, the company would pay him, and his survivors a year pension of $25,000. Some of Shuster's family have since continued to go after DC, but the 1970s deal likely hurt their chances.

There's a good overview of the case here.

Corto Maltese: Under the Sign of Capricorn
Hugo Pratt (w & a & c)
This book, the first of 12 volumes, launches the definitive English language edition of Hugo Pratt's masterpiece, presented in the original oversized B&W format with new translations made from Pratt's original Italian scripts. Long before the term "graphic novel" entered the popular lexicon--ten years before Will Eisner's A Contract with God--Hugo Pratt pioneered the long-form "drawn literature" story. Corto Maltese set the standard for all adult adventure comics in Europe. By the mid-1970s Corto was the continent's most popular series and Hugo Pratt the world's leading graphic novelist. Hugo Pratt's peripatetic sailor was featured in a series of 29 stories. The adventures of this modern Ulysses are set during the first 30 years of the 20th Century in such exotic locales as Pratt's native Venice, the steppes of Manchuria, the Caribbean islands, the Danakil deserts, the Amazon forests, and the waves of the Pacific. Corto Maltese: Under the Sign of Capricorn collects the first six inter-connected short stories Pratt created in France in the early 1970s: "The Secret of Tristan Bantam," "Rendez-vous in Bahia," "Sureshot Samba," "The Brazilian Eagle," "So Much for Gentlemen of Fortune," and "The Seagull's Fault."

Ripley's Believe it or Not! Daily Cartoons 1929-30
Odditoriums are among the most popular attractions worldwide, yet most people don't know that it all started with a daily cartoon drawn by one man - Robert Ripley. Originally a sports cartoonist, Ripley developed Believe It or Not! in the 1920s. By the end of the decade, the series had become a phenomenal hit. In an era when few people traveled outside their own home town, let alone out of the country, Ripley became a globetrotter, seeking stories of bizarre and unusual proportion to put in his internationally-known feature. The cartoons were adapted into radio and television programs, and helped make Ripley the highest paid cartoonist in the world. This series begins a chronological reprinting of Ripley's famous daily cartoons in hardcover collections, reminding us that first and foremost Robert Ripley - explorer, radio, movie, and television personality, entrepreneur and museum impresario - was an astounding artist-cartoonist. The first volume reprises cartoons from 1929 and 1930, when Ripley's fame raised him from relative obscurity to international celebrity, and includes bonus and background material from Ripley's impressive archives.

Wonder Woman: The Complete Newspaper Comics
Just a few years after she burst into comic books, the world's most famous female superhero starred in her own daily newspaper strip written and drawn by the same creative team that produced the comic book: William Moulton Marston and Harry G. Peters. The strip lasted a little more than a year and a half - from May 1, 1944 until December 1, 1945 - and is reprinted here for the first time. It all starts on Paradise Island where Amazonian women rule supreme and no men are allowed. Led by Princess Diana, their way of life is about to change when when Steve Trevor, a wounded American soldier, washes up on their shores. Soon, Diana - rechristened Wonder Woman - is off to America, where the saga continues!

A prequel to Battling BoyThe Rise of Aurora West follows the young hero as she seeks to uncover the mystery of her mother's death, and to find her place in a world overrun with supernatural monsters and all-too-human corruption. With a taut, fast-paced script from Paul Pope and JT Petty and gorgeous, kinetic art from David Rubin, The Rise of Aurora West (the first of two volumes) is a tour de force in comics storytelling.

The second volume of a glorious two-volume, four-color graphic novel adaptation of Neil Gaiman's #1 New York Times bestselling and Newbery and Carnegie Medal-winning novel The Graveyard Book, adapted by P. Craig Russell and illustrated by an extraordinary team of renowned artists. Inventive, chilling, and filled with wonder, Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Bookreaches new heights in this stunning adaptation. Artists Kevin Nowlan, P. Craig Russell, Galen Showman, Scott Hampton, and David Lafuente lend their own signature styles to create an imaginatively diverse and yet cohesive interpretation of Neil Gaiman's luminous novel. Volume Two includes chapter six to the end of the book.

Twin Peaks back for limited Showtime run - teaser video

Nine new episodes of "Twin Peaks," created more than 20 years after the show's cancellation, are set to air on Showtime in 2016, reports Deadline.

The original show's creators Mark Frost and David Lynch will write the limited series.
The new Twin Peaks will be set in the present day, more than two decades after the events in the first two seasons. It will continue the lore and story of the original series, with Lynch and Frost committed to providing long-awaited answers and, hopefully, a satisfying conclusion to the series.
It is unclear which actors from the original series will be featured in the followup. I hear that star Kyle MacLachlan will be back, reprising his role as FBI Agent Dale Cooper who was at the center of the show.
The ABC series also featured some of Lynch’s favorite character actors, and it is likely that at least some of them will return. Leading to the 2016 debut of the Twin Peaks limited series, Showtime will re-air the first two seasons of the series, owned by parent CBS Corp.
Meanwhile, Showtime says:
The groundbreaking television phenomenon, Golden Globe® and Peabody Award-winner TWIN PEAKS will return as a new limited series on SHOWTIME in 2016. Series creators and executive producers David Lynch and Mark Frost will write and produce all nine episodes of the limited series, and Lynch will direct every episode. Set in the present day, TWIN PEAKS will continue the lore of the original series, providing long-awaited answers and a satisfying conclusion for the series’ passionate fan base.

Check out ZBS Media's new audio drama: "The Night Has Begun"

ZBS Media and scripter/producer Meatball Fulton have produced a new audio series and are airing free episodes each Monday and Friday through Halloween on their website. Hear the first ep here.

If you haven't entered Fulton's funny/mystical/adventurous world before, you should get a kick out of it. I grew up hearing his fabulous Jack Flanders adventures on my local college radio station and enthusiastically recommend them to anyone who loves cool things.

Background info:
The spark that ignited The Night happened when Mr. Fulton was trekking through the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan and wandered into a room filled with carved wooden sculptures, masks, shields, totem poles, and a gigantic elaborately carved dugout canoe the size of a fallen tree.  When he saw this, he stopped in his tracks.  We’ve all seen primitive art, but these things were alive.

The Headhunters
It turned out to be the works of the Asmat headhunters of Irian Jaya, Indonesia.  Meatball began to wonder, “Why do I feel these things are breathing?”  When he began his research, he discovered that the carvers believe the spirits of their ancestors still live within the sculptures.  In fact, it’s the ancestor’s spirits that inspire their art and guide their hand.

The Story
And so Meatball began to wonder, is it possible to tap this energy he‘s feeling?  The Asmat, besides being headhunters, are also known for their curses.  Someone has done them wrong, then there’s nothing like a good curse to make things right, to restore the balance in their universe.
