Lost: What we STILL don't know.

Episode summary:

We're looking through an underwater probe camera scanning the ocean floor. Suddenly we see wreckage. An off-screen commentator--whoever it is operating the camera--is shocked to discover it's the wreckage of Oceanic Flight 815.

In a flashback, we see a man watching news coverage of this event. It's been confirmed that everyone aboard the flight perished. This man, though he apparently has no connection to the flight, is inexplicably overcome with emotion.

This man is Daniel Faraday, who we see meeting Kate and Jack after he's parachuted onto the island from a crashing helicopter carrying three other people.

These newcomers are also introduced via flashback. Miles Strom is a psychic of some sort, who is seen in flashback helping a woman rid her home of a ghost.

Charlotte Staples Lewis is an archaeologist, shown in flashback discovering the skeleton of a polar bear. In the deserts of Tunisia. With the remnants of a Dharma Initiative collar around his neck.

And Frank Lapidus is a pilot. In flashback, we see him also watching news coverage of the Oceanic wreckage discovery, but he calls the airline angrily saying that the pilot has been misidentified--the body they claim is the pilot's couldn't be, because that man always wore a wedding ring. Frank knows this because he's known the man for years. Also--Frank was supposed to be the pilot for that doomed flight.

In island time, we see that each of these visitors has come to the island expecting a fight. They came packing guns, gas masks and wearing bullet-proof vests. They realize the first member of their party to reach the island, Naomi, has been killed by Locke.

Jack's group of survivors eventually disarm and take control over Miles, Daniel and Frank, but Charlotte has been discovered by Locke's group.

Locke makes it clear to her that he knows she and her group are a danger--they haven't come to help, but are there for a darker purpose. He takes her prisoner as his group hikes to the Others' barracks.

Back with Jack, we learn Frank managed to land the helicopter, which lost control for some reason as it approached the island. It looks intact, meaning possible rescue for the survivors. But that's not why it's there. Miles says the real reason they've come is to get someone: Ben.

Back with Locke's group, Ben seizes Locke's gun and tried to kill Charlotte, but she is saved by her vest. Angry, Locke is about to shoot Ben when Ben reveals a litany of private information about Charlotte. Her profession, education, birth place and date, etc. He says Charlotte and the rest have come for him, and if they get him that means trouble for everyone.

When Locke asks Ben how he knows all this, Ben says he has a spy on Charlotte's boat.

Also in flashback, we see Matthew Abaddon--the man we previously saw visiting Hurley in the mental war. Abaddon had told Hurley he was an attorney for Oceanic, but here we see him meeting with Naomi, showing her pictures and files on Daniel, Miles and Frank and talking about how Naomi will lead them to the island. When she mentions the possible of encountering Oceanic crash survivors, he won't listen, steering her back to the cover story: "There ARE NO survivors."

Questions/clues/observations:

* Seems like Abaddon may be with the Dharma Initiative and he sent Naomi's team in to reclaim the island. It also seems likely that he, and whoever he represents, faked the Oceanic wreckage in order to keep the island secret from the rest of the world.

* Was the whole thing about Naomi carrying a picture of Desmond and Penny a ruse to keep the team's real mission secret from the survivors? Who did Abaddon and the rest know about Desmond? Did Kelvin, the Hatch man, inform them about him?

* The team members each of have key talents that seem meant to help them on the island: A psychic to deal with all the supernatural freakiness, a physicist to deal with all the scientific freakiness, an archaeologist to... I'm not sure what she's for yet, and a pilot to get them there and back again.

* How did Abaddon recruit his team? Frank has a close connection to the Oceanic Flight, what with his having supposed to have flown it. Daniel has some sort of emotional connection to it. Charlotte is seen looking at a newspaper story about the crash recovery and not believing it to be true. And she found that Dharma bear collar. We don't see any such connection with Miles.

* Is Ben's spy Michael?

* Hurley spills the beans that he saw Jacob's cabin. Both Ben and Locke are shocked to learn this.

* In the previous episode, where Abaddon visits Hurley, he asks "are they still alive?" Is Abaddon talking about his team? Other crash survivors? Both?

