Lost clues: Meet Kevin Johnson ep. 8, season 4

Episode summary:

Sayid and Desmond confront "Kevin Johnson," who is really their fellow crash survivor Michael, demanding to know how he came to be on the freighter. Through a series of flashbacks, we learn the story.

Although he and Walt did make it back from the island thanks to Ben, Michael is haunted, literally, by the deaths of Ana Lucia and Libby, who he killed when freeing Ben from the Hatch. He has visions of Libby a couple of times. Walt, apparently, won't talk to him because he knows what Michael has done.

After pawning the watch Jin gave him in exchange for a handgun, Michael creeps into a New York alley to shoot himself, but is stopped by, of all people!, Mr. Friendly/Tom from the island. Turns out Tom is one of those Others who comes and goes from the island (and lives well, staying in penthouse suites, when he does so), and he has a job for Michael to do. Michael must go undercover and kill those aboard Widmore's freighter before it can reach the island. Doing so will save everyone on the island.

Tom also claims Widmore is behind the staged Oceanic wreckage, having dug up 324 bodies from a mass grave in Thailand, buying a junked plane and sinking it in the ocean in order to cover up the location of the island, which he's somehow found and wants.

But once he's aboard the freighter, Michael gets a message from Ben, who tells him it's too early to do the deed. Ben wants a list of everyone on the ship, because some are innocent and can't be killed (there we go with these mysterious lists again). So Michael evidently goes about making his list. He's also the guy behind the destruction of the ships radio room and the disabling of its engines.

When Sayid hears all this, he grabs Michael and brings him to the freighter captain, outing Michael as a spy for Ben--after all, the Captain has given Sayid and Desmond the impression that it was Ben who staged the fake wreck, and they think Widmore is their key to rescue.

Meanwhile, back in Locke-town, Ben spills the beans to everyone about Michael being his spy and makes it clear to them that Widmore's people are there to seize the island and kill everyone on it. He also secretly urges Alex and Karl to go with Danielle to an area of the island called "the sanctuary." That's where the Others have vanished to, and it'll be a safe place when Widmore's people reach the island.

But as those three make their way to the sanctuary, both Karl and Danielle are suddenly shot and killed. Alex, fearing she's next raises her hands and calls out that she is Ben's daughter.

Questions/clues/observations:

* Who fired the shots that killed Karl and Danielle? Most likely it was the mercenary types shown doing target practice office on the freighter. Remember, we saw Frank leaving in the helicopter on a "mission" of some sort. I think he brought the mercenaries to the island and they've begun their attack.

Photobucket

* What will happen to Michael, now that he's been outed as a spy?

Photobucket

* Miles has some pretty cool psychic powers. He knew that "Kevin" wasn't Michael's real name. But did he realize Michael that was a spy? If so, he kept it to himself. Maybe this was part of his con on Ben--he wants to get $3 million bucks out of him in exchange for saving him from Widmore.

* Frank tells Michael that he's aboard the freighter because he knows that the Oceanic wreckage shown on television isn't the real thing and Widmore evidently agrees. Does he really believe he's on a rescue mission?

* Libby, in Michael's first vision of her, is bringing him blankets. When he shot Libby in the Hatch, she was getting blankets.

Photobucket

* What's the story on the temple? Why is it a safe spot? What are the Others doing there?

Photobucket

* The tune on Michael's car radio when he tries to kill himself the first time is "It's Getting Better" by Mama Cass. In season 2, Desmond's listens to Cass' "Make Your Own Kind of Music" in the Hatch.

* Here's a translation of the inscription on the back of Jin's watch.

Lost clues: "Ji Yeon" Ep. 7, Season 4

Episode summary:

In flash forwards, Sun goes into labor. She's in Korea and she's recognized in the hospital as one of the "Oceanic 6."

Back in island time, we see Sun getting suspicious about the newcomers Daniel and Charlotte and of Juliet. She thinks Jack can't be trusted either. Worried that the freighter isn't there to rescue the survivors, she decides she and her baby would be better off in Locke's camp and she convinces Jin to go with her.

