The White Stripes' next album, Icky Thump, will be out later this year.

Tentative song titles include "I'm Slowly Turning Into You," "Catch Hell Blues," "Little Cream Soda" and "You Don't Know What Love Is (You Just Do What You're Told)."

The Kids WB! has a new animated Spider-Man series in the works for 2008. From the press release:

Tentatively titled “The Amazing Spider-Man,” the new series is being produced by Culver Entertainment. Greg Weisman (“Gargoyles”, “The Batman”) is supervising producer, Victor Cook (“Hellboy: Blood and Iron” and “Buzz Lightyear of Star Command”) is producer/supervising director. The series will premiere on Kids’ WB! on The CW, the No.1 rated Saturday morning kids broadcast slate.

Riding the crest of Sony’s anticipated summer blockbuster “Spider-Man 3,” the new animated series picks up the original web-slinger’s mythology at the beginning of his hero’s journey – as a not-so-typical 16-year-old entering his junior year of high school. Having spent the summer engaging common criminals with his new-found powers, Peter Parker must conceal his secret identity while engaging a new level of terror – the multi-leveled pressures of teenage life at home and school while combating bigger, badder super-villains in the real world.

“Our goal is to reinterpret these great characters and concepts for our millennium,” Weisman said. “We’ll have plenty of resonant material for the Spider-Man fan, while engaging the Spider-Man novice with the same thrills we experienced when we were first exposed to the character. Our stories will appeal on multiple levels with plenty of eye-candy, action, humor and colorful characters for the youngest demographic balanced with extensive character development for ‘tweens, teens and adults.”

Dark Horse Comics has four art books planned for the coming year: "Art of Bone" featuring the work of cartoonist Jeff Smith (June); "Art of Grendel," tracking the 25 years of Matt Wagner's character (August); "Conan: The Phenomenon," including the paperback cover art paintings by Frank Frazetta and other works (September), and "Buffy: Panel to Panel," featuring works from Dark Horse's various "Buffy" series (October).

Contrary to earlier reports, Galactus apparently is in the second Fantastic Four film, says director Tim Story.

Comics scribe Arnold Drake, co-creator of the Doom Patrol and others, is ailing.

Arnold Drake is in Cabrini Hospital in New York City with what his
daughter called "a touch of pneumonia." He was found collapsed, but
conscious on the floor of his apartment by a neighbor (thank you, Mr.
Hennessy). He is still in intensive care as of today (February 28).

Arnold has been writing comics since the late '40s. He's written humor and
adventure for all age groups from Batman to Jerry Lewis. He is the creator
of Stanley and His Monster, Deadman, Doom Patrol and Beast Boy. He also
wrote what is probably the first American graphic novel; "It Rhymes with
Lust" was published in 1950 with art by Matt Baker and is due to be
re-released by Dark Horse in a few weeks (March, 2007).

Send cards, letters and art to Arnold Drake, Cabrini Medical Center, 227 E.

Lost Clues: "Tricia Tanaka is Dead" Ep. 10, Season 3

Synopsis:

Hurley discovers a decrepit VW bus used by the Dharma Initiative (complete with dead driver inside) and recruits/demands Jin, Sawyer and Charlie to help him get it running again, insisting that the accomplishment will have postive ramifications for everyone--that doing so will somehow break the bad luck curse that's haunted him ever since he won the lotto back home.

In flashback, we see the young Hurley trying to get an old Camaro running again. His dad promises to help, but abandons the family before doing so. Also in flashback, we see Hurley's Mr. Cluck restaurant get obliterated by a meteor with TV news reporter Tricia Tanaka inside--hence the episode title.

Back in the present, Kate seeks Danielle the Frenchwoman's help in finding the Others' settlement.

Clues, observations, speculation:

* How did Roger the work man, driver of the VW, die?

* A map Sawyer spots shows the Dharmas were planning to build roads. Did they ever do it?

* Mmmm... Dharma Beer.

* The tune playing on young Hurley's stereo and on the VW stereo once it starts running is Three Dog Night's "Shambala."

Wash away my troubles, wash away my pain
With the rain in Shambala
Wash away my sorrow, wash away my shame
With the rain in Shambala

(chorus)
Ah, ooh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Everyone is helpful, everyone is kind
On the road to Shambala
Everyone is lucky, everyone is so kind
On the road to Shambala

(repeat chorus)

How does your light shine, in the halls of Shambala

I can tell my sister by the flowers in her eyes
On the road to Shambala
I can tell my brother by the flowers in his eyes
On the road to Shambala

(repeat chorus)

How does your light shine, in the halls of Shambala

* From Wikipedia: In Tibetan Buddhist tradition, Shambhala (also spelled Shambala or Shamballa) is a mystical kingdom hidden somewhere beyond the snowpeaks of the Himalayas.