* Charlotte's initials are interesting: C.S. Lewis, author of the Narnia books. In one of these, "The Lion, the Witch and Wardrobe," four children go to mystical Narnia via a magic wardrobe and spend years there. When they return, no time has passed. This lends itself to theories that something weird is up time-wise with the island.

* According to Ben, Charlotte was born in Essex, England. In flashback, Daniel is shown in Essex, Mass.

* Daniel shares a last name with real-life physicist Michael Faraday, who was a pioneer in the fields of electromagnetism and electrochemistry. More on him here.

* Daniel remarks to Kate that there's something odd about the way sunlight hits the island. It doesn't "scatter" quite right.

* What's up with that polar bear in Tunisia? Was Charlotte part of Dharma when she found it, or was she snooping into what Dharma is all about?

* Locke reveals to his group that he saw a vision of Walt, and showed him that he really had been shot by Ben, but was walking around feeling fine anyway. Despite how crazy he sounds, they seem to believe Locke is for real. Will following him turn out to be a good idea?

* The ship that sent down the probe that found the alleged Oceanic wreckage was named The Christiane, which is reminding lots of folks of Christian, Jack and Claire's dad.

* According to this ABC-posted online story, the The Christiane was actually looking for The Black Rock (the ancient wreck found in the middle of the island's jungle a couple seasons back) but found the downed plane instead.

* Are the newcomers an homage to the Fantastic Four? You've got a brainy guy (Daniel), a grouchy pilot (Frank), a young hothead (Miles, whose last name "Strom," could refer to Human Torch Johnny Storm) and... I'm not sure how Charlotte parallels Invisible Woman Susan Storm.

* When Locke asks Ben what the smoke monster is Ben say he doesn't know. So, is it something Jacob controls? Or something else?

* The Oceanic phone number shown for family members of survivors to call works in real life. Call 1-888-548-0034 and you'll get a message saying the investigation into the crash is still ongoing and more information will be provided as available. I don't know if the messages will be updated as time goes by.

Lost: What we STILL don't know

Episode summary:

We see a 1970s Camaro leading a high-speed police chase through Los Angeles. The car crashes and the driver emerges as the cops train their weapons on him. It's Hurley. This isn't a flashback. At least not like one before. It takes place after Hurley has left the island.

We learn Hurley is one of the "Oceanic 6," and has attained celebrity status as a result of having survived the plane crash. We also learn he's very troubled. He's haunted by visions of Charlie's death and the island experience in general. He's also carrying tremendous guilt over having left the island and, presumably, other people who are still on it.

After his arrest, Hurley is committed to a mental hospital where he's visited by Jack, another of the Oceanic 6. Jack is worried that Hurley is going to tell the truth about the island and the Oceanic 6's return to civilization--we don't know how/what occurred. Hurley says the island wants them to return. Jack doesn't want to hear about it.

Hurley also is visited by the ghost(?) of Charlie, who makes him feel guilty for having left the island, and those apparently still on it, behind.

A man visits Hurley in the hospital (he may have been a vision, not real) saying he's an attorney from Oceanic Airlines. Before he leaves, the man says "they're alive, aren't they." Hurley freaks out, yelling for a nurse.

Back in time, on the island, we see Jack and the other survivors excited about the prospect of rescue. They're used Naomi's satellite phone to make contact with her ship and it sounds as if people are coming to retrieve them soon.

Ben, now captive to the crash survivors, insists Naomi's people won't help. They'll harm those on the island.

Back at the beach, Desmond emerges from the waves and brings pretty much the same message. Charlie died shutting down the jamming signal in the underwater Looking Glass station. But before drowning, signaled to Desmond that Naomi and her crew were not sent by Desmond's girlfriend Penelope. We don't know who they are.

Naomi dies as a result of Locke's stab wound, but she covers for the survivors when talking to her crew on the satellite phone, saying that she'd been injured by a tree branch in her parachute fall.

We also see Hurley, temporarily separated from the rest of the survivors in the jungle, encountering Jacob's creepy cabin--and Locke.