Juliet is emphatic, though, that unless Sun gets off the island, she will die--as have all women who have gotten pregnant there. To stop her from going, Juliet reveals to Jin that Sun has had an affair. Jin, saddened and angry, turns back and the couple ends up staying on the beach.

Photobucket

Eventually, Jin finds it in his heart to forgive Sun--back in civilization he was a cold and troubled man, he really can't blame her. They reconcile, and they decide to stay on the beach in hopes of rescue.

In other "out-of-time" scenes, we see Jin scurrying around Seoul trying to buy a giant stuffed panda bear because a baby is on the way. We're led to believe the baby is his and Jin's, but it turns out these scenes are flashbacks, which take place before the crash. The panda is for a Chinese ambassador Sun's father Mr. Paik, who Jin works for, hopes to impress.

In the flashforwards, Sun has her baby and afterwards, when she is at home, we see Hurley arrive at her apartment to see the new arrival, a girl name Ji Yeon as Jin had wished back on the island. But Jin isn't there. We're led to believe he's dead, as Hurley and Sun go to a cemetery and stand before a tombstone bearing his name.

Sun, holding her new baby, looks at the stone and says "I miss you so much..."

Meanwhile, on the freighter, Sayid and Desmond meet the ship's captain, who says he's working for Charles Widmore. The Captain shows them a flight date recorder--the "black box" from Oceanic 815 and reveals that a fake crash, complete with 300-plus dead passengers and crew--was staged. The Captain talks about the tremendous resources necessary to pull off a hoax and adds, "and that's why it's so important that Ben Linus dies."

But the Cap's phrasing is nebulous. Does he mean Widmore staged the crash and is so powerful that everybody better do what he wants, or does he mean that Ben staged the crash?

Photobucket

Afterwards, as the ship's doctor brings Sayid and Desmond to their new quarters below decks, they encounter the ship's janitor who turns out to be--you guessed it!--Michael.

Sayid and Desmond pretend they don't know him, as this is obviously Ben's shipboard spy.

Questions/clues/observations:

* Is Jin really dead or is he still alive, but on the island? I kinda think he's still alive.

* The date of death on Jin's tombstone is 9/22/2004, the same date as the Oceanic crash. So, the Oceanic 6 is covering up whatever really happened to him.

* Why is Michael working for Ben and to what end? And where's Walt?

Photobucket

* Are we to believe Widmore or Ben staged the Oceanic crash? I think it was Widmore. Naomi and her crew knew there were crash survivors so, by extension, must Widmore. He wants the island and staged the crash so it wouldn't be discovered.

* Sayid and Desmond were slipped a note, presumably from Michael, telling them not to trust the captain. Should they or shouldn't they?

Photobucket

* The captain's last name is Gault. According to Wikipedia:

Captain Gault is a fictional sea captain created by English writer William Hope Hodgson. Many of the Captain Gault stories were collected in the book Captain Gault, Being the Exceedingly Private Log of a Sea-Captain, published in 1917.

Captain Gault seems to be a captain for hire, and operates a different ship in each of the stories. Some take place in England, some in the United States, some in Havanna, and some in Europe. Gault himself is a morally ambiguous character who follows the pattern of many famous fictional criminals: although a law-breaker (he seems primarily interested in making money), he proves also to have a strict moral code. As the series progresses, we learn tantalizing bits of information about Captain Gault: he seems to be highly placed in a secret society; he has occult knowledge about arcane religious artifacts; he seems to be very knowledgeable about gemstones; he is a skilled amateur painter. In general, he reveals himself to have surprising resevoirs of specialized knowledge. Where he got all this knowledge is generally not revealed; we get only these tantalizing hints at the character's past.

* Before Hurley arrives at her apartment, Sun has her television on. The channel is running the late Nikki's appearance on "Expose."

