Coming Up: "Psurroundabout Ride" by XTC (as the Dukes of Stratosphear)

Out Oct 18. Order from Amazon now.

Details:
XTC as The Dukes - From Psychedelic Pswindon - the complete recordings in stereo and 5.1 Psurround Psound / 25 o Clock and Psonic Psunspot newly mixed in stereo by Steven Wilson, with mixes approved by Andy Partridge (CD & Blu-Ray) / Both albums + 2 extra tracks also newly mixed in 5.1 surround by Steven Wilson on Blu-Ray (with a final song up-mixed to surround using the Penteo audio system) / All 19 songs appear in their original mixes in hi-res stereo (Blu-Ray) / 18 songs appear in their new mixes in hi-res stereo (Blu-Ray)] / Complete demos from both albums & instrumental versions of album songs also feature in hi-res stereo on the Blu-Ray. Produced by John Leckie (Swami Anand Nagara) and The Dukes.
Sometimes it pays to be a studio band... Between 1980 (when they were still performing live) and 1989, XTC wrote, recorded and released a series of albums from Black Sea to Oranges & Lemons that cemented the band's reputation as songwriters and recording artists almost without parallel in the UK. They may not have sold as many as some and they tended to sell more in Japan and America than on home soil. They may not be as famous as other bands of the era but, to many of those with discerning ears, they're rated among the very best, the select few who rise above their contemporaries...
As if six stellar albums in ten years including two double LPs, in an era when the advent of digital technology and CDs left many artists struggling to issue one or two albums in the same period, wasn't enough, the band also issued two albums under completely different names as The Dukes of Stratosphear, an unashamedly psychedelic ensemble which phased and flanged in and out of existence in 1985 and 1987 respectively... (Though rumours continue to circulate of an earlier proto Merseybeat/Brit Blues incarnation of the band under yet another name..)
Psurroundabout Ride gathers all of the Dukes' material, with both albums remixed in stereo and 5.1 surround by Steven Wilson and mixes approved by Andy Partridge. No need for mushrooms, simply position yourself between 6 speakers, play the blu-ray, relax and float downstream, as the music takes you to places un-imagined, even in the original summer of love...

Coming Up: Soundtrack to Gerry Anderson's 1970s sci-fi live-actioner "UFO"

Out Sept. 13 from Silva Screen Records. Watch for pre-order info at Amazon.

Details from the label:
After a decade of creating pioneering puppet series made for children, Gerry & Sylvia Anderson took their first steps into live-action, with the 1969 feature film Doppelgänger (re-titled outside Britain as Journey To The Far Side Of The Sun).
This science-fiction film approached its outer space subject matter with a gritty realism, and would set the tone for what was to be their first live-action television series: UFO.
This new series took as a starting point the pioneering work of Dr Christiaan N. Barnard, the surgeon who performed the world’s first heart transplant operation. In UFO a dying race of aliens travel across vast distances of space to harvest organs from human beings to help ensure their own survival. To combat this threat the United Nations created SHADO, a top-secret organisation utilising the latest technology available to defend the Earth.
To complement the series, the Andersons frequent musical collaborator Barry Gray created a multifaceted score that gave the programme its own musical identity.
Elegantly crafted and a firm favourite with Barry Gray fans, the sound of UFO, particularly its ethereal “World Music” closing credits is, quite simply, a joy. Includes a bonus track, Trampoline performed by The Spencer Davis Group from the episode Ordeal.

Coming Up: "The Definitive Archies" - new vinyl best of

Out Sept. 13 from Real Gone. Order now from Amazon.

Details:

The first vinyl compilation in 30 years from everybody’s favorite back-of-the-cereal-box band! And, unlike recent (and decidedly unauthorized) reissues of The Archies’ albums, this release is not a disc dub!

Brainchild of Don Kirshner, the man behind The Monkees, The Archies, for all of their “manufactured” image, were actually the result of a remarkable collection of talent. Holding down production duties was Jeff Barry, whose songwriting collaborations with then-wife Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector had yielded such classics as “Da Doo Ron Ron” and “Be My Baby,” and whose previous production credits included The Shangri-Las (“Leader of the Pack”) and The Monkees.