Torn about whether to stay and await potential rescue or hunker down in the Others' barracks and defend themselves against these alleged invaders, the survivors break into two groups.

Jack leads those awaiting rescue. Locke leads those who are afraid.

Questions/clues/observations:

* Who are the rest of the Oceanic 6? Are we counting Kate? We know she also returned to civilization. But has she attained the same notoriety? After all, she's a fugitive and likely would've been tossed in prison upon return. Perhaps the rest are keeping her return secret. Or she's assumed another name, leaving the world to believe the "real" Kate died in the crash. Are we counting Michael and Walt? We were led to believe at the end of the last season that maybe Sawyer made it back too. Maybe he's one of the six. And then there was the mysterious person in the coffin. This will take some time to figure out.

* Why did only six of the survivors return? Are the rest dead? Still on the island?

* Why are Hurley and Jack so guilt-ridden? What happened to allow their return?

* How the heck did these folks get back? Boat? Plane? Inter-dimensional travel?

* Who are Naomi's people? Are they associated somehow with Penelope's father? Is the Widmore company somehow a rival to Dharma and/or the Others? Do they have dark plans for the island?

* There's speculation that Jacob is Jack's dad, Christian. And, y'know, in profile, in the dark, he kinda looks like he could be. Maybe Jacob took the shape of Christian. Or Christian popped by Jacob's place for a visit. Who knows.

* Was that Locke's eye that popped up in the window of Jacob's cabin and scared the bejeezus out of Hurley? Is it Patchy the Russian? Or is it Jacob himself peering out?

* Character connections: The cop who questions Hurley states he was Ana Lucia's former partner. He's under the impression Ana Lucia died in the Oceanic crash but wonders if Hurley met her before the plane went down. Hurley lies, saying he didn't know Ana Lucia.

* Drawings on the chalkboard in the sitting room of the mental hospital show a shark and waves, etc. They seem inspired by the island and look a bit like those seen in the Hatch during season 2.

* Hurley is seen doing a watercolor showing an Eskimo and igloo.

* In the vision Hurley has of Charlie while in the police station, Charlie has "they need you" written on his palm.

* Before she dies, Naomi tells her crew mate over the satellite phone to tell her sister she's sorry. Who is her sister? Or is she sending the crew a coded message?

"Lost" begins its fourth season Jan. 31 on ABC. But what the heck is going on? It's been nine months since the last new episode!

To help you get ready, here's a thorough review of the key happenings of season 3, plus a current list of unanswered questions about the show:

Key events:

* We see that the Others live in a sophisticated village--with houses, power, running water, even book clubs--on the island and they were seemingly caught unawares by the Oceanic plane crash.

* Benjamin Linus (first introduced to the crash survivors as "Henry Gale") leads the Others and instructs Goodwin and Ethan Rom to pose as passengers and spy on the crash survivors. He tells them to prepare "lists" of "good people" among the passengers.

* Henry has kidnapped Kate, Sawyer and Jack to play them off one another and to break them down mentally so he can convince Jack to operate on a cancerous tumor growing on his (Ben's) spine.

* The polar bears spotted by the survivors were evidently part of a Dharma Initiative project and were kept in the cages where the Others put Kate and Sawyer.

* The Others had been in contact with the outside world via electronic communications and, evidently, a submarine that allowed them to come and go at will. However, the electromagnetic disturbance caused by the Hatch ex/implosion in season two has apparently disrupted communications with civilization. And--wanting to keep the island shut off from the outside--Locke blows up the submarine.

* The Hatch explosion apparently provided Desmond with the ability to see briefly into the future during psychic "flashes."

* The Others recruited Juliet, a fertility expert, to come to the island because all the women who have become pregnant there die, as do their babies. Juliet has been unable to find a solution to this problem.

* After his spinal surgery, Ben promises to let Jack and Juliet leave the island. But, as they are about to board the sub, Locke blows it up. Later, Juliet acts as if she's been cast out by the Others and joins the crash survivors in their camp. However, she's really spying on them and providing information to Ben.

* Sun is pregnant by Jin.