Photobucket

* The woman guarding Desmond and Sayid is shown reading (or trying to read as she's gone loopy from "cabin fever," i.e. time displacement, and is holding it upside down) is "The Survivors of the Chancellor" by Jules Verne. Wikipedia says:

...an 1875 novel about the final voyage of a British sailing vessel, the Chancellor, told from the perspective of one of its passengers (in the form of a diary).

Photobucket

Verne's novels have been a huge influence on the show, particularly "The Mysterious Island."

* So the Oceanic 6 is Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sayid, Sun and...? Are we counting Aaron? Is number 6 whoever we saw in the coffin at the end of season 3?

* What mission did Frank leave on in the helicopter?

Lost clues: "The Other Woman" Ep. 6, Season 4

Episode summary:

Jack gets suspicious when newcomers Charlotte and Daniel vanish into the jungle. As he and Juliet search for them, Juliet--briefly separated from Jack--encounters Harper, one of the Others.

In flashbacks, we learn that Harper is the Others' shrink and see her counseling Juliet when she is new on the island. We eventually learn that Harper is Goodwin's wife, and becomes angry as Juliet and Goodwin begin having an affair. Ben also isn't happy about it. He has his eye on Juliet. We learn that Ben sent Goodwin to infiltrate Ana Lucia's group of crash survivors in hopes that Goodwin would get himself killed, which he did. Juliet is shattered when she learns what has happened and is fearful of Ben.

Back in the present (or whatever), Harper tells Juliet that Charlotte and Daniel are heading to the Tempest. We learn that this is a Dharma station housing deadly chemicals--the same chemicals Ben used years ago to wipe out all the Dharma settlers. Harper says that Charlotte and Daniel plan to release the chemicals and kill everyone on the island, and that Juliet must stop them.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the jungle, Kate--on her way back to the beach after leaving Locke's group--encounters Charlotte and Daniel. They're evasive about what they're up to and Kate is suspicious. She asks to look inside a large bag Daniel is carrying and sees that it contains gas masks. At the same time, Charlotte hits Kate on the head with a gun and knocks her unconscious.

Jack and Juliet find Kate a short while later and, while Jack attends to Kate, Juliet dashes off to the Tempest station to stop Charlotte and Daniel from completing their mission.

At the Tempest, Juliet finds Daniel typing furiously at a computer keyboard. He tells Juliet he's not trying to kill everyone, he's trying to save them. He's trying to make the gas inert so Ben can't use it again. Charlotte then creeps up behind Juliet and the two women get into a scuffle while Daniel types away. It turns out Daniel was telling the truth, he makes the gas harmless.

Right about then, Jack and Kate show up and get clued in as to what's happening.

Meanwhile, back in Otherville, Ben persuades Locke to let him out of his cell. He promises to reveal who sent Daniel, Charlotte and the rest from the freighter. In the living room of his house, Ben opens a hidden safe and pulls out a videotape which shows Charles Widmore, Penelope's dad, beating someone senseless. The person being beaten is one of Ben's people and Widmore has somehow found out about the island and wants to take control of it.

Now having a common enemy, Locke releases Ben, letting him live among the rest of those who have settled in the Others' homes.

Questions/clues/observations:

* When Locke asks Ben to identify the spy on the freighter, Ben says "ok, but you better sit down." We don't learn who spy is, but all the speculation that it's Michael seems pretty well reasoned.

* Was Harper real or a vision/ghost? She appeared and vanished mighty fast. And how did Ben get her to deliver a message to Juliet?

* There was mysterious whispering when Harper showed up in front of Juliet. Does this whispering signal the arrival of ghosts? Last season, Ben heard weird whispering right before his dead mom showed up.

* Did Widmore find out about the island via the Black Rock journal he bought in that auction? What, exactly, are his plans?

* What was the original purpose of the Tempest? What were the Dharma's studying there?

* Harper says Ben likes Juliet because she looks just like "her"? Who does Juliet look like? Ben's mom? A former wife of Ben's who died in childbirth?