...Shambhala (Tib. bde 'byung) is a Sanskrit term meaning "place of peace/tranquility/happiness".

* Charlie is seen wearing a Bob Dylan "Highway 61" T-shirt. Here are the lyrics to Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited."

* Hurley is yet another character with father issues, ala Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Locke, Sun...

* Sawyer stepped on dart. What's all that about? Just an opportunity for Kate and him to make nice, or some deeper meaning?

Papercutz is launching an updated version of EC Comics' Tales from the Crypt anthology title geared toward younger readers.

Papercutz Editor, Jim Salicrup, explained the apparent contradiction of a youth-oriented imprint publishing the very comic book series that Dr. Wertham used as example "A" to blame comics for juvenile delinquency in the 1950s as follows: "Everyone loves scary stories, especially kids, and the Tales From the Crypt style of dark humor with shock endings truly appeals to all ages, not unlike Harry Potter or Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Despite the furor over horror comics in the '50s that led to the demise of most of the EC line, people forget that those comics were created for all ages. Ironically, most of the original Crypt comics would be approved by the Comics Code today."

The first issue ships in June.

---------------------

The old Warren publishing titles Creepy and Eerie are being revived, too, but in this case as it's TV and/or film properties.

Though both Creepy and Eerie have horror and sci-fi elements, duo will likely develop Creepy as more of a horror project and Eerie as a sci-fi brand, execs said.

While a younger generation may not be aware of the brands or the comic books, Josh Braun said that auds will find much of that they like about contemporary genre films and TV embedded in these earlier properties.

DVD: Best of the Flip Wilson Show

Out Feb. 27 on three disks.

Info:

The Flip Wilson Show was an instant smash when it premiered on NBC in September 1970, becoming the highest-rated variety program on television. In a bold departure from the standard fare of the time, The Flip Wilson Show did without large production numbers, house band, regular cast, or elaborate sets. From a round stage in front of a studio audience, gifted comedian Flip Wilson entertained the country with nothing but his hilarious monologues, a stellar array of guest stars, and great sketch comedy. This first-ever collection of full-length episodes from The Flip Wilson Show features guest performances by Ray Charles, Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Albert Brooks, Redd Foxx, Joe Namath, Johnny Cash, Joan Rivers, Phyllis Diller, and many more. Flip's signature characters are here, too, from Rev. Leroy of the "Church Of What's Happenin' Now" to that sexy, sassy force of nature-the legendary Geraldine Jones. These treasured shows will have you laughing from beginning to end, but it won't be the Devil who made you do it. It'll be Flip Wilson.

Included are: "Nancy Drew, Detective"; "Nancy Drew, Reporter"; "Nancy Drew, Troubleshooter" and "Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase."

More info from Warner Home Video:

The four films in the collection follow Nancy as she seeks a missing heiress (in Nancy Drew, Detective), investigates a poisoning (Nancy Drew, Reporter), clears a family friend accused of murder (Nancy Drew, Troubleshooter) and faces death in a haunted mansion's secret tunnel (Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase).

April 2007 comics highlights

Along with the DC and Marvel solicitations for April, here are some other upcoming items that look good/interesting:

HARVEY COMICS CLASSICS VOL 1 CASPER THE FRIENDLY GHOST
Designed and edited by LESLIE CABARGA
It's amazing how many comics fans who grew up admiring Spiderman, Batman, and Nick Fury still retain warm places in their hearts for Casper the Friendly Ghost. Now Dark Horse is delighted to participate in the revival of Casper, who remains among the most beloved of cartoon and comic book icons. Casper the Friendly Ghost made his first appearance as a star of Paramount's Famous Cartoons in 1947 and entered the comics in 1949. But after five issues, publisher St. John's gave up the title. That's when Harvey Comics stepped in, and where this book begins. Harvey breathed life into Casper, and from the very first issue, the cover designs, stories, and artwork - drawn by the same animators who worked on the cartoons - were a cut above. Harvey Comics Classics Volume 1: Casper contains over 100 of Casper's very best stories, from the beginning of the Harvey series in 1952 through the classic years of the mid-1960s. The art is reproduced from crisp black-and-white printer's proofs and original artwork from the old Harvey archives, along with sixty four pages of color meticulously restored from the original comic books. The book includes a comprehensive introduction illustrated with historic memorabilia. Order for $13.57 from Amazon.