* The island appears to have some sort of healing ability. Locke is able to walk again after crashing there. Jin, who was infertile, is able to father a child. Ben and Juliet make references to there being no cancer among the inhabitants. However, Ben develops cancer and it doesn't go away on its own.

* The Other Alex refers to Ben as her father. However, she is also evidently the daughter for Danielle Rousseau, the French woman who is a survivor of some sort of research party unrelated to the Others or the Dharma Initiative.

* The Dharma people refer to the Others as "hostiles." Ben calls these hostiles the "original inhabitants" of the island.

* When Alex's boyfriend Carl shows rebellious tendencies, he's taken to a room and subjected to brainwashing techniques that refer to Jacob--an entity the Others seem to worship, or at least hold in very high regard.

* Jacob seems to be some sort of mystical entity--maybe a ghost. Ben can see and communicate with him and apparently delivers Jacob's orders to the Others. Locke doesn't see Jacob, but can evidently hear him.

* The Others seem fascinated by Locke, and Ben seems threatened by him. After Locke "hears" Jacob, Ben shoots Locke, who is wounded but somehow survives.

* Mr. Eko is killed by the mysterious smoke monster after it apparently scans his mind, learning about his past and making judgments about who Eko is and what he's done.

* Cindy the stewardess and two child survivors from the plane's tail section are living happily with the Others, it seems.

* In flashbacks, we see how a young Ben and his father arrive on the island as part of the Dharma Initiative. Ben eventually encounters the Other Richard Alpert in the jungle. Ben has seen visions of his dead mother in the jungle. Alpert is curious about Ben's apparent psychic ability. Years later, Ben helps plan and participates in a gas attack that kills all the Dharma people, including Ben's father.

* Claire attaches a message to the leg of a migratory bird that stops on the island.

* Somehow, the Others brought Locke's father, "Anthony Cooper," to the island and have been holding him captive. Cooper is later killed by Sawyer.

* The crash survivors Nikki and Paulo are paralyzed by spider bites and buried alive by Sawyer and Hurley, who believe the couple is dead.

* A woman named Naomi parachutes on the island after her helicopter crashes. She's apparently been sent by Desmond's girlfriend Penelope Widmore and the rest of her crew is on a ship near the island but, for some reason, haven't been able to locate it.

* Naomi has a satellite phone, but Sayid is unable to get a signal with it so he can communicate to Naomi's crew.

* Juliet evidently turns against Ben and tells Jack what she's been up to. She also tells the crash survivors an underwater Dharma station, called the Looking Glass, is running a jamming signal that prevents those on the island from communicating with the outside world by radio or satellite. Charlie swims down to the Looking Glass to switch off the signal, but is captured by two armed women inside the station. There's a struggle and Charlie is able to turn off the signal, but drowns before he can escape the flooding station.

* Ben tells Jack that Naomi isn't who she says and that alerting her crew will bring dangerous people to the island who will kill everyone. But Jack makes the call.

* We see a future vision of Jack and Kate. They are off the island, but Jack thinks it's a mistake that they escaped. Something terrible happened to make it possible. He tells Kate they need to go back.

Character connections:

* Christian Shepherd is the father of both Jack and Claire, although they don't realize this.

* Locke's dad is the same guy who conned and destroyed Sawyer's family.

* Kate befriends Cassidy Phillips, the woman Sawyer conned and got pregnant. Kate isn't aware of the Cassidy-Sawyer connection, though.

* The monk who leads the order Desmond joins has a picture on his desk of the jewelry shop clerk that Desmond encounters in London.

* Charlie rescues Sayid's girlfriend Nadia from a mugging in London.

People killed:

* The Other Colleen is killed by Sun.

* The man Sun has an affair with is killed.

* Mr. Eko is killed by the smoke monster.

* The Other Ms. Klugh is killed by her fellow Other Mikhail.

* Locke's father "Anthony Cooper," the con man who destroyed Sawyer's family is killed by Sawyer.

* Nikki and Paulo are paralyzed by spider bites and inadvertently buried alive by Sawyer and Hurley.

* Tom/Mr. Friendly and a whole bunch of his fellow Others are killed by the crash survivors in the season ender.