* We get a brief look at Sawyer and Hurley playing horseshoes and Hurley's winning big time. Sawyer asks how he got so good and Hurley says "I guess I'm just lucky." But we know he's been anything but in the past. Did the island "cure" his bad luck?

* Ben and Juliet have an interesting exchange about the children the Others abducted from Ana Lucia's group:

B: "I want to thank you for how wonderful you've been with Zack and Emma."

J: "They're really sweet kids. Ben, They've been asking me about their mother in Los Angeles. I'm not really sure what to say."

B: "They'll stop asking in time."

J: "They're children...do they really belong here?"

B: "They're on the list Juliet. Who are we to question whose is on the list on whose not"

Again, we ask, what's the deal with these lists?

Matthew Fox knows how "Lost" ends

But is he telling? Of course not! Scotland's Daily Record tries to badger it out of him:

Matthew reckons that keeping mum has made him a better actor - at least off-screen.

He was told about the shock ending of the last series of Lost - which revealed that Dr Jack Shephard got off the island and became depressed and lonely - almost a year before the rest of the cast.

"It was important so I could play my character properly," said Matthew, who managed to keep his lips locked despite some inquisitive co-stars.

And he reckons it was the best acting he's ever done, especially when co-star Elizabeth Mitchell, who plays Juliet, got a little suspicious.

"We were in a van together driving to a location and she was asking all these questions," he said.

"She sensed something was up. I wanted to tell her so bad. But I couldn't." So far in the show's three series, six of the main cast have been killed off, including Dominic Monaghan, who played rock star Charlie and was supposed to be one of the leads.

Lost: What we STILL don't know

Lost clues: "The Constant" Ep. 4, Season 4

Episode summary:

In the chopper on the way the freighter with Frank and Sayid, Desmond experiences some time frame difficulties. He keeps flashing back and forward in consciousness between his 1997 British military self and the present time.

Desmond doesn't remember that he was on the island, or Sayid or anything that happened post '97. He's freaking out.

Once on the ship, he's shut in the sick bay with another man, communications officer George Minkowski who we've heard a few times talking to Naomi over the satellite phone. Minkowski is having the same problem, he keeps flashing back into the past.

Sayid, baffled as to what's going on, manages to trade his gun with Frank (who seems to want to help the crash survivors) in exchange for a satellite phone, which Sayid uses to call Jack on the island.

Once Daniel Faraday hears about how Desmond is freaking out, he gets on the phone to talk to Desmond. Faraday somehow understands what's going on with Desmond. He asks Jack if Desmond has recently been exposed to radiation or a large amount electromagnetic energy (which Desmond was--in the Hatch implosion that resulted in Desmond's seeing-into-the-future abilities).

Faraday asks Desmond where, in time, he is. He tells Desmond that when he flashes back into 1997, he needs to hop on a train and travel to Oxford University to find the 1997 version of Faraday (at this point, my brain started to hurt).

The present-day Faraday gives Desmond some coordinates for a machine to remember, along with the phrase "I know about Eloise." (Eloise turns out to be the '97 Faraday's lab rat, which he's been using for time travel experiments).

Back in 1997, Desmond follows these instructions and the '97 Faraday realizes Desmond is flashing back from the future and attempts to help him. He tells Desmond that he needs to focus on a "constant" in order for his consciousness to find its way into the present time. This constant needs to be something, or someone, that's consistent in both time frames.

Desmond, of course, knows that this constant is his girlfriend Penelope, who happens to be quite mad at him back in 1997. Still, he manages to track her down in that time frame and gets a phone number out of her. He tells her he will call this number in several years. She thinks he's nuts.

Back on the ship, the crew has taken away the satellite phone but Sayid, Minkowski and Desmond manage to sneak up to the radio room (which has been mysteriously vandalized. Nobody on the crew seems to know who's responsible. Ben's "spy"?).

Sayid cobbles together a phone of some sort, powered by a battery and, lo' and behold, Desmond phones the present-time Penelope and everything falls back together. He remembers Sayid, the island, everything that's happened.