In this volume of the bestselling Complete Peanuts series, Charles Schulz introduces one (in fact, three) of the quirkiest characters to the Peanuts universe, the numerically-monikered 95472 siblings. They didn't stay around very long but offered some choice bits of satirical nonsense while they did. As it happens, this volume is particularly rich in never-before-reprinted strips: Over 150 (more than one fifth of the book!) have never seen the light of day since their original appearance over 40 years ago, so this will be a trove of undiscovered treasures even for avid Peanuts collectors. Introduction by Bill Melendez, animator of all the Peanuts TV specials starting all the way back with A Charlie Brown Christmas! Order for $19.98 from Amazon.

OUR GANG VOL 2

Spirited and engaging, Kelly's Our Gang harks back to the days before television, when kids spent most of their time playing outdoors, limited only by each other's imagination and ingenuity. This is the second in a series of books reprinting Walt Kelly's Our Gang stories. Cover by Jeff Smith (Bone). Order for $10.36 from Amazon.

The Motown label has obtained a disclaimer from producers of the "Dream Girls" flick.

The film, adapted from the hit Broadway musical of the same name, is loosely based on the story of one of Motown's greatest acts, Diana Ross and the Supremes. But the film has rankled a number of recording artists, writers and others connected with the label who felt Motown was falsely depicted in a negative light, Motown spokesman Paul Freundlich told Reuters.

Their objections led to "amicable discussions" between representatives for Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr., 77, and executives from DreamWorks and its parent studio, Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc., Freundlich said.

Lost clues "Stranger in a Strange Land" Episode 3.9

Synopsis:

In a flashback, we see Jack living on a beach in Thailand, where he carries on an affair with a woman, Achara, who evidently has the ability to mystically "read" the true character of a person and, for a living, tattoos these descriptions onto her clients.

Although Achara says it is against her custom to mystically tattoo an outsider, Jack--drunk, suspicious and jealous--forces her to do it for him. We learn his tattoo says "He walks among us but he is not one of us."

In the present time, Jack agrees to help treat infections that have resulted from Ben's surgery. In exchange, the Others agree not to execute Juliet, who they now realize, wanted Ben dead.

Sawyer and Kate arrive back on the main island and Sawyer releases the outcast Other, Karl, as they make their way back to the beach camp to rejoin their fellow plane crash survivors.

Clues, observations, speculation:

* Lots of meanings can be read into Jack's tattoo. Does it mean he's a leader? That he's not supposed to be on the island? That he was fated to end up as the prisoner of the Others?

* Or, is Jack this "Jacob" the Others refer to? Their society seems to be organized along the lines of a cult: very insular, looking at outsiders with suspicion and derision, having it's own rituals and beliefs. Maybe they'll end up thinking Jack is some sort of prophet or messiah figure.

* In Thai, Achara means "pretty angel."

* What are we supposed to make of Achara's comment that she has no interest in his father? Does it simply mean she doesn't care about his past, or does she know something about his dad?

* Karl is stumped by Sawyer's "Brady Bunch" reference. Although the Others apparently have backyards (and we've seen their suburban-style village) they don't have cable. We're led to believe, in fact, that Karl was born on the island. Ben, in an earlier episode, says he's lived on the island all his life. If Alex is his daugher, and Danielle the Crazy Frenchwoman is Alex's mother, that means Ben and Danielle got together after Danielle's arrival on the island. What's the story there?

* Karl says the Others' village is on the main island. The smaller island, where Jack is being kept is for "projects."

* What is the role of Isabelle, the enforcer who puts Juliet on trial? She answers to Ben, but what's the heirarchy among the Others? And is Ben really the head honcho?

* What does the mark branded on Juliet's back mean? How are people treated amongst the Others when they're branded this way?

* According to Ben, Ethan Rom was the Others' surgeon.

* How was Cindy the stewardess "turned" by the Others? Was she brainwashed? Or is she just convinced they're good folk even though they kidnapped her and the flight's children and killed a buncha people? I'm thinking brainwashed or "indoctrinated" in some fashion.

* Why were Cindy and the other Others watching Jack like a zoo animal? Out of curiosity or is he thought of as somehow special?

* Cindy thinks Ana Lucia is still alive.