Featured music:

* "Downtown" by Petula Clark.

* Charlie is seen singing "Wonderwall" by Oasis on a London street.

* Three Dog Night's "Shambala" plays on the stereo in the Dharma bus Hurley locates. It's playing again in Ben's flashback scenes featuring the same bus, which was driven by Ben's father.

Featured books:

* The Others' book group is reading "Carrie" by Stephen King.

* A guard outside the Others' brainwashing facility is reading Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time."

* A copy, in Portuguese, of Joseph Heller's "Catch 22" is in a backpack apparently belonging to Naomi.

Unanswered questions:

* What is the history of the Others? Where did they come from?

* What is the back story of Danielle, the French woman? How did she arrive on the island? Does she have any ties to Dharma? Why was her daughter, Alex, abducted?

* Why are the Others interested in some of the crash survivors and not the rest? They define themselves as "good." What's their definition of the word?

* What was Ben's breakfast on the beach with Kate all about? What was he hoping to get from her?

* Why did the smoke monster kill Mr. Eko?

* What's up with the sickness that supposedly killed off Danielle's team?

* What is the history of "Adam and Eve," the skeletal remains the crash survivors discovered in season one?

* What exactly was the purpose of the Hatch and what occurred when it ex/imploded?

* What is the smoke monster that has killed several people? What is its purpose and is it controlled by anyone?

* What's become of Walt and Michael who left the island on a boat at the end of season 2?

* What really brought the various people to island? What's behind the web of connections among them all?

* Is the Dharma Initiative still active at all? If not, why is someone from the outside making airdrops of supplies and food to the island?

* How did the Others get information about the plane crash survivors, including their real names? How are they in contact with the outside world?

* Why do women on the island die instead of giving birth?

* What's behind the apparent healing properties of the island?

* What's responsible for the visions of animals and dead people the crash survivors sometimes see on the island?

* What's behind Locke's ability to walk again and Desmond's ability to see future events?

* What's the deal with Libby, killed in season 2, who evidently gave Desmond the sailboat that landed him on the island and who once was in a mental ward with Hurley?

* What's up with the giant, four-toed statue Sayid, Sun and Jin see at the end of season 2?

* Any explanation for why the man in the Dharma Initiative videos is at different times identified as Dr. Marvin Candle and Dr. Mark Wickmund or why the CIA agent who identifies himself as Joe Inman to Sayid tells Desmond his name is Kelvin Inman?

* Why did the psychic in Australia encourage Claire to take the doomed flight?

* Who is the man Sarah left Jack for? Why is she so reluctant to reveal his identity? Is he somehow associated with the Dharma Initiative and/or the Others?

* Who--or what--is "Jacob"?

* What's motivating the Others? Spiritual beliefs? Fear? What's their community all about?

* Who is the person who has died in the "flash forward" featuring the off-island Jack and Kate. They refer to him, but not by name.

* Who was Naomi working for? Penelope's dad, Mr. Widmore, perhaps? Does he have an interest in the island and somehow know Desmond ended up there?

* What's the relationship between Ben's people and Naomi's?

* Are Naomi's people in the Dharma Initiative or related to it? Did Ben have a real reason for killing off the Dharma crew? What were they up to that he saw as a threat? What is he protecting the island from and why do other people want the island?

* What's going to happen when Naomi's people show up? Is Ben telling the truth when he says they are dangerous?

* Juliet tells Sawyer that the Others are building a runway. What for? Why are they building it on the smaller island, not the main one?

* What is the mistake Jack feels he made? Does he really intend to go back to the island?

* In the flash forward, Jack refers to his dad as if he's still alive? Is he?

But they discovered that the island holds many secrets, including a mysterious smoke monster, polar bears, housing and hatches with electricity and hot & cold running water, a group of island residents known as "The Others" and a mysterious man named Jacob. The survivors have also found signs of those who came to the island before them, including a 19th century sailing ship called The Black Rock, the remains of an ancient statue, as well as bunkers belonging to the Dharma Initiative -- a group of scientific researchers who inhabited the island in the recent past.

