Beatles' Help! coming to DVD

A remastered, two-disk edition of the Beatles' second feature will be out Oct. 30.

There will be 2 editions of the DVD - a standard digipack and a deluxe boxed set that will contain a reproduction of Richard Lester's original annotated script, 8 lobby cards and a poster, plus a 60-page book with rarely seen photographs and production notes from the movie.

Both the deluxe book and the standard booklet feature an introduction by Richard Lester and an appreciation by Martin Scorsese.

The DVD will be a 2-disc set. Disc 1 will feature the original film digitally restored with a newly created 5.1 soundtrack, while Disc 2 contains an hour of extra features, including:

* The Beatles in Help! - 30 minute documentary about the making of the film with Richard Lester, the cast and crew. Includes exclusive behind the scenes footage of The Beatles on set.
* A Missing Scene - interview and photographs, featuring Wendy Richard
* The Restoration of Help! - an in depth look at the restoration process.
* Memories of Help! - the cast and crew reminisce
* Theatrical Trailers - 2 US trailers and 1 Spanish trailer.
* 1965 US Radio Spots - hidden in disc menus.

Doctor Who taking a break before season 5

From the BBC:

After months of media speculation, BBC One can confirm that the Bafta-award winning Doctor Who will return for a fifth series in spring 2010.

Viewers are in for a treat this Christmas, as a special episode starring David Tennant and Kylie Minogue will be broadcast on BBC One in December 2007.

Series four, which went into production in July 2007, will hit UK screens in spring 2008 with a special episode for Christmas 2008.

In 2009, Doctor Who will return with three specials starring David Tennant, with Head Writer, Russell T Davies.

The full length fifth series will transmit in 2010.

Jane Tranter, Controller, BBC Fiction, says: "Doctor Who is one of the BBC's best loved and most successful dramas. Its journey over the past three series has been one of the most ambitious and exciting that we have had, and I'm delighted to be able to confirm not only three exciting specials for 2009, but a fifth series in 2010."

Why did DC Comics announce the postponement/cancellation of those Showcase Presents books the other day? The answer may boil down to dollars and cents, speculates Yet Another Comics Blog.

[The cancelled books] all come from a period (the late 70s through the mid-90s) when for various reasons the reprint rights aren't clear cut. My understanding is that because of the work-for-hire contracts in use at DC at the time the reprint rights must be renegotiated or else the costs of reprinting are so high as to make them unprofitable. This is why we see so few DC comics from that time frame collected; it's doable, just time consuming; and unless DC has a current good relationship with the creators it can get sticky.

Two feature-length DVDs focusing on The Who will be out Nov. 6.

"Amazing Journey: The Story of the Who,"...chronicles the history of the band through fresh interviews with surviving band members Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey, rare concert footage, artist profiles and more.

The companion film, "Amazing Journey: Six Quick Ones" features four segments on the musical abilities of band members Townshend, Daltrey, bass player John Entwistle and drummer Keith Moon. A fifth part, "Who Art You," explores the Mod culture that spawned the band's visuals, while segment six, "Who's Back," chronicles the 2003 recording of "Real Good Looking Boy," the Who's first new studio recording in more than 20 years.

Hilly Kristal, founder of New York City's famed CBGBs club has died.

Kristal founded the club in 1973 to showcase bluegrass and country acts, but it quickly became known as a breeding ground for experimental and punk music. Throughout the 1970s and '80s, the club served as a launching pad for Blondie, the Talking Heads, Television, Living Colour, Patti Smith and the Ramones, among many others.

The James Bond Ultimate Edition `Monster Box` DVD out Nov. 6 collects 21 films and extras on 42 disks.

The BBC has unearthed previously unseen Bob Dylan footage for a new 80-minute documentary.

"The Other Side of the Mirror — Dylan at Newport" is due to air on BBC 4 Oct. 14 — and will form the lynchpin of a themed night dedicated to Dylan and the Newport Folk Festival produced by award-winning arts documentary strand "Arena."

"Almost half of these Dylan performances have never been seen before," said "Arena" editor Anthony Wall.

He added: "It is fabulous, vintage Dylan collated from three Newports – '63, '64 and '65."

DC Comics announces World's Finest, Sgt. Rock and Supergirl Showcase volumes, delays others

New seasons for "The Batman" and "Legion of Super-heroes" begin Sept. 22 on Kids WB. Details:

The Batman
Four-time Emmy Award winner "The Batman" will focus its new season on the introduction of Batman's Justice League peers.

Expect amped-up action and heightened stakes as Superman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter and several others work in concert with Batman -- and even more of his amazing technological wonders -- to defend Gotham from a seemingly never-ending roster of super villains.

The usual suspects return with nefarious new schemes and more sophisticated gadgetry as the Joker, Penguin, Harley Quinn and Mr. Freeze are joined in their quest to rid Gotham of any nocturnal winged creatures by the likes of Sinestro, Scarface, Mirror Master, Metallo, Clayface and even Lex Luthor, who enlists Poison Ivy and her enchanting spores to turn Superman against Batman in the two-part season premiere.

Legion of Superheroes
The second season of "Legion of Super Heroes" finds the group fulfilling their collective destiny, each member elevating his skills to new levels ... just in time to face even greater challenges.

A incomprehensibly undefeatable nemesis -- Imperiex, the destroyer of galaxies from the rich annals of DC Comics -- puts the Legion into action alongside new team members. Superman returns from the 21st century with greater development of both his physical prowess and far better utilization of his powers to help the Legion toward victory in the 31st century and beyond.

Moreover, the Legion finds a surprising, new ally from across the space-time continuum -- a 41st century Superman, cloned from the original Superman with alien DNA added to the mix for new, enhanced powers -- to assist in its efforts to rid the universe of this powerful foe. Along the way, the LOSH -- including new members like Chameleon Boy -- provides the perfect complement of heroics and comedy to the efforts of the Supermans.

It's a funny thing about comics artist Don Heck. As this bulleting board posting demonstrates, some people who profess to hate his work later come to love it. I count myself among those who have reevaluated his output. My first exposure to his stuff came in the 70s and 80s when, admittedly, he wasn't doing his best work. But in his prime, and especially when he was inking his own pencils, he was pretty great.

I also hate to admit, at one time I wasn't a fan of comic artist Jack Kirby's work. It just seemed weird and big and blocky. I was stupid. I now count him as my all-time favorite comics artist and an American genius. The New York Times agrees.

Virgin Comics plans a new Dan Dare comics series. From the press release:

The new series will be published monthly beginning November 2007 and will be written by legendary comic author, Garth Ennis (author of Preacher, The Boys, Hitman, John Woo's Seven Brothers and other acclaimed and best-selling titles).

Dan Dare has been an icon since 1950. Elaborate stories of his space travel and galactic battles defending people of the universe captivated post- War baby boomers. Dan Dare's adventures burst to the forefront of pop culture, selling nearly 1 million copies each week in the pages of the Eagle Comic.

Virgin Comics' Dan Dare is set in the future, albeit not too many decades from the present day. Colonel Dare is still vibrant and courageous -- but now he's retired. His retirement is a self-imposed exile, the result of his disgust with politics and the post-nuclear warfare that has destroyed North America and much of Asia -- leaving the UK as the world's last remaining superpower.