The phone conversation is short, but Penelope manages to tell Desmond she loves and has forgiven him, and that she knows about the island, she's been researching it.

Before Desmond makes the call, however, Minkowski dies. His brain is fried by all his shifting backwards and forwards through time. The same thing would've happened to Desmond if Penelope hadn't been his constant.

Back on the island, we see Faraday leafing through his journal. He's written a note to himself. If there's trouble, Desmond will be his "constant."

Questions/clues/observations:

* Someone unlocked the sickbay door so Sayid, Minkowski and Desmond could get up to the radio room. Who was it? Frank? Ben's spy?

* Is Ben's spy someone we know? Namely Michael?

* Back in 1997 searching for Penny, Desmond tracks down her dad Charles Widmore at an auction, in which Widmore has just made a successful bid for a journal belonging to the first mate of the Black Rock--the old slaving ship that's on the island but, as far as the rest of the world knows, was lost at sea. What is Widmore's connection to the Black Rock and the island?

* The auctioneer makes reference to the journal having been previously owned by Tovard Hanso. Alvar Hanso was the founder/funder of the Dharma Initiative. Is Widmore involved in Dharma? It's enemy?

* Does the Black Rock journal contain information about the island?

* Faraday has seemed pretty addled from the get-go. Now it seems as if his sketchiness must be the result of time travel. That and being a physicist. They're all a little nutty. But still... what's he been through? The flashback we saw of him seeing news coverage of the Oceanic crash made it appear he was in bad psychological shape in the past. He'd experienced a breakdown or something and was weeping uncontrollably when he saw the news report, but didn't seem to understand why. It seems he's caught between time lines, much like Desmond was.

* Was the "sickness" that killed off Danielle's people related to this brain-frying time frame confusion?

* In island time, those on the helicopter haven't been heard from in over a day, but the chopper trip to the ship didn't take very long at all. What's the deal with this crazy island time anomaly stuff?

Miles says he'll tell Kate everything he knows about her, if she brings him to Ben. Kate manages to do this by enlisting Sawyer to distract Locke.

When Miles and Ben get face to face, Miles says "you know who I am, you know who I work for," and Ben says yes. Miles says he could help Ben by telling this mysterious person that Ben is dead but to do so, Ben must pay Miles $3.2 million.

Ben seems annoyed at Miles' crass maneuver and doesn't agree to anything. Kate is annoyed too, and yanks Miles out of Ben's cell, at which point Miles tells her that the outside world knows all about Kate's crimes and that, if he were her, he'd stay on the island.

In flash forward, we see Kate didn't follow that advice. She's in court, facing charges for murder, obstruction of justice and many more charges. But she's also a celebrity, one of the Oceanic 6. The jury is impressed when Jack testifies on her behalf. He tells a false story about the plane crashing into the sea and Kate helping to rescue him and other survivors.

Kate's mother also is moved by this, and the fact that she evidently has a grandson. She decides to to participate with the prosecution and the state, having lost their key witness, cops a deal. Kate stays free, but she must remain in California on probation for 10 years. Kate readily agrees with this.

After she's freed, Kate and Jack meet in the courthouse parking garage. He makes it clear that he wants to be with her, but when Kate invites him to her home, he defers. He doesn't want to see her son. Kate says she knows this is hard on Jack, but until he can make peace with it, they can't be together.

We then see Kate arriving home. She goes upstairs to see her son, who looks to be at least 2 or 3 years old. It's not really her son, although he calls her "mom." It's Claire's baby, now older, Aaron.

Back in island time: Jack forces Charlotte to call the freighter. Although the helicopter carrying Sayid, Desmond and Frank left the island hours ago, it hasn't turned up on the ship. What happened to it?

Also, Locke is angry about being fooled by Kate. He tells her she needs to leave the next morning, which she does, much to Sawyer's consternation. Locke also pays a visit to the capture Miles, sticking a live grenade in his mouth and telling him to keep his mouth shut.