In the season premiere episode, "The Beginning of the End," feeling that their rescue is close at hand, the survivors don't know whether to believe Charlie's final message that the people claiming to liberate them are not who they seem to be.

The band of friends, family, enemies and strangers must continue to work together against the cruel weather and harsh terrain if they want to stay alive. Lost clues: "Through the Looking Glass" ep. 22, season 3

Synopsis:

We see a bearded Jack, very drunk and messed up, flying on a passenger plane. He spots an article or obituary in a newspaper and becomes very upset.

Later, we see him driving on a bridge in Los Angeles, calling somebody on a cell phone, still very upset. He leaves a jumbled message on an answering machine, then pulls over. He climbs up on the bridge railing and is about to jump off when a car approaching in the other direction crashes. He jumps down and rushes to the accident.

Later, we learn Jack has rescued a woman and her son from the car and he's viewed as a hero. But we know he was the cause of the crash. The woman saw him about the jump, got distracted and lost control of her car.

Throughout these scenes, Jack is very messed up on alcohol and prescription drugs. We see him go a funeral home to view the casket of the person in the article/obit, but the casket is closed and Jack tells the funeral director he doesn't want to see the body.

Meanwhile, in the present time, Jack leads the plane crash survivors to the radio tower, where they hope to make contact with Naomi's crew on the satellite phone once Charlie turns off the jamming signal in the underwater Looking Glass station.

Charlie, however, has been captured by two Others in the station, Bonnie and Greta. They've contacted Ben, who has sent Mikhail to the station to handle the situation. Desmond, meanwhile, is knocked out in an outrigger canoe up above the Looking Glass.

Sayid, Bernard and Jin are on the beach and, when the Others arrive, set off the expolosives in the tents, killing several of the Others. However, Jin misses his target when trying to set off his batch of the dynamite and some of the Others survive, capturing Sayid, Bernard and Jin.

We also see Locke, left for dead in the ditch after being shot by Ben. He looks like a goner but then a vision of Walt shows up and tells him to get up, he has things to do.

On the way to the tower, Jack and the rest realize the ambush has gone wrong, they don't see the third batch of dynamite blow. Sawyer and Juliet turn back, heading back to the beach to help Sayid, Bernard and Jin.

Meanwhile, Ben--taking Alex with him--is off to intercept Jack and party at the radio tower, which he does. He tells Jack this is a mistake. Naomi isn't who she says--she'll bring people to the island who have been looking for it for a long time and they'll kill everyone. Jack doesn't believe him. Ben gets on his walkie and orders Sayid, Bernard and Jin killed and Jack believes all three are shot dead. He beats Ben up and takes him captive.

On the beach, Sawyer and Juliet--with Hurley, who has arrived like the calvary driving the Dharma bus--rescue the three captives.

Back in the water, Desmond revives and dives off the canoe and swims into the Looking Glass when Mikhail starts shooting at him. Down below there's an altercation and Bonnie, Greta are killed while Mikhail is wounded and goes missing. Charlie turns off the jamming signal and immediately intercepts a TV message from Penelope Widmore, who is confused by the mention of Naomi. Penelope didn't send her. Outside his underwater window, Charlie spots Mikhail, who has a grenade and pulls the pin, shattering the glass and flooding the room. Charlie bolts the door and drowns but not before alerting Desmond that Naomi isn't who she says.

At the radio tower, Naomi makes contact with her people but is killed by an amazingly revived Locke who tells Jack not to make the call. But Jack does and it sounds as if help is on the way.

The episode ends back with messed up Jack. He's distraught in his home and makes a call, telling someone to meet him at the airport. Later he's there and a car arrives, it's Kate. What we took as a flashback was actaully a flash forward. They got off the island, but Jack seems to think they made a mistake. He shows Kate the clipping, but neither says who it refers to. Jack says they need to go back, but Kate looks troubled and doesn't say much. She leaves and the episode ends with him standing alone.

Clues and observations:

* Who's in the coffin?!! Here's a view of the clipping. And here's some speculation. The gist is it's somebody we haven't met yet.

* Who was Naomi working for? Penelope's dad, Mr. Widmore, perhaps? Does he have an interest in the island and somehow know Desmond ended up there?

