Pop links: Santa songs, happy holidays with Bing and Frank, Cohen's Hallelujah chorus, Davy Graham remembered

WFMU's Beware of the Blog asks the musical question: Is Santa Claus a hippie?

-----

Classic TV Showbiz presents "Happy Holidays with Bing and Frank" from 1957.

-----

You can rest easy: "Howard the Duck" is finally coming to DVD.

-----

What did Leonard Cohen mean when he wrote "Hallelujah," (now enjoying chart success in multiple cover versions) anyway? The BBC investigates.

...exactly how Christmassy is this song, with lines like "your faith was strong but you needed proof", where the singer is "not somebody who's seen the light"?

Well, while there's not a lot of "behold the Baby Jesus" and not a donkey in sight, there's certainly a lot of Bible in there - it's just that it's some of the raunchier and more violent episodes from the Christmas-free Old Testament.

-----

Mojo mag remembers the great British guitarist Davy Graham, who passed away yesterday.

Here's Graham in a 1959 BBC TV documentary directed by Ken Russell.

MARVEL MASTERWORKS: WARLOCK VOL. 2 HC
Written by JIM STARLIN with BILL MANTLO
Penciled by JIM STARLIN with JOHN BYRNE
Cover by JIM STARLIN
The MARVEL MASTERWORKS line is proud to present one of comics' most mind-blowingly cosmic sagas. At '70s Marvel there was no who quite mastered the startling scope and high-concept complexity of truly cosmic adventure like writer/artist and overall Renaissance man, Jim Starlin. His first effort with Captain Marvel redefined a character. His second with Adam Warlock set the tone for star-spanning spectacle that is considered a high-water mark to this day. Taking the legacy laid out by Lee, Kirby, Thomas and Kane, Jim Starlin evolved Warlock to the next level, imbuing the character with the furies and inner demons of a man-god on the brink of insanity. Forced to confront the Magus, an evil version of himself, and the nihilistic menace, Thanos, Warlock's conflicts weren't just knuckle-grinding throw-downs, they were epic, existential struggles for the very soul. Culminating in the first-ever assembling of the Infinity Gems, and featuring the first appearances of such cosmic Marvel mainstays as Gamorra and Pip the Troll--not to mention an all-out struggle to save the universe joined by the Avengers, Captain Marvel and Spider-Man--this MASTERWORKs edition is definitive Marvel. So reserve that copy today, True Believer! Collecting STRANGE TALES #178-181, WARLOCK #9-15, MARVEL TEAM-UP #55, AVENGERS ANNUAL #7 and MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE ANNUAL #2.

Another "Phantom" movie is in the works.

he latest adaptation, which is expected to cost $87 million, will focus on "the Father/Son relationship, and what it means to be The Phantom," scriptwriter Tim Boyle said in a statement. "The film will be set in the present day and will deal with the concept of destiny."

Producer Bruce Sherlock, who also served as executive producer of the first Phantom movie, said the new film will be a marked improvement over its predecessor, which received mixed reviews.

"It has the makings of a blockbuster," Sherlock told The Associated Press. "There's some surprises that will thrill the Phantom fans worldwide." Sherlock's Sydney-based Sherlock Symington Productions won the rights to the film.

The movie will likely be shot entirely in Australia, with production set to begin within six to nine months, Sherlock said. Producers are in talks with several "top talent" Australian and American actors, Sherlock said. He declined to provide names.

Iconic pin-up Bettie Page passes away

Bettie Page died at age 85 last night. The Los Angeles Times has a feature and pics.

A cult figure, Page was most famous for the estimated 20,000 4-by-5-inch black-and-white glossy photographs taken by amateur shutterbugs from 1949 to 1957. The photos showed her in high heels and bikinis or negligees, bondage apparel -- or nothing at all.

Decades later, those images inspired biographies, comic books, fan clubs, websites, commercial products -- Bettie Page playing cards, dress-up magnet sets, action figures, Zippo lighters, shot glasses -- and, in 2005, a film about her life and times, "The Notorious Bettie Page."