Aiding Barry on the songwriting side was Barry discovery Andy Kim (“Rock Me Gently”), with whom Barry penned The Archies’ biggest hit, “Sugar, Sugar.” And at the mic was the great Ron Dante, whose first chart hit, ironically, was The Detergents’ “Leader of the Laundromat,” which was a parody version of “Leader of the Pack!” With such a surehanded production and songwriting team in tow, The Archies rattled off seven chart hits in quick succession, and you’ll find six of ‘em (featuring their other Top Ten hit, “Jingle Jangle”) here, in a 14-track compilation pressed in opaque blue vinyl limited to 1000 copies! Extensive sleeve notes by Ed Osborne accompany.

2. Feelin’ So Good (S.K.O.O.B.Y.-D.O.O.) 3. Jingle Jangle
4. Who’s Your Baby?

6. Archie’s Party
7. Truck Driver

SIDE TWO
1. Inside Out – Upside Down 2. Get on the Line
3. Melody Hill
4. Justine
5. Love Light
6. Bicycles, Roller Skates and You
7. Sugar, Sugar

Coming Up: Criterion's monster-sized Godzilla collection

Out Oct. 29. Order from Amazon now.

Details:

In 1954, an enormous beast clawed its way out of the sea, destroying everything in its path—and changing movies forever.

The arresting original Godzilla soon gave rise to an entire monster-movie genre (kaiju eiga), but the King of the Monsters continued to reign supreme: in fourteen fiercely entertaining sequels over the next two decades, Godzilla defended its throne against a host of other formidable creatures, transforming from a terrifying symbol of nuclear annihilation into a benevolent (if still belligerent) Earth protector.

Collected here for the first time are all fifteen Godzilla films of Japan’s Showa era, in a landmark set showcasing the technical wizardry, fantastical storytelling, and indomitable international appeal that established the most iconic giant monster the cinema has ever seen.

Coming Up: Horn Rock & Funky Guitar Grooves 1968-1974

Out Aug. 2 from Ace Records. Order now from Amazon for $12.89.

Details:

American rock gets back to its soulful roots. Available on CD and double LP.
1968 was the year when rock music went back to its roots. Many cite Dylan and the Band and their search for a mythical America, but for others it was a return to the jazz, soul and R&B they had grown up with and had first got them into music. “Horn Rock & Funky Guitar Grooves” explores these escapes from psychedelia in a 17-track compilation that stretches geographically from New Jersey to San Francisco, and on down to Memphis and New Orleans as rock once again became danceable.

The term horn rock traditionally refers to the jazz style of big band-arranged rock associated with bands such as Blood, Sweat & Tears (who are featured with ‘Roller Coaster’) and Chicago: music which showed the influence of jazz on the post-war children who became rock stars in the 1960s. It’s clearly there with Al Kooper’s take on Hayes & Porter’s ‘Toe Hold’, San Francisco’s the Sons with their De La Soul-sampled ‘Boomp, Boomp, Chomp’, Chase’s frenetic ‘Run Back To Mama’, Lighthouse’s floor-filler ‘One Fine Morning’ and Donnie Brooks’ previously unreleased ‘Blow Your Mind’.

Others looked to the touring R&B bands for their influence. This was most obvious in Delaney & Bonnie’s Memphis-recorded ‘It’s Been A Long Time Coming’, and the bands that emerged from Bill Graham’s San Francisco label: Cold Blood, Tower Of Power and Hammer. The last of those replaced the horns with guitars and organ, as did the East Coast’s Crystal Mansion. The Paul Butterfield Blues Band and alumnus Mike Bloomfield in the Electric Flag embraced horns after starting out as pioneers of electric guitar.

“Horn Rock & Funky Guitar Grooves” embraces an era and a sound that is often overlooked for self-consciously heavier and hipper sounds. These records are today sampled for their good grooves, and championed by DJs of retro sounds for their dancefloor adaptability.

Coming Up: Come On Let's Go! Power Pop Gems From The 70s & 80s

Out Aug. 2 from Ace Records. Order from Amazon now for $12.89.

Details:

Nothing shakes some action like a snappy guitar-based pop song delivered with a powerful beat, boundless energy and joyous enthusiasm.

“Power pop is what we play,” declared Pete Townshend in a 1967 interview to promote the Who’s ‘Pictures Of Lily’. Although the term power pop did not gain much traction at the time, it re-emerged at the beginning of the 70s after the Beatles had dissolved and music began to fracture into various camps.