* What's the relationship between Ben's people and Naomi's?

* Are Naomi's people in the Dharma Initiative or related to it? Did Ben have a real reason for killing off the Dharma crew? What were they up to that he saw as a threat? What is he protecting the island from and why do other people want the island?

* What's going to happen when Naomi's people show up? Is Ben telling the truth?

* Juliet tells Sawyer the Others are building a runway. What for?

* What is the mistake Jack feels he made? Does he really intend to go back to the island?

* In the flash forward, Jack refers to his dad as if he's still alive? Is he? Or is Jack just really messed up?

Here's a look at developments during the show's third season.

* "Downtown" by Petula Clark.

* Who--or what--is "Jacob"?

* What's the relationship between Ben's people and Naomi's?

Is he?

Lost clues: "Greatest Hits" ep. 21, season 3

Synopsis:

Aware of the Others' plan to attack the beach camp, the crash survivors plan a counter-attack: They rig dynamite from the Black Rock ship to their tents, which will explode when the Others arrive.

At the same time, Sayid says he's trying to use Naomi's satellite phone to contact the rest of her crew. However, he can't get a signal.

Juliet reveals the Others' have been jamming all radio signals from the island. They're doing this with a counter signal broadcasted by a Dharma station called the Looking Glass, which is underwater off the coast of the island.

Desmond has a vision of Charlie flipping a switch, which somehow leads to the rescue of the crash survivors. The bad thing is, Desmond also sees Charlie drowning after he flips this switch.

Putting two and two together, Charlie figures he's destined to swim down to the Looking Glass and turn off the jamming signal, even if he dies in the process.

As Sayid, Jin and Bernard (man, haven't seen him in a while) stay behind to set off the explosives trap, Jack leads the other survivors away from the camp to, hopefully, await rescue.

Charlie and Desmond, meanwhile, paddle an outrigger canoe out to the site of the Looking Glass.

Desmond volunteers to go in Charlie's stead and is about to dive out of the canoe when Charlie knocks him unconscious with a paddle. He's determined to sacrifice himself. He dives down and gets inside the station but, it turns out, it's inhabited--two women with guns rush out toward him and he's captured.

Clues, observations, speculation:

* In season 1, Charlie tells Jack he can't swim. But apparently he can.

* Did Juliet know the Looking Glass was occupied when Charlie volunteered to swim down there? If so, she knew he was swimming into a trap. Can we really trust her? Or Jack, for that matter?

* Who are the women in the Looking Glass? Are they Others or remnants of the Dharma Initiative? They're dressed more like Others and it makes sense they would be since it sounded as if it was Ben's idea to run a jamming signal. Dharma folks would likely want the ability to communicate with the outside. Are they trapped down there because Locke blew up the Dharma sub?

* Or could the women be members of Naomi's rescue team?

* Any reason both are women?

* This woman looks like a bit like Cassidy, the mother of Sawyer's baby--the lady he conned.

* If the Others are in control of the Looking Glass, this means they must have staged a separate attack against Dharma to secure control of it, since the gas they released on the island wouldn't have harmed anyone underwater. Or, perhaps, the Looking Glass crew members were on the island at the time of the gas attack and were killed then.

* In the flashback, the woman Charlie saves from mugging is Sayid's girlfriend, Nadia. Is there a deeper story to the mugging--was it a simple purse-snatching or was the man trying to get something important from Nadia? Or was the whole thing set up to test Charlie?

* Will Charlie survive?

* What about Locke? Alive or dead? Will we see him again soon? I'm guessing he'll show up, in some form, right around cliffhanger time in next week's season ender.

* Richard Alpert starts to ask Ben if Locke saw Jacob, but it is cut off by Ben. People in the Others' camp are curious as to what happened to Locke. Will Ben maintain control over them?

* In Charlie's childhood flashback you can hear someone say "Desmond come here..." right before young Charlie jumps into the swimming pool.

* Did Alex kill Ben's bunny? The white rabbit is certainly an Alice in Wonderland, "Through the Looking Glass" reference.