Questions/clues/observations:

* What led to Kate's caring for Aaron? Is Claire dead? Why is Jack struggling with this? Does he know Claire is/was his half-sister? Is he somehow responsible for her death or absence?

* In court, Jack says only eight people made out of the plane. Two of them "died." This is the official cover story, anyhow. So the Oceanic 6 is: Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sayid and who else? Presumably, we're not counting Aaron, as he wasn't born yet and not a passenger on the plane. So far as the rest of the world knows, Aaron is Kate's real son, born after the crash. Are we counting Michael and Walt? How about Desmond? He was on the chopper with Sayid.

* According to the cover story, who is Aaron's father?

* The book Locke brings Ben to read is "VALIS" by cult sci-fi author Philip K. Dick. I read this years ago, but don't remember a thing about it, only that it was a tad hard to get a grip on. Wikipedia says:

VALIS is a 1981 science fiction novel by Philip K. Dick. The title is an acronym for Vast Active Living Intelligence System, Dick's gnostic vision of one aspect of God.

VALIS is the first book in the VALIS trilogy of novels including The Divine Invasion (1981), and the unfinished The Owl in Daylight. The Transmigration of Timothy Archer (1982) is thematically related to the unfinished trilogy and was included in several omnibus editions of the trilogy as a stand-in for the unwritten final volume. Together with his thematically related final novel, VALIS represents Dick's last major work before he died. Radio Free Albemuth is considered an earlier version of VALIS, and is not included as a component of the VALIS trilogy.

* According to some fans, the book Sawyer is reading (I couldn't see the title, maybe other fans recognized the book's cover design) is "The Invention of Morel," a sci-fi novel that according to Wikipedia:

...shares some elements with the 1934 novel XYZ by Clemente Palma and with the better known The Island of Doctor Moreau, being the later the most influential of the two (see "Characters" below.) In the same way, other works of fiction share some elements with this novel rather than with the novels that influenced it. For example, fans of the video game Myst believe this novel is one of its sources of inspiration, while the plot of the episode "Dave" from the television program Lost mirrors one of fugitive's theories--that he is on a psychiatric hospital dreaming he is on an island.

* Hurley puts the 1980 Olivia Newton John movie "Xanadu" in the VCR. The theme song--an annoyingly catchy disco-ish effort by John and ELO--has lyrics that possibly could be used to comment on the island and/or Sayer and Kate's relationship:

A place where nobody dared to go
The love that we came to know
They call it Xanadu

And now
Open your eyes and see
What we have made is real
We are in Xanadu

A million lights are dancing
And there you are
A shooting star
An everlasting world
And you're here with me
Eternally

* Xanadu is also of course, as Wikipedia puts it "a metaphor for opulence," the inspiration for Samuel Taylor Coleridge's most famous poem and the name of Charles Foster Kane's estate in "Citizen Kane."

* Does the weird time anomaly account for the helicopter not turning up on the freighter yet?

* How does Ben have access to millions of dollars? And how does Miles know he does?

* Sawyer plays backgammon with Locke. In season one, Locke taught Walt how to play the game.

* What's up with Charlotte testing Daniel's memory with cards? Or is it really his memory that's being tested? Maybe she's trying to see if he can predict which cards she picked. Is she testing whether the island has affected/enhanced his mental abilities in some way?

* How long is Locke gonna leave that grenade in Miles' mouth?

Lost clues: "The Economist" Ep. 3, Season 4

Episode summary:

In flash forward, we see Sayid on a gorgeous, seaside golf course. He meets a fellow golfer, who says Sayid looks familiar to him. Sayid says this is because he's one of the Oceanic 6--his picture has been spread across the media. The other golfer seems very upset by this and doesn't want to continue golfing. As the golfer leaves, Sayid calls him "Mr. Avellino." Avellino turns back around and Sayid shoots him dead.