In the USA, bands that remained true to the Beatles tradition began to be referred to as power pop. The Raspberries set the ball rolling in 1972, and young bands began to spring up who really only wanted to sing about girls and having a good time on Saturday night. As the 70s wore on, the new wave had an ever-growing influence on the movement, and even the Ramones donned skinny ties long enough to back up harmony pop masters the Paley Brothers on a thrilling update of Ritchie Valens’ ‘Come On Let’s Go’.

The power pop movement never really caught on in the UK, principally because the highly influential mainstream music press were first centred on progressive rock, and then completely consumed by the arrival of punk. Even the mighty Raspberries failed to crack the UK Top 50, while Cheap Trick scored one lowly entry and only the Knack managed to hit the Top 10. US fans were fortunate in having publications such as Creem, Trouser Press and Who Put The Bomp staffed by maverick writers with diverse voices. Greg and Suzy Shaw were especially supportive of groups such as the Flamin’ Groovies, Rubinoos and Dwight Twilley Band, not only with their magazine but, once their Bomp! record label was formed, by putting out singles by the Romantics, Shoes, 20/20, Gary Charlson and others.

Pure pop bliss is provided by the Toms on their richly melodic ‘Better Than Anyone Else’, while the Dwight Twilley Band go ‘Looking For The Magic’ with breathless energy and insistent determination. The Romantics kick up a storm on ‘What I Like About You’ – its hectic rhythm guitar, squealing harmonica, and raw Beatles-like vitality making it an absolute killer. Staten Island’s Dirty Looks deliver their paean to rock’n’roll, ‘Let Go’, with the same energy and drive that any punk band would have been proud to muster, while the Tweeds nail our musical addiction in one with ‘I Need That Record’. Also included is the Flamin’ Groovies’ original US version of ‘Shake Some Action’, which Cyril Jordan claims is their best ever recording and we are not arguing.

“Come On Let’s Go!” presents us with a smorgasbord of power pop classics, obscurities and left-field gems – collective proof that nothing shakes some action like a snappy guitar-based pop song delivered with a powerful beat, boundless energy and joyous enthusiasm.

Tracks:

1. Come on Let's Go - the Paley Brothers & the Ramones

  2. I Wanna Be with You - Raspberries
  3. What I Like About You - the Romantics
  4. Let Go - Dirty Looks

Coming Up: "American Comic Book Chronicles: 1940-44"

Out July 2. Order now from Amazon.

Details:

The American Comic Book Chronicles continues its ambitious series of FULL-COLOR HARDCOVERS, where TwoMorrows' top authors document every decade of comic book history from the 1940s to today!

Kurt Mitchell and editor Roy Thomas composed this volume about the “Golden Age” of the comic book industry, a five-year period that presented the earliest adventures of such iconic super-heroes as Batman, Captain Marvel, Superman, and Wonder Woman.

It was a time when America’s entry into World War II was presaged by the arrival of such patriotic do-gooders as Will Eisner’s Uncle Sam, Harry Shorten and Irv Novick’s The Shield, and Joe Simon and Jack Kirby’s Captain America.

It was when teenage culture found expression in a fumbling red-haired high school student named Archie Andrews. But most of all, the first five years of the 1940s was the age of the “packagers” when studios headed by men like Harry A Chesler, Will Eisner, and Jerry Iger churned out material for a plethora of new comic book companies that published the entire gamut of genres, from funny animal stories to crime tales to jungle sagas to science-fiction adventures.

These are just a few of the events chronicled in this exhaustive, full-color hardcover. Taken together, American Comic Book Chronicles forms a cohesive, linear overview of the entire landscape of comics history, sure to be an invaluable resource for ANY comic book enthusiast!

Coming up: "Mac Raboy: Master of the Comics"

Pre-order from Amazon now.

Details:

Beginning with his WPA etchings during the 1930s, Mac Raboy struggled to survive the Great Depression and eventually found his way into the comic book sweatshops of America. In that world of four-color panels, he perfected his art style on such creations as Dr. Voodoo, Zoro, The Mystery Man, Bulletman, Spy Smasher, Green Lama and his crowning achievement, Captain Marvel Jr. Raboy went on to illustrate the Flash Gordon Sunday newspaper strip, and left behind a legacy of meticulous perfection. Through extensive research and interviews with son David Raboy, and assistants who worked with the artist during the Golden Age of Comics, author Roger Hill brings Mac Raboy, the man and the artist, into focus for historians to savor and enjoy. This full-color hardcover includes never-before-seen photos, a wealth of rare and unpublished artwork, and the first definitive biography of a true Master of the Comics!