Later we see Sayid in Berlin meeting up--seemingly by chance--with a woman who is an assistant to an esteemed economist. They strike up a romance, but it becomes clear that Sayid is trying to get to the economist and kill him. The woman, Elsa, shoots him. She apparently knows what Sayid is up to, too. But Sayid shoots back, killing her.

Wounded in the shoulder, Sayid goes to what looks like an animal hospital/shelter or laboratory that's closed for the night. Someone, we don't see his face, stitches Sayid up--chastising him for thinking with his heart, not his head. We see that this person is Ben. He's given Sayid a list of people to kill. Killing these people will help Sayid's friends, Ben says.

Back in island time, the helicopter crew agrees to bring the survivors off the island if they retrieve Charlotte from Locke. Sayid, Kate and Miles go to the Others' barracks to do this, but are captured by Locke and his crew. Sayid strikes a bargain, though, he gives Locke Miles and brings Charlotte back to the helicopter.

Frank, the helicopter pilot, reluctantly agrees to bring a couple of the survivors with him to the waiting freighter--there's little fuel left in the chopper and he can only take a light load. Sayid and Desmond go along.

Questions/clues/observations:

* Why has Sayid become an assassin for Ben? Who are the people Ben is after? Are they associated with Matthew Abbaddon and/or the Dharma Initiative?

* Back on the island, Sayid finds a secret room in Ben's home. It's full of clothing. In the the desk, there's a drawerful of currency from different countries and fake passports, each bearing Ben's photograph. Looks like Mr. Born on the Island is a traveling man. Is he some sort of spy? What's he up to?

* On the island, Daniel the physicist asks the freighter crew to shoot over a rocket payload to the island. It launches but doesn't land until 31 minutes later. There's some freaky time anomaly between the island and the rest of the world.

* The bracelet Sayid spots on Naomi's wrist looks the same as the one Elsa is wearing. It seems this means they work for the same organization. When Sayid first sees the bracelet, it seems like he recognizes it somehow.

* Naomi's bracelet reads: "N. I'll always be with you. R.G." Who is R.G.? Could the R stand for "Richard," Ben's Other pal?

* Ben and Sayid refer to a list--presumably a "to kill" list. What's up with Ben and his lists? Back on the island, the Others have a list of "good" people among the survivors that, apparently, Jacob provided.

* Sayid is one of the Oceanic 6. So we've got him, Hurley, Jack and Kate (although, I'm still not convinced she's officially among them, being a fugitive. Wouldn't she be in jail if the world knew she was back?). Who are the rest?

* Locke goes to where he thinks he'll find Jacob's cabin, but it's not there? Earlier, when Hurley saw it, the cabin seems to be moving around, appearing in several different spots and disappearing. What explains this?

* Does the island move around in time and dimension just like Jacob's cabin?

* Confronted by Desmond, Frank reveals he isn't working for Penelope. He doesn't even know her. Frank, Miles and the rest seems to be in the dark about a lot of the details of what's going on. They just know they're on the island to get Ben.

Lost: What we STILL don't know

This season of Lost to have 13 eps instead of 16

The recent writers strike has had probably a bigger impact on "Lost" than on most other TV dramas, given the fourth season's late start.

Only eight episodes were scripted before the strike. And, now that the strike looks as if it's resolved, there won't be enough time for cast and crew to do the expected eight more. Instead of 16 episodes this season,it looks as if the show will have no more than 13.

More details in this Hollywood Reporter interview with "Lost" producer Carlton Cruse.

Cuse said he's happy with the outcome of the strike and can't wait to go back to his day job on "Lost."

"We're going to have to hit the ground running, go from zero to 100 mph in a matter of days to make as many episodes as possible," he said.

The goal for Cuse and co-showrunner Damon Lindelof is to produce five more episodes this season, a tall order given the time constraints and the scope of storytelling and production on "Lost." Even with five additional hours, Cuse and Lindelof will be three episodes short of the premapped fourth season.

"We will have to condense some stories," Cuse said.
